Jay Remove Josh Roenicke From 40-Man Roster, Picked Up by Rockies
The Blue Jays dropped Josh Roenicke from their 40-man roster and he was picked up by the Rockies. Roenicke was having a tough time in Vegas, he had a 6.04 ERA and was walking 6 batters per 9 innings. In 29 games with the Jays over the past two seasons he had a 6.38 ERA. He throws hard but that's about all that he did well for us.
The Jays needed to make room on the 40-man roster for Brett Lawrie.

Lawrie
it’s about effin time!!!! Super 2 be damned time for him to be here!! Shoulda made the club out of spring training but the Jays (for some reason) are too flippin cheap!!
Super 2 shouldn't be an issue
For some reason I remember June 2 as the “safety” date.

i don't think it will be till after the weekend
His hand is pretty swollen. He won’t be called up until he can play a couple of games in Vegas first.

Is Pikachu cocky? ;)
I'm thinking that when the Leafs win the Cup, I'll lose my drinking problem.

Being tiny, yellow, and having an annoying voice....
…would break most people, but i guess you’ve got lots of “confidence”
Wouldn't you be cocky too
if you could electrocute the bajeezus out of people at will?

I must say.
That lineup looks very sexy.

I hope Lawrie's debut isn't on a Monday or Wednesday
I don’t want to miss it!

I think the earliest will be either Wed or Thurs at KC
He probably won’t be in the Vegas lineup until the weekend, so a few games probably push the call up date to Tues or Wed. I guess playing on the road against a weaker Royals team is probably good for building confidence rather than debuting at home against the redsox. though for me it doesn’t really matter.
Please be Tuesday

Couldnt they have traded him for cash or future considerations?
I welcome the idea of Lawrie coming up but hate losing an asset for nothing. Bad business.
It's hardly bad business when there are no alternatives
It’s not like the other GMs don’t know Lawrie is on the cusp of being called up – unless they’re very low down in waiver priority, it’s much wiser to just wait till someone gets bumped off the 40-man roster.
In this case specifically, I would refer you to Roenicke’s numbers this year (via Fangraphs): 6.43 ERA, 5.96 FIP, nearly 1:1 BB/K ratio (and a BABIP close to the norm).
This is all a long way of saying that I’m sure that trade avenues were explored, but, for good reason, no GMs were biting.

It’s really best that they let him go. I don’t think he was going to get much of a shot here and he is an older prospect. So while some scouts believe he has upside with his stuff, he never got it together here and I think it’s a good time to move on.

Why did they make the move now?
If they aren’t planning on calling up Lawrie until next week, why would they drop Roenicke now?
I think he needs to be put on waivers for a couple days
I may be wrong about that, but it just might be that they were preparing for a call-up for todays game before Lawrie hurt his hand. It’s fairly moot, it’s not like Roenicke was going to do anything in the next few days to change their plans.

Not much of a choice.
It would have been nice if Josh could have learned to control his stuff. Oh well, good luck to him.
Wooo Bret’s here.
In honor of the Jays 2nd Baseman who played with fire in more ways than one.

And this is right after he posts 4 swinging strikeouts in 1.1 innings last night?

Yaaaa Budddy!
Might make the trip down if he debuts in KC. Why don’t they announce it already?!!
It depends how long it takes for the swelling to go down in his hand.
My understanding is that it is quite bad at the moment.
Why put him on the 25 man roster if they aren't sure when he can play?
Which leads to: Why announce that he is coming up until they are ready to put him on the 25 man roster?
Which leads to: Why drop a current player from the roster when you might possibly need him between now and when Lawrie actually gets placed on the roster and is able to play?
Mentioned above
They were planning on calling him up, then he got hit in the hand, not the other way around
1 They likely waived Roenicke before the injury, assuming that Lawrie would be up in a couple days
2 Josh Roenicke has very very little value – especially if they know he’s on the way out anyways
