Links for a Thursday
We have afternoon baseball today. Glad to hear the Jays are closing the roof, with it being scary hot out. Also nice to see Snider in CF again, thought putting in center just so we can get Corey Patterson's big bat into the lineup seems a little counter productive. But when Lawrie is up with the team, having Travis in center will give us room to put together a pretty decent lineup.
Some links:
- Bob Elliot has a series on this year's Hall of Famers. Here he talks to Pat Hentgen about Robby Alomar.
- And Bob on the phone call to Pat Gullick.
- Bob on Dave Van Horne. I've said before how I owe a large part of my love of baseball to Dave Van Horne. As much as Tom Cheek deserves to go into the Hall, I'm thrilled that they are sending Dave, he was so good doing those Expo games. I love the story about Ken Singleton 'speaking Japanese'.
- Bob on Bert Blyleven and his time in Saskatchewan.
- One more from Bob Elliot. This time talking to Jack McKeon on the Alomar trade.
- Shi Davidi talks to Edwin Encarnacion.
- Adam Dunn may not have hated baseball before but after this season he might.
Enjoy the game this afternoon.

Great piece on Edwin!
He is scorching hot right now and he made a great play last night that no one will see in a score book. In the 2nd inning, he was on 2nd base and he got ‘back’ on a line drive instead of freezing. Saved us an out. It was perfect!
And thanks to all who have stuck with Eddie….He’s a great kid!
Excuse me but are you related?
He does have a nick name of E5 for a reason. Afew games of good play does not a season make.
Seriously..who still calls him EE?

I respect the fact that EE...
…has worked hard to improve his defense. Yes, I see him mostly as a DH, but if he can provide the type of defense he has since JBau hurt his ankle, he gives Farrell options.
One-dimensional players have limited value. This is one reason I get concerned hearing the chorus of Jays fans that want to sign Prince Feilder. In only a couple of years, his skill set will have deteriorated to the point where he will be only able to DH, and you’d better hope he hits a HR, because he’ll be worse on the base paths than Molina.

but we can sign him to DH
yes, he does lose a lot of value from baserunning, but his bat would fill an immediate need with an elite player. he’s also a poor defender already, so there’s basically no defensive value to begin with. that said, he has a career .390 wOBA, which would be the second-best on the Jays and would really, really upgrade the Jays lineup. EE is just not good enough to DH everyday, though I like him as a bench bat and, say, 3 starts per week player (or as a platoon DH with a righty-mashing lefty).
