Fangraphs Breaks Down Drabek's First Start
Pull quote:
"We talked about the fastball and curveball above, but it looked like his best weapon from this weekend was a cut-fastball. A few scouting types- including Ben Badler of Baseball America- talked about the cutter’s effectiveness throughout the afternoon. The pitch had enough movement to be mistakenly classified as a curveball according to Brooksbaseball.net’s pitch f/x data. Even Denard Span noted how ridiculous the pitch was after the game, adding the Twins were lucky they did not get no-hit for the entire game."

No arguments here
What made the game for me was Kyle didn’t throw many of his amazing curves. I saw maybe 4-5 (assuming they weren’t cutters.) I saw mostly fastball, sinker, cutter, and change.
And yeah, he did look a lot like Roy (even the result.)

a little inefficient with his pitches
don’t get me wrong, he was absolutely awesome, but if he can throw fewer balls (swinging strikes aren’t a problem for him) he’ll be even better
You're right.
It’s something he’ll learn (like Roy did) as he gains more experience. Roy certainly wasn’t the most efficient guy in 2003 when he won the Cy (he pushed hard for the K.)
Roy was definitely a different pitcher by 2005 when he started to get a lot of 1 and 2 pitch outs.

for sure
and I think given Drabek’s groundball pedigree, I’m confident it will come with time – pitching next to Romero, one of the games premier groundball-getters, can’t help either. I’ll admit I’m slightly more bullish on Drabek than I was in the off-season, and he’s just 23…
Reading about how the cutter was mistaken for a curve by PitchFX due to movement makes me giddy
I think you'll find I'm universally recognised as a mature and responsible adult.

conversely
did anyone notice that Gameday thought (I didn’t catch the beginning of the game on TV) a ton of Jo-Jo’s pitches were 4-seam fastballs? I say that only because I think I read somewhere that he said he was throwing more cutters and 2-seamers… which worries me if they don’t ‘cut’ like they should…
