Rays about to get richer
Unfortunately for the rest of the AL East, the Rays farm is about to become even better. James Shields is an obvious trade candidate, and, after crapping the bed in 2010, he's pitching like a fantastic beast this year.
| GS | IP | K/9 | BB/9 | HR/9 | BABIP | LOB | GB% | HR/FB% | ERA | FIP | xFIP |
| 14 | 103.2 | 8.51 | 2.34 | 1.04 | 0.263 | 84.00% | 44.40% | 12.60% | 2.6 | 3.43 | 2.97 |
And this is not including his 5th complete game today.
He's getting lucky on the BABIP and LOB%, especially considering his 20+ LD%. His HR/FB% is slightly inflated, but his career rates are pretty high anyways. Overall, he's pitching really, really well. Definitely a Cy Young candidate if the season ended today, which it doesnt. Will be very interesting to see what kind of huge haul the Rays will get for him.
Reallignment please. (or no divisions. don't care, just get us out of here)

im just pointing out that Shields is doing well and the Rays will get another huge haul.
Choose me, Ash!
i like hearing things about the other teams.
I get a little bit too much into watching the Jays and don’t see everything that is going on other places.
I'm also trying to hype up shields a bit
So I can trade him :)

good for Pikachu, not so much for me... :-/
But, seriously, it’s great. Masterkembo has done a great job there. It’s just that noobs like me are still wetting their feet.

It's really really fun Ken
And I’m not just sayin this because I’m second place overall.

Yeah, thanks Ken!
I really appreciate the rankings/analysis reports that you provide. With the Jays not doing so well, I think I’m more invested in my Fantasy team. Small ball FTW!!!
my Adam Dunn offer looks a lot better now, doesn't it
did you not have any knowledge of Pujols injury?

Well, no not really.
I wasn’t aware that the injury was serious. I heard that he had a sprain, and thought I could buy low. Whatever, since he still has infinitesimal keeper value

definitely
in a keeper league it will turn out ok. just makes your run for the playoffs tougher this year

oh, its just very specifc on one player, and no rumors of who is trying to get him.
Just seems like an odd one !
Why would the rays trade him. who would they pitch in his place
by bowling_kid25 on Jun 20, 2011 7:53 AM EDT up reply actions
because Shields is a top notch starter and a lot of teams would be willing to shell out prospects to get him
rays have fodder/5th starters that can hold the spot until moore gets up
Choose me, Ash!
The assumption is that the Rays will trade him for a bunch of prospects
And that the prospects will pan out and be ready to immediately help the major league team.
I don’t buy that a team can keep on top by trading its best players for prospects and maintain success. Sooner or later, you’ll hit a prospect that busts and then your team sinks because it no longer has the talent.
If the Rays continuously have a Top 5 farm system they should continue to contend.

this kind of thinking is why the Rays have no fans
a handful of games out of first in baseball’s toughest division in the middle of June and here’s a discussion about them trading a top-flight starter.

The Trop
is why Rays have no fans.
That and old people.
2011 Jays slogan should be "Power and Speed", not just "Hustle and Heart".

there are over 4 million people

well they really dont have any casual fans
but i think their “actual” fans are probably one of the smarter fanbases around. They understand that tradeing Shields at his peak is more beneficial
Choose me, Ash!
I know this isn't the point of your post
but that assumption’s based entirely on the fact that they have a smart front office, right?
It's really hard to get any "casual" fans (whatever that means)
when you trade one of your best pitchers in a year when you have a good chance at reaching the playoffs.
If the Rays are just looking to move their players when they’re at their most valuable, why do they keep running Evan Longoria out there? His contract is so good that every day he’s out there, aren’t they “wasting” surplus value?
Finally, I’m sure that fans of all teams would take exception to the “smarter fanbases” comment. There are plenty of Rays fans who ask meaningful questions about baseball. There are also plenty who mercilessly booed B.J. Upton. You think D-Rays Bay treats the “lazy” argument as instant grounds for banning because their fanbase as a whole is smart?
"Look at me! I'm Tomokazu Ohka of the Montreal Expos!"
Trading Longoria would be a ridiculous move because
they would never be able to get equal value in return…
Unless say, they traded Longo for the top 10 prospects from whatever organization has the best farm system….
Trading Shields makes sense because the Rays have surplus pitching, probably won’t make the playoffs this year, and can get great value back.
Onions Baby Onions
My point is that
people say you want to trade the guy when he’s most valuable to other teams, but that isn’t really true. Do you really think the Rays trading Jamie Shields now would be doing it when he’s most valuable? In fact, Shields maximum value was several years ago when he had several team-control seasons left and was pitching as well as he is now.
The important thing with players is not trading them when they’re at high value, it’s getting value from them — which includes both value from them on the field and value from them in trades. There’s something immensely valuable about having Jamie Shields on the mound for you when you’re in a pennant race in August. If the Rays lay a big egg in July then, yes, it makes sense to trade him. If they continue to play well, it may not make sense to trade a valuable piece that late in the season.
Also, the Rays don’t have surplus pitching right now.
"Look at me! I'm Tomokazu Ohka of the Montreal Expos!"
They've also got Alex Cobb
Who has great minor league numbers and did pretty decently so far in a few MLB starts.
he has been okay in the majors
5.9 k/9, 3.7 bb/9, 50% gb-rate
His xFIP (4.05) is artificially deflated due to a low batting average on balls in play (.269). Even outside of that, he’s been pretty fortunate — he doesn’t pound the zone (% of pitches in zone: 42.0) or induce swinging strikes (whiff%: 6.7). He’s obviously got plenty of time to improve (and likely will), but if he’s going to have any kind of sustained success, those numbers will have to change. He’s not really a useful MLB starter right now, particularly not for a team that is trying to make the playoffs in the AL East
"Look at me! I'm Tomokazu Ohka of the Montreal Expos!"
Nice post
I always say that losing a MLB star is worse than what you get in return. The prospects have to develop successfully whereas a developed MLB star is already what you want. Last time I checked, we are still waiting for the Halladay trade to work out. I am not saying it wont, but it wont work out unless the prospects develop.
yes but its the Rays.
its impossible financially for them to keep their stars not named longoria
Choose me, Ash!
while that's likely true
I think the point of the comment was that trading Shields might not work out for the Rays as well as the post suggests
"Look at me! I'm Tomokazu Ohka of the Montreal Expos!"
