John Lackey rips John McDonald's performance...instead of, you know, blaming himself?
Thank you age of social media and the internet!
If you needed another reason to dislike John Lackey, you know aside from the fact that he:
- Signed for big money with Boston instead of staying with the Angels
- Is killing your fantasy stats two years running
- or like me, after having met this douche personally,
...then here's one more. Apparently he believes that our very beloved John McDonald is not good enough to hit John Lackey's elusive pitches. Bollocks! For those who have not seen the clip, it's on sportsnet.ca currently and a direct video link is located here:
Scumbag John Lackey is an appropriate meme if you want to go about creating one. Go Jays Go! The Jays are 3-3 against Boston now (3-0 if you forget about that horrible weekend in April) :).

I kind of like him for signing for big bucks with the Red Sox
then, you know, being pretty awful. I wish more players would do this.

Mouth Breather
Watching that video and listening to that tool breath through his mouth is just gross.
"Io voglio vandeeeeettaaaa!!!!!"
However, and believe me, I’m absolutely no fan of Lackey and feel his comment about John McDonald was a symptom of the classless entitled attitude that Boston and NY players tend to carry into Toronto. But the guy’s wife has cancer, he went from a top 20 starter to an overpaid liability in one of the biggest, most intrusive baseball fanbases in the game, and then he gets shelled by a guy with 20 career homeruns. I can at least accept it’s likely more frustration with himself than an actual slur on Johnny Mac.
When the guy is healthy, secure and arrogent, I’m more than happy to watch him get shelled, because he comes off as a mouth-breather in everything that I’ve read. I’m still happy to watch him get shelled now, but I don’t take any joy in the fact that from his perspective, his whole life is going up in flames around him.

agreed, and I don't wish any ill will toward him
but if he’s stressed out, he’s not doing himself any favors by acting so douchy. He’d be better off saying no comment than to cut down those around him. For that, I find it difficult to feel sorry for him.
I don’t feel sorry for him, but I don’t feel any satisfaction out of a Red Sox player being even more intolerable than usual because of the details around his situation. I’m much happier when I can attribute their failings as people along team lines (Jays! Classy! Bosox! Douchebags!) without having to empathize with them. In Lackey’s case, sadly, I get it enough that ceases to be fun.
also to be fair
“Signed for big money with Boston instead of staying with the Angels” is not an appropriate reason to hate someone. wanting more money over less money? would people hate you if you left your job for more pay? (not supposed to be accusatory, just an example)
I think it’s a fair complaint if you’re an Angels fan, but that’s because there’s an emotional connection there. I often wonder how much players consider the market they’re going into, or do they just consider the money, the structure of the contract, and the team itself? I know if I was a lefty starter posting great numbers in the NL Central, the last thing I’d want to do is go into New York or Boston.
oh it's reason to dislike a player, sure
but to “hate” them, especially one who never even played for your favourite team?
I find actual ‘hate’ for any player difficult to understand. There’s players who’s performance I’ve hated, and who’s actions I’ve depised, and I have tossed around lines like ‘man, I just hate A-Rod’, but that’s not real hate. But I think real hate is a personal thing, and since we really don’t know much about the players off the field, claiming to hate any of them to me smacks of an obsessive and unhealthy fanatism about the game.
I think Joanna had a good observation, going into the SOSH site. Even before the game, people were writing some just viralently obscene anti-Lackey screeds, and most of the attacks were personal.
Hating Lackey is excessive
But despising the members of SOSH for obscene, bigoted, ignorant attitudes and behavior is appropriate.
MAC ATTACK STRIKES AGAIN
The Mac Attack is COMING!!! and with ur awfulness as a pitcher lackey and j-macs awesomeness he’s gonna tear u a new 1 with everytime u face him!!!
Johnny Mac is our 2nd lowest hitter for avg at the moment
can’t blame Lackey for being upset at giving up big hits to him. But he did it in such a way that was unsportsmanlike. He needs to relax, sit down, and continue sucking for the Sox.
HEADING STRAIGHT FOR THEM, I PRESS DOWN MAH GUNS!
If Johnny Mac hit a homer off me
The interview would be a mixture of ****’s and ****’s with the odd connecting word.

I don't see it as a big deal.
McDonald is not a good hitter. You can’t deny that. Career OBP of .275, I don’t get the love for this guy. If he’s your starting third baseman, second baseman, shortstop you’re really hurting. He’s good for an occassional start and as a defensive replacement (cough*Encarnacion*cough) but nothing else, and all Lackey said was that he can’t be giving up homers to a bad hitter like that when you’ve got other guys in the lineup that are more concerning.
However, maybe that is just it. He treated him like the pitcher in the NL, throw fastballs for strikes and, for gawds sake, don’t walk him. Occassionally they get lucky, as McDonald did that evening.
"I don't get the love for this guy"
I’d like to address this part of your post. I’m sure others could do a better job, but I’ll give it a shot.
1) He’s our guy (we don’t care to see them get disrespected or appear to be disrespected)
2) He’s a team guy. (a bench player, knows his role, and thrives in it)
3) He’s a very good defensive player (a highlight reel all by himself, and we love great defence)
4) He’s just a plain likable guy (the kind you pull for)
Hope this helps.
I'm down with all that.
It’s just so funny that a guy like that is more popular than, say, a Joe Carter. I’ll bet he’s more popular than Joey Bats. I’ve heard it mentioned before on the radio, but Toronto fans love to cheer for these guys and don’t seem to care for the stars that much. Although, thinking back, Sundin was wildly popular in his day.
I wonder if part of the appeal is that McDonald is like an ‘everyman’, kind of an underdog to make a major league roster. He’s not 6’2 220 pounds and can hit the lights out and has been counted out so often. We all like to see someone like that succeed. Having said that, I would still prefer that he be on the bench. But if he’s on the bench, than I guess Nix would be starting. Is that any better? Lawrie can’t get here soon enough.
I don't think it's so much the 'everyman' that Toronto fans seem to cheer for
But players that visibly try hard. Seeing a player put in effort seems to make them fan favourites in TO. Even on the Leafs, everyone loved that time Brent blocked like 4 shots in a row. Raptor fans love Reggie Evans, who rebounds like crazy.
We always hear about Mcdonald working so hard, and being prepared for every game and it makes me happy for him when he has success.
Nobody hates John Macdonald
but he has his role for a reason. Career BA of .275 would be nice but OB? Really? (I’m trusting that the stat is true)
I saw it on sportsnet...
… and could hardly believe it. Mac seems like the nicest guy in the league, to say something like that about a classy, humble, hard working, seasoned vetran near the end of their career is just rude.
It’s one thing to take a shot at a guy with a big mouth, or someone who’s had a lot of success, but to go after a career role player to for no reason is trashy. I thought it was bad when A-Rod went after, was it Braden? And he had a reason….
