Blue Jays/White Sox Deal Official: Frasor and Stewart for Jackson and Teahen: Rasmus Deal Almost Done

We get Edwin Jackson and Mark Teahan for Jason Frasor and Zach Stewart.

Not that they will stay around but Jackson has a 7-7 record with a 3.92 ERA in 19 starts. Teahan is  batting .209 with 3 homers and 11 RBI in 50 games with the White Sox

Sad to see Frasor go, but you do have to give something up to get something.

Hearing it will be Jackson, Dotel and Scrabble for Colby Rasmus.

I don't think Thames should be batting 2nd in the long term.

Also, Snider below Lawrie? I think we need to tamp down the immediate major league success expectation.

Bahahaha
As a Cardinals fan, the thought of them making a deal similar to the Braves swap of Yunel Escobar last season – a young player with demonstrated ability having a poor season for an overrated veteran – is scary.
The fact that the Jays have a glaring need in CF should scare you even more. The fact that AA has made public comments this year regarding the potential acquisition of players of this exact ilk should have you downright terrified.

Business is business. Some GMs will get cagier, but others will be more likely to work with him because they know he’s not trying to foist off injured players or snake the rules. With all the multi-team deals he’s been working, I think AA is more becoming the universal lubricant of the MLB trade world. Can’t get a deal done one to one, see if AA will come in and push it over the top.

That’s a very cool place for Toronto to be in.

by kulewhip on Jul 27, 2011 1:32 PM EDT up reply actions

how about Kelly Johnson?

He’s a FA and coming off a down year, so might come somewhat cheap. He’s a RHB with power, so good for the SkyDome. He’s a career .263 hitter with a .312 career BABIP but this year those numbers are .224 and .271, respectively, so he’s due for some upward regression, probably. Even this year, power is there (.222 ISO) and his BB% is ~10. Strikes out a lot, but so do tons of the Jays, so whatever. He’s also a tick above average defensively for his career, though ~0.5WAR/season over the past 2 years. Should be good for ~3WAR with higher upside (2010 put up 5.9 fWAR), which is a big upgrade over our current replacement-level 2B.

Dan Uggla signed this past offseason for 5/62. He had a wayy better track record than Johnson. I say we try to get him for 4/40 or something similar.

by SuckaMD on Jul 27, 2011 2:03 PM EDT up reply actions

oops, he's actually a LHB

but whatever. If we got Fielder, we’d have 5 LHBs with Johnson, Fielder, Lind, Snider, Rasmus, but I think that’s ok.

by SuckaMD on Jul 27, 2011 2:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Ill admit I dont know much about him but he looks like a LH version of hill… low Avg and some pop in his bat.

"You can't always get what you want, the Rolling Stones song was right"
Brian Burke

by kulewhip on Jul 27, 2011 2:06 PM EDT up reply actions

career .263 AVG

basically the same as Hill’s .266 career. But Johnson walks (career .340 OBA) and Hill doesn’t (career .320).

Also, Johnson’s 2009/2010/2011 ISOs are .165/.212/.222
Hill’s: .213/.189/.095.

Hill HAD pop in his bat in 2009, but never had another season with ISO >.200. He doesn’t seem to have the power anymore and doesn’t get on base enough to make up for it. Johnson walks enough that he’s valuable even without the power which shows no signs of slipping away.

Hill’s options cost $8M next year. Yes, we could resign him for less money, but if we can get Johnson for slightly-less-than-Uggla money, I think he’s worth it. Picking up a 3WAR 2B for the Jays adds the full 3WAR to the lineup, since Hill has been replacement level for the last 2 seasons.

by SuckaMD on Jul 27, 2011 2:12 PM EDT up reply actions

Even with Hill

that is a NASTY lineup this year, I can’t even fathom it in 3 years.

Keep bautista at third and delay calling up lawrie until a week into 2012. 1 extra year of team control, see if you can trade from an area of surplus (outfield) to an area of need when the opportunity arises. win/win

Looking at this White Sox-Blue Jays-Cardinals deal as a single, three-team sway, I love what Toronto did, don’t understand what the White Sox did, and like St. Louis’ short-term gain but not the cost or the signal about their internal priorities

by Tom Dakers on Jul 27, 2011 1:48 PM EDT up reply actions

Rasmus was worth over 4 wins last year per Fangraphs’ wins above replacement despite being misused much of the year and showing up as a below-average defender in center, which I don’t expect him to be long-term. He’ll slide Travis Snider back to a corner, and should no longer have to worry about where he’s hitting in the lineup or whether he’s in it at all. The acquisition has some risk, as it’s possible Rasmus has peaked or just doesn’t have the makeup to get along with any coaching staff, but I doubt either of those things is true. And over the long haul you always want to bet on high-upside talent when you can.

by Tom Dakers on Jul 27, 2011 1:49 PM EDT up reply actions

The Cardinals, meanwhile, have made a terrible organizational move by allowing their aging manager to run off the best hitting prospect the team has produced since drafting Albert Pujols. Whether La Russa was mostly responsible or only shares responsibility with Rasmus and his father, it is clear that La Russa’s my-way-or-the-highway mentality has hurt the organization for this year and several years to come with the Rasmus fiasco, and unfortunately the front office’s decision to retain La Russa for 2011 has come back to haunt them. Rasmus has the potential to be a 5- to 6-win player at his peak, and there’s no manager in baseball who can produce that kind of value.

by Tom Dakers on Jul 27, 2011 1:57 PM EDT up reply actions

Funny, people were getting on Snider because he's had a few cracks at the majors and has struggled.

And he’s younger. Yet no one seems to be saying that about Rasmus. I love the upside of this deal and really hope this works out. Interesting that a lot of the same people that are going crazy about Rasmus right now were so much harder on Snider though.

by transmogrifier on Jul 27, 2011 2:12 PM EDT up reply actions

Your analysis is very superficial. He’s still an above average batter this year (111 wRC+), which is a bad year for him, and he plays a premium position (harder to find good bats that can play in CF), and he’s young, and he has tons of potential, and he’s not Corey Patterson. Win, win, win, win, WIN.

FWIW

i really thought he was going to be part of our starting 5. I think he’s fully capable of starting.
But again, he’s been very, very good coming out of the Pen.

by Bowling_Guy25 on Jul 27, 2011 2:06 PM EDT up reply actions

He definitely has the talent to start.

He was a better fit for the Jays in the bullpen since they lost Scott Downs to the Angels.

What I saw from him as a starter were problems staying in the game long, he ususally didn’t go much more than 5 innings. Not sure if it was concentration/focus issues or if he doesn’t have the stamina. Great stuff though.

by transmogrifier on Jul 27, 2011 2:17 PM EDT up reply actions

Based on what I've seen of him.

Fastball in the high 80s low 90s. Excellent downward movement on his fastball.
Most of the time his control is okay, but once in a while he loses it and it gets ugly.

Very good slider, but again he sometimes has control issues.

Changeup… not so much.

Tallet has historically also been very good against lefties

it’s not actually that hard to find a LOOGY. Frasor is good, but it’s not like he’s Rivera. He’s replaceable, too (hence why he accepted arbitration since noone would give up a draft pick to sign him)

I'm not so sure about Stewart

I saw a couple of his starts and wasn’t impressed. Average fastball and he never threw a changeup. He’s probably reliever material like a lot of scouts said.

news on tallet
Brian Tallet has been diagnosed with polycystic kidney disease.Cardinals doctors found cysts along Tallet’s kidney this weekend while running a CT scan on his strained intercostal muscle. “Some cases are worse than others,” the left-hander said Sunday. “Right now, my case is that all of my levels are normal and everything is fine with them, but I’ve got cysts in the kidneys. Now, it’s just a matter of maintaining the levels that I’m at by drinking more water.” He’s unlikely to return before the end of July. Jul 11, 10:03 AM

Jeez. Now I feel bad for crapping on the guy.

Cysts anywhere on the body are bad news. Had one get infected and needed abdominal surgery to remove it and other parts of my body.

PCKD is fairly common and not necessarily that serious (as it seems in Tallet's case)

and lost of other people without the fullblown polycystic disease have one or several kidney cysts without ever having symptoms or even knowing about it unless they have a CT or ultrasound for some other reason

Wow, just saw the trade. Not liking it in the slightest. They sure gave up a lot to get Rasmus. I mean, what was the point of making the trade with the White Sox? Give up Frasor and Stewart for a guy hitting .203 and a pitcher they immediately sent to Cards? And they just made their BP a lot worse than I thought it could get. I sure hope Rasmus was worth everything.

by Icedragon on Jul 27, 2011 3:26 PM EDT reply actions

But Frasor going to the White Sox was to get Edwin, since the Cardinals wanted immediate rotation help.

by benk on Jul 27, 2011 3:54 PM EDT up reply actions

in fact

pretty much, he’s Colby Rasmus 2011 as a minimum (as Yunel of first-half 2010 was his minimum)

WAR... WAR never changes.

by benk on Jul 27, 2011 3:55 PM EDT up reply actions

I was using a current Jay as a comparison. Patterson has speed but doesn’t always take the best routes and has the occasional brain fart when backing up a play. He also fails to take command in CF. From what I have read, Rasmus is a bit that way on defense as well. Patterson has more speed but doesn’t use it efficiently.

On offense, the biggest differences are in the power department and eyes, which are areas in which Rasmus is clearly superior.

by siggian on Jul 27, 2011 4:16 PM EDT up reply actions

We've possibly made some room.

Perez could end up back with the team. He did good as a long man.

by Alan F. on Jul 27, 2011 3:34 PM EDT up reply actions

Agree, he will replace Scrabble.

Shouldn’t be a big problem there. Janssen pitches against lefties well too.

The only guy I will miss is Frasor, despite past frustrations with him he really has settled down into a very steady and capable reliever, maybe the Jays resign him since he likes Toronto so much.

As for the rest… Scrabble is replaceable, as is Dotel… Patterson – see ya! Stewart was intriguing but if losing him is part of the price for Rasmus, it’s worth it.

by transmogrifier on Jul 27, 2011 4:22 PM EDT up reply actions

no

that’s entirely unfair, to judge a trade in hindsight. GMs don’t get to use it when they make trades, so it’s entirely unfair to judge it with hindsight in the equation

WAR... WAR never changes.

by benk on Jul 27, 2011 3:38 PM EDT up reply actions

The Jays gave up relievers in this deal

Frasor and Dotel are relievers. R-Zep because of his control problems will likely never be a starter. Stewart has been projected as a reliever by most scouts for awhile now and based on the average fastball and lack of changeup I saw in his 3 starts, I see why they say that. So the Jays traded 4 relief pitchers for a young, talented CF who BA rated as the #3 prospect pre-2009 and who has a career 111 OPS+.

Relief pitchers are easily replaced. In fact, we got back one who was ok as long as he was only used in relief (Tallet). Oh yeah, we gave up Corey Patterson too, which is addition by subtraction.

Hic sunt fortuna dracones

by JaysfanDL on Jul 27, 2011 4:14 PM EDT up reply actions

He is..

It’s a good deal. We gave up some good bullpen arms and a good prospect in Stewart and got back one of the top young players. Think about the Escobar – Gonzalez deal and you have a comparable. Except Rasmus could be our second best hitter, playing CF, a premium position, right now.. but most likely by next year once he has some time to get his confidence back and start loving his new shirt.

by khaleeji on Jul 27, 2011 3:40 PM EDT up reply actions

Think we can trade Hill, Camp, Frank, and a decent prospect for Rickie Weeks?

Then sign Fielder as the DH in the offseason.

Definately some more trade pieces.

You’re fantasizing when it comes to Fielder though.

I think we need to factor in other things like Teahen's contract, not sure if you've factored that.

Not sure but thought I read he has one for 5.5 million next year. Not to mention whatever cash consideration go into the Rasmus deal and some kind of buyout or cost associated with Tallet – otherwise why include him?

That said, still lots of cash available. They’ll need to resign Hill or another 2B, probably sign a couple of relievers. A closer please.

Got to be pleased to get such a high upside player for so little. Frasor and Rzepczynski goof relievers, but Stewart hasn’t torn up AA. Still, Centre fielder for 2/3 moderately important players. Got to do it.

WAR... WAR never changes.

by benk on Jul 27, 2011 4:57 PM EDT up reply actions

coming from our system

unless they’re already relievers in the minors, you can tell AA’s philosophy is that guys in the minors are just fill ins or failed starting prospects. just chips to use in a trade or get draft picks. until we are true contenders don’t expect the jays to try and turn a great prospect into a closer, because if they do, they are basically saying he’s failed & they’re willing to move him lol. there is that 1 guy we drafted this year though in the 3rd or 4th round whos got arm problems but can reach high 90’s, that guy could be a realistic option cause he sounds like hes going to be a reliever only type pitcher, and the jays knew that when drafting him.

so ya, dont expect big name prospects to be turned into relievers in the jays system until we are serious contenders, then we’ll do what we need to to win. jays want all their prospects to be starters until they know it won’t work, then move them to the pen

by TheMainEvent on Jul 27, 2011 5:03 PM EDT up reply actions

no, that's not what I'm referring to

the doctors just think that McGowan’s (obviously fragile) arm will respond better to a starter’s workload than a reliever’s

WAR... WAR never changes.

by benk on Jul 27, 2011 5:04 PM EDT up reply actions

i know that

so now if we can figure out 2nd base we have an insane & young lineup 1-9

sign reyes at SS and move escobar to 2nd base? i heard that the jays management has said they’re going to make a big splash in FA this year & will go after a big gun….. that would fit so perfect, reyes leading off OH BOY. reyes, snider, bautista, lind, thames, rasmus, lawrie, escobar, aarencibia soon to be ddarnaud. thats an insane lineup!

by TheMainEvent on Jul 27, 2011 4:49 PM EDT reply actions

We should get Reyes and Fielder.

Our lineup 1-9 would be dangerous and have a great balance of lefties/righties

by SD37 on Jul 27, 2011 4:52 PM EDT up reply actions

we should

but, like, actually. we have the money and those two fill what are easily our two biggest (hell, maybe only) lineup holes (assuming we slide Esco or Reyes to 2B).

WAR... WAR never changes.

by benk on Jul 27, 2011 4:54 PM EDT up reply actions

Its just like you were saying previously

If we sign those two, we still have money in our alleged budget to add to our rotation/bullpen, and our lineup will be set for the next decade. If we sign them both this year, how does compensation work with them both being Type A free agents?

by SD37 on Jul 27, 2011 4:55 PM EDT up reply actions

we lose first and second round picks

plus Milwaukee and the Mets get supplementary picks, but those just come out of thin air – we don’t lose them. and yeah, we’d have a ridonkydonk lineup

WAR... WAR never changes.

by benk on Jul 27, 2011 4:56 PM EDT up reply actions

i think going after 1 big name would be a lot

gotta realize how much we’re spending to get all these rookie highschoolers away from their universities, on getting more draft picks then normal, on signing dominican/cuban/venezualain players, on doubling our scouting departement, on paying extra money and signing players like tehan & riviera to make deals such as this happen. The jays are spending a ton of money, it just doesn’t show up on their major league roster books. i think if they made a splash to get 1 big name I would be extremely thankful, they’re spending tons of money in the right places already to build a contender for many years.

by TheMainEvent on Jul 27, 2011 4:55 PM EDT up reply actions

No Reyes

He’s having a great season this year, sure, he’s going to want to have a large improvement on his current 5 yrs/$33.75M and played only 257 out of 427 games over the last 3 seasons (2009-2011). His injury history doesn’t warrant such a large commitment.

I just got home and wow, what a deal. I didn’t think Rasmus would cost as much as thought but we basically gave depth players to get a potential star.

Excellent deal. Great work AA!!!

by Sniderlover on Jul 27, 2011 5:01 PM EDT reply actions

AA says Miller will be the LOOGY for now, Perez will be up soon tho and we’ll see them both is my guess…

Also Mike McCoy seems like he will be sent down in the next couple days as we now have 14 position players on our 25 man roster when teams rarely carry more than 13. Teahen will prolly stick around a few days until Lawrie is ready and then DFA’d so AA has a little more time to move him…

by WizardofNaz on Jul 27, 2011 5:15 PM EDT up reply actions

Noooooooooooo
AA says Lawrie won’t be here this week or in Tampa Tuesday. “He’s getting there but he’s not there yet.”

by Nadia on Jul 27, 2011 5:09 PM EDT reply actions

dont rush it

let him get back to where he was getting more walks than strikeouts and hitting like 400. when he gets back there he’s ready & it’ll pay off in the majors when he has a better eye for it

by TheMainEvent on Jul 27, 2011 5:11 PM EDT up reply actions

no hes not

look at the games since he’s returned. hes striking out way more than walking

by TheMainEvent on Jul 27, 2011 5:12 PM EDT up reply actions

look at last 10 games

http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/stats/stats.jsp?pos=3B&sid=milb&t=p_pbp&pid=543434

and look before he was hurt, he was talking more walks then striking out, not even close to that yet. he’ll get there in a couple weeks, then he’ll be ready

by TheMainEvent on Jul 27, 2011 5:18 PM EDT up reply actions

nah just the gameday

and audio feed. but its pretty detailed with how they hit the ball in the gameday. mostly i just read the box score to see how hes doing, the bb/so’s are what i’m watching. once we see him start taking more walks then strikeouts consistently again expect his callup. hes going to have to do it like 3-5 games in a row tho. he also is hitting good, but not slugging as much (not as many doubles, triples, homeruns) so hes not back to form, thats for sure. def 1-3 weeks away

by TheMainEvent on Jul 27, 2011 5:30 PM EDT up reply actions

by Nadia on Jul 27, 2011 5:36 PM EDT up reply actions

i watch the games

just not on tv. but i do watch them. and whats important is the stats, just compare them to before he was hurt, you’ll see the huge difference & know what to look for and when to expect the call up

by TheMainEvent on Jul 27, 2011 5:39 PM EDT up reply actions

Nevermind.

I just want to end that discussion. I really don’t care.

Take it with a grain of salt

With Edwin and Teehan on the roster now, one of them has to be moved before he is called up. AA is probably going to try and get something for one of them before the trade deadline.

Nope but he saw an opportunity to gain a potential superstar and took it, now he’ll work out the trickle down effect. Not a bad move by him at all.

i never freaking said it was

all i said is i don’t like that he doesn’t have a plan currently for them.

by Bowling_Guy25 on Jul 27, 2011 5:20 PM EDT up reply actions

And I agreed with that part, I was more directing the 2nd part of my statement to the person who first freaked out on you. I agree it was more of an impulse move as he made the move knowing it would cause a bit of a headache in the outfield in terms of having too many players, however he did this knowing adding the star player and then dealing with the leftovers later is the best way to do it. It would’ve been worse if he held off on the Rasmus trade until he could find a taker for Davis

by WizardofNaz on Jul 27, 2011 5:27 PM EDT up reply actions

I didn’t even hear what the Rays were offering. However the Rays would have to move Upton first as if they got Rasmus the price for Upton would drop as everyone knows they’d have to move him really, which gave AA an advantage

by benk on Jul 27, 2011 5:26 PM EDT up reply actions

Yep there is a difference between a Sept call up and a mid season one. Mostly because the rosters expand so the callup isn’t at the expense of someone else…

that too.

WAR... WAR never changes.

by benk on Jul 27, 2011 5:29 PM EDT up reply actions

Yep he didn’t think he’d have the chance to move Davis or possibly Thames and now he has to deal with Teahen, as he won’t likely be a Jay for very long. Bottom line is AA made the trade knowing he created a logjam that he would now have to fix. Now he goes back to the phones to work out the next set of trades.

by WizardofNaz on Jul 27, 2011 5:21 PM EDT up reply actions

Just because he says there’s no other trades lined up doesn’t mean there won’t be more trades…

by Dr_Furious on Jul 27, 2011 5:36 PM EDT up reply actions

Didn’t he say they weren’t planning on doing anything this trade deadline?

by Nadia on Jul 27, 2011 5:37 PM EDT up reply actions

gives AA a few more days to clear up the log jam for sure… McCoy will probably go down for a pitcher to give us 13 players an 12 pitchers like most teams carry. Then AA will work the phones on Teahen and maybe even Davis and create an opening for Lawrie (DFA Teahen in about 2 weeks is my guess).

by WizardofNaz on Jul 27, 2011 5:18 PM EDT up reply actions

I think EE will be DFA’s before Teahan, and here is why. EE is a free agent, and Teahan is still under contract next year at $5.5 mil. They both can be backup 3rd and 1st as well as dh. Teahan’s contract is rather big to eat right now in my opinion.

Hardly. It would require Rogers to put up about $105M in payroll next year, but probably doable. I may put up a fanpost on how later tonight.

by SuckaMD on Jul 27, 2011 5:31 PM EDT up reply actions

105 next year but that doesn’t really set you up to sign Morrow, Snider, Rasmus on deals.

by Nadia on Jul 27, 2011 5:32 PM EDT up reply actions

they're all entering arbitration (Morrow might only have 2 more arb seasons after 2011)

which means they’ve got time, and if you need to trade them you trade them. we’ve got pitching depth

WAR... WAR never changes.

by benk on Jul 27, 2011 5:33 PM EDT up reply actions

besides that

(dunno how accurate this is, but) Rogers has said they could bring the payroll up to like 140M if the players are right

by benk on Jul 27, 2011 5:34 PM EDT up reply actions

the 105M figure includes likely arbitration awards for next year

and raises for the season after would mostly come from guys like Rauch, Davis, and Teahen coming off the books. I’ll fanpost it up soon.

by SuckaMD on Jul 27, 2011 5:34 PM EDT up reply actions

you can't worry more than 4-5 years into the future

because that’s just so far from now. I’m not saying “spend indiscriminately” I’m saying “spend now so we can make a run while Bautista is still a monster.” it might handicap us a little bit in a few years, but I’d trade a young guy or two in a few years for some elite players now

no

but we wouldn’t have done what we did in that draft if we weren’t prepaired to spend way over the recommended to get most of those highschool players. this is our last year to possibly pull off a draft like this with rule changes possibly coming, i think the jays knew that and took full advantage.

either way spending as much and for the amount of years that BOTH reyes and fielder would want is just too much, we need to pay for tons of propsects coming, we don’t need those 2 guys to be overpaid for too long to be on the team. i can see going for 1, reyes, that gives us a great lineup 1-9 right away. but both is just overspending, we aren’t the yankees or redsox, we are taking a different method and need to follow through spending properly

Also Hech is never going to be a power hitter, he’s going to be Ichiro in his approach which is get on base.

by WizardofNaz on Jul 27, 2011 5:31 PM EDT up reply actions

hes not going to be ichiro lol

he cant hit the ball all over the field to my knowledge, and ichiro has power and tons of extra base hitting, lots of shots to the gaps. its not like ichiro just bloops and slaps balls all the time, hes a great hitter, and if wanted to could prolly be a great power hitter but he just wants to get on base everytime

by TheMainEvent on Jul 27, 2011 5:32 PM EDT up reply actions

I read it that way at first too

But then he says ‘in his approach’
So you’re both saying the same thing. They both are trying to get on base.

by Nadia on Jul 27, 2011 5:33 PM EDT up reply actions

they're not comparable

ichiro can and does try to put the ball wherever he wants. right now hech is just happy to make contact, let alone get a hit, let alone put it somewhere he wants to on the field?

by TheMainEvent on Jul 27, 2011 5:37 PM EDT up reply actions

I've heard Hech has very good hand-eye coordination..

and usually makes contact, I think his hitting problems could be based off of his pitch selection, or maybe an adjustment the coaches wanted him to make in his swing during ST.

Ichiro has also been doing this for 15 years longer than Hech… but I just meant Hech will succeed even without power if he can become a high OBP guy even if his OPS is low.

by WizardofNaz on Jul 27, 2011 5:39 PM EDT up reply actions

Yah sorry I wasn’t clearer. Ichiro has more power than most power hitters… have you ever seen his BP? Hech will never be that good, but I meant Hech shouldn’t worry about hitting HR’s and XBH’s he should get on base and use his speed. If he can get a lot of singles and take walks for an OBP of .375 ish it doesn’t matter if his OPS is only .750 his glove will make him a high level SS

by WizardofNaz on Jul 27, 2011 5:37 PM EDT up reply actions

though actually

he doesn’t strike out much (only 14.4%, which is pretty good). could stand to take some walks, but his BABIP is super low – though in the Minors, it’s completely possible he hits too many grounders/IFFBs

Amazing

This is a great trade for us. With our coaching staff Rasmus will become an allstar. When you think about it, we only lost 3 players who weren’t hired for the sole purpose of being stopgaps and future draft picks. We lose Frasor, who is getting up there in age, Scrabble, who while better thn expected wasnt amazing, and Stewart, who isnt as good as the other ptching prospects in our system just more major league ready.
