Blue Jay Trade Rumors: Colby Rasmus

More and more trade rumors today, which I'm sure pleases Alex Anthopoulos greatly.

Everyone is saying that the Jays have traded Jason Frasor to the White Sox for Edwin Jackson and that Jackson and someone,  maybe Moises Sierra are off to the Cardinals for Colby Rasmus. There must be other parts going to St. Louis.

Ken Rosenthal is saying it is a done deal.

First part of deal is pretty much done: White Sox send Jackson and Teahen to BlueJays for Frasor and Zach Stewart.

Makes me wonder who I'd rather give up at this point.

Thames or Snider? I like them both but I have no clue who will turn out better. Obviously it would be nice if we could keep both.

by Arakasi on Jul 27, 2011 12:12 PM EDT reply actions

Despite all the accolades Snider has gotten

He has still yet to show anything consistent on the field. If AA believes that Snider is more hype than reality, maybe the right move is to trade him because of his perceived bigger value, thus leading to less other prospects having to move hands in the trade.

by Arakasi on Jul 27, 2011 12:15 PM EDT up reply actions

Snider is probably at his lowest value since he was drafted. Or maybe second lowest since he was sent down.

by Nadia on Jul 27, 2011 12:16 PM EDT up reply actions

By every scout/baseball writer who comments on Snider vs Thames

See Keith Law for example, or any other number of analysts on fangraphs or BP I could mention.

by Arakasi on Jul 27, 2011 12:18 PM EDT up reply actions

which is why we're better off keeping Snider

To every complex problem, there is an answer that is simple, easy to understand and wrong

by TO Steve on Jul 27, 2011 12:21 PM EDT up reply actions

Is he though?

Their minor league numbers are rather similar. Their walk rates are too. Snider and Thames have both been hot lately, living on high BABIP and very high K/low Walks rates. The thing is like I said I don’t know who is better. We think Snider is better because of his draft status and that he came up young, but it is quite possible that from here on out Thames is a better player.

by Arakasi on Jul 27, 2011 12:23 PM EDT up reply actions

Exactly. At his lowest value he is valued more highly than Thames at his highest value. There is your answer.

by Nadia on Jul 27, 2011 12:18 PM EDT up reply actions

he's still a lot better than Thames

when he was still a prospect, Snider’s ceiling was much higher than Thames ever was and he is also further along in his deveopment. Including Snider in this deal would be an extreme sell low and uncharacteristic of AA. If he reaches his potential (and there is still plenty of reason to believe he will) he could be at least as valuable as Rasmus. Thames will never be more than a fringe OF.

To every complex problem, there is an answer that is simple, easy to understand and wrong

by TO Steve on Jul 27, 2011 12:18 PM EDT up reply actions

That is if he reaches his potential.

Maybe next year Snider is just thought of as Alex Gordan, another overhyped prospect that never turned out. Then his value would sink fast.

by Arakasi on Jul 27, 2011 12:21 PM EDT up reply actions

maybe you'll be right

but if you trade him and you turn out to be wrong you just undersold on a young, controllable, above average major leaguer. They are much harder to produce than people seem to realize. I’d much rather get stuck with a prospect that didn’t work out than giving one away that did work out.

To every complex problem, there is an answer that is simple, easy to understand and wrong

by TO Steve on Jul 27, 2011 12:23 PM EDT up reply actions

You could apply everything you just said to Thames.

It comes down to the point of what do we think of who is better from here on out. And despite what Tom and others are saying here, it is not that clear cut.

by Arakasi on Jul 27, 2011 12:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Thames by a mile

Snider has been thought of as one of the best hitting prospects in the game coming up, and he is still younger than Thames.

Onions Baby Onions

by ohmybosh on Jul 27, 2011 12:14 PM EDT up reply actions

And now it is 3 years later.

We all hope he’ll break out, but I’m not sure which one of the two will. Snider has better defense, but Thames does have his positives. I like his bat speed for example more than Snider.

by Arakasi on Jul 27, 2011 12:17 PM EDT up reply actions

Thames was a college player. Of course he is older.

The point is that I don’t know if Snider will turn out to be any better than Thames or not. If AA and the Toronto staff think that thames will end up better, why not trade the more valuable player?

by Arakasi on Jul 27, 2011 12:19 PM EDT up reply actions

No ones what anyone is going to turn out.

by Fanamaniac on Jul 27, 2011 12:25 PM EDT up reply actions

by Fanamaniac on Jul 27, 2011 12:26 PM EDT up reply actions

Pretty sure Snider has had a stretch where he played as well as Thames has. You’re first 100 PAs mean very little.

by Nadia on Jul 27, 2011 12:28 PM EDT up reply actions

That's a bit overreaching.

You think Rendon wouldn’t have been drafted high straight out of high school? It’s not as clear cut as you make it Tom. Snider does have better defense, but I don’t see a huge difference between the two offensively now. Similar walk rates, similar K rates, similar issues in that they both have holes in their swing. I’m getting to the point that I’m afraid that Snider will in the next year or so still not make any improvements and will become like Alex Gordon, at which point his trade value will drop fast and we might not get anything out of him.

I like Snider just as much as anyone here, but at some point he has to deliver on his potential. Will he ever? It’s been 3 years has it not, how many more do we have to wait before he comes through?

by Arakasi on Jul 27, 2011 12:26 PM EDT up reply actions

been 3 years of at least MLB average offense at age 23

Thames has had 4 weeks of slightly above average offense at age 24, comparing them at this point is not worth it, no baseball GM would want Thames over Snider

but it’s too early to tell.

This year he's not.

But he still contributes usually. This is a potential based deal, which his potential is HUGE. I think being here in a new environment and with Dave Murphy and our players he will bounce back.

Yunel Escobar v.2.0?

Still 111 wRC+ (above league average)

by Shift on Jul 27, 2011 12:53 PM EDT up reply actions

He’s only 24. He’s put up some good numbers in the minor leagues, and had a very solid season last year. He also has plenty of upside left.

Should be a good .275/.350/.500 with decent speed and OK defence.

our pen was awful, we don´t need to win this year…and you won´t get a guy like Rasmus often for one prospect and 3 relievers
We didn´t need to include Thames, Snider, d´Anauld … this is a good trade for TO

Bullpen arms are easily replaceable. Centerfielders with a 4-WAR season under his belt under the age of 25 are not.

by Shift on Jul 27, 2011 12:56 PM EDT up reply actions

Get Colby Rasmus for a couple of decent pitchers?

Deal with it!

At least a pitcher

I wouldn’t go more than 4 years on Fielder and I don’t think he’ll go less than 6 unless a market doesn’t develop for him

we’re mostly ready to compete by now. get another elite bat and i can see it happen

there are other ways to get an elite bat

make a trade in the offseason. You have to give up pieces but you’ll always get better value than going after a high priced free agent.

I'm reading a lot of love for Rasmus

Being from the St. Louis area and watching Rasmus play centerfield. Corey Patterson can teach him how to go back on a ball hit over his head. Rasmus cost the Cardinals at least 2 games this April with his defense. I am not a fan of Rasmus and I hope a change of scenery will do him well and i am wrong. The only hitting coach Rasmus listens to is Tony Rasmus. I think a lot of the things said about Alex Rios time in Toronto will be what we are saying about Rasmus in 2 years. I would have prefered to keep the pieces we traded and wait on Gose.

by goodbye JP on Jul 27, 2011 1:05 PM EDT reply actions

Uh

Look above. Patterson is apparently part of the deal now.

Usually to win a trade...

You have to get the best player in the deal. We definitely got the best player in this deal, and he is 24? I’m so over the moon right now.

Colby, you have a fresh start! :D :D :D

Satchel Price is pretty impressed with AA’s moves during his tenure, especially this one.
