The Blue Jays Need To Add Michael Young

If Michael Young is a Blue Jay this year this is a playoff team.

Rock the lineup of:

1:Yunel/Rajai

2: Thames/Patterson/Yunel

3: Jose

4: Adam Lind/Michael Young

5:Michael Young/Adam Lind

6: Travis Snider/Brett lawrie

7: J.P. Arencibia/Molina

8: Aaron Hil/Brett Lawrie

9: Edwin/Johnny Mac/Rajai

Pitchers don't get a break!

Our lineup would be deadly, not only that but our defense would be improved, you could platoon Young and Johnny Mac at 3B to save his knees and use him as a DH. I know we would have to get rid of Corey Patterson or Edwin but it would be worth every penny.

Our lineup then goes to

C: Arencibia/Molina, 1B: Adam Lind/Young, 2B: Aaron Hill/Lawrie/Johnny Mac, SS: Yunel/Johnny Mac, 3B: Michael Young/ Johnny Mac, RF: Jose, CF: T Snider/Rajai, LF: Thames/Snider/Patterson, DH: Edwin/Young/Lind

Personally, I would like to see Patterson gone. I know he's a lefty bat but we would be better suited with Snider anyway. If we can add Michael Young he really makes us a contender. Our pitching has not been dominant but it has been good if not great and with they way things are going if we add Michael Young we instantly become a playoff team.

A playoff team? I think you may be over-estimating the influence Young would have the lineup. With the exception of Lind and Bautista and to a certain extend Escobar we haven’t exactly been hitting like all-stars.

Not to mention our pitching.

Precisely

This team is not having problems scoring runs (generally), but it is having problems stopping the opposition from scoring runs. Young doesn’t help with the latter

I could see Jose convincing AA to sign Big Papi next year.

They’re best friends and they would mash a ton at RC. Maybe they can get him at a discounted rate.

Well Ortiz did back Jose last year when he was snubbed for the Derby

And they both seemed to acknowledge friendshipmwhen asked about it in interviews yesterday prior to the game.

Young at thrid till Lawrie comes up (lets say aftre half the seasom), then move him to DH would improve the teams WAR

Our third baseman’s accumulated WAR (1/2 season) >> 0
Young’s >> 1.4 (-.2 dWAR)
Young Total WAR over season >> 3 WAR, while being completely over paid
Our third basemen + Lawrie >> giving Lawrie a very conservative WAR of 1 per season you would have our third basemen accumulate .5 WAR

So for a lot more money you make the team about 2 WAR better, if you had him this entire season. If we acquire him now you would probably only improve about 1 WAR, for a hell of a lot more money. And that’s amusing that EE is a wash at DH.

Lets add Justin Verlander, Clayton Kershaw, Matt Kemp, Francisco Rodriguez also.

by JayTeam on Jul 6, 2011 2:50 PM EDT reply actions

Young is very aquireable

If thats even a word. He’s platooning at 3b and DH for Texas who struggles to get their young guys in.

Micheal Young is a perfect fit for this ball club, he would add a nice veteran do it all guy to the clubhouse but still has a quiet presence about him. i honetly think its a great fit.

and another $32 million for '12 and '13

Plus he’ll be 36 by the 2013 season. Someone may have misinterpreted comments about AA concentrating on young high upside players.

by JayTeam on Jul 6, 2011 4:04 PM EDT up reply actions

And that kills any chance of him being here in Toronto.

Double A wants to spend a lot of money into drafting and development and all that.
He doesn’t really care for the free agent market.
Though apparently AA was interested in Dan Uggla, which is news to me.

just cos you can do something

doesn’t mean you should. why in the name of Superman would we increase our payroll by 25% for an aging, defensive-liability player who may or may not be a locker room malcontent?

Young is an average offensive hitter

With no position to play and making way too much money. Texas can have him. And I wish them luck finding a sucker to pick him up like we did with Wells. At least Wells can play in the OF still.

by Arakasi on Jul 6, 2011 4:13 PM EDT up reply actions

he's not, actually

the past 3 years he has wRC+’d 130, 106 and this year 124. he’s pretty excellent offensively, he’s just a terrible fit for this team

by benk on Jul 6, 2011 4:24 PM EDT up reply actions

have you seen his home/away splits?

I know wRC+ is supposed to account for that to some extent, but his career wRC+ at home is 126, while on the road it’s 91. I’d be wary of moving him from Arlington.

woah.

I had not. he’s even worse of a fit than I had thought! I didn’t actually think that was possible

by benk on Jul 6, 2011 4:40 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah he's average.

Any player from Texas you have to take that into account. With the intro of the humidor in Colorado it is the best offensive ballpark in baseball.

by Arakasi on Jul 6, 2011 5:23 PM EDT up reply actions

Also makes you wonder about Wells

Why did LA take him when they knew that Well’s numbers much more suited Rogers Center than their own ballpark.

by Arakasi on Jul 6, 2011 5:24 PM EDT up reply actions

there are much bigger reasons

to wonder about concerning why LA took Vernon. but wRC+ is supposed to be park-adjusted, as hugo said, maybe it doesn’t adjust for splits? strange, anyway.

by benk on Jul 6, 2011 5:29 PM EDT up reply actions

And really?

Do it all? What can Young do it all? He can play DH and hit slightly above averagely. There are plenty of players we can get that from for less than 15 million a year.

There is a reason he is quite aquireable as you put it……

Why would we try to get a player that doesn't play good defense

when we have several on the team already?

Jose Bautista has a higher midi-chlorian count than you do.

some players that don't play good defense

are still good players (see: Bautista, Jose)

by benk on Jul 6, 2011 6:05 PM EDT up reply actions

In my biased opinion that is in no way supported by research or statistics

I believe that Jose’s defense in right is far better than Young’s defense at any position.
That said, I am not arguing against your point, which is perfectly valid.

oh Young is bad and I don't want him near this team

Indeed he does.

He’s got a no trade clause. So either way he’s not going to be coming (thankfully).

Michael Young as a jay

Exactly what I was thinking about six months ago, when I read reports that Young was unhappy with the amount of playing time he was getting. And being a former jay prospect, he might be willing to come play in Toronto. I don’t know why they didn’t try to get him at the start of the year, but I suspect finances were the major concern. They figured they could get as much production from EE for less money and if that didn’t work, why there always was Lowrie in the minors ready to come up. It backfired on them however. 3rd Base has been a sore spot for the jays all season, with no one putting up even semi-respectable numbers.

by David Hickie on Jul 21, 2011 6:59 PM EDT reply actions

Michael young as a jay

Some of the commenters ask why the jays should acquire an aging slugger whose best hitting and fielding days are behind him. Then I remember the players the jays acquired in the early 90s, Paul Molitor, Dave Winfield and Ricky Henderson, all of whom met that description. So maybe their best days were behind them, but they provided that veteran presence which pulled the jays to 2 World Series championships. Thats why you would acquire a Michael Young, for those intangibles which you know they possess, and which you don’t know your other players have.
