Quick Question: Adam Loewen, David Cooper or Travis Snider?

Really hoping you aren't hurt, Adam, just curious. (Photo by Thearon W. Henderson/Getty Images)

Quick question for you all: If Adam Lind is hurt (I haven't heard anything yet, I'm hoping not), who would you prefer the Jays call up to take his place, Adam Loewen, David Cooper or Travis Snider?

Now Loewen and Cooper can play first. If it were Snider, Edwin Encarnacion would have to play first and Thames would DH with Travis playing LF, at least in my imagination.

At Vegas Loewen is hitting .307/.378/.514, with 16 home runs. For August he is hitting .254/.351/.353. His manager, Marty Brown really likes him and he can play outfield. He's in a bit of a slump at the moment.

Cooper is hitting .371/.444/.553 at Vegas. For August .333/.429/.391, so the power numbers are down the last 3 weeks.

For his time in Vegas this season, Snider is hitting .327/.394/.480. In August .298/.353/.447, he's had a couple of home runs his last five games.

I am hoping Lind is ok, but I'm curious to as to who you guys would like to see called up, if needed.

I gotta go with Coop, I think he deserves a longer look this year at the big league level, bring up Loewen in September.

Cooper

I don’t know how severe bautista’s neck is, but if he can play, we don’t need an OF. if its just going to be 1B/DH, it has to be cooper

I also voted for Cooper. I like that he walks more than he strikes out and I think his numbers are exciting enough that we need to see him on a rebuilding year, and EE is hitting well enough that were probably going to keep him. I think Lind is a solid player, but I don’t like that he doesn’t take a walk which leaves a pretty big whole in the lineup when he’s slumping.

I also think Lind has reasonable trade value, and the jays could gain a pretty decent pitcher or second baseman (although I hope Hech’s hot streak is a turnaround for him) in a package with Lind, without losing much production in having Cooper at first. Seeing Cooper for a decent stint would help us with that decision.

In my Jays fan heart I want Snider to get one more solid chance this year.

Although in my head that’s not the right answer.

Snider

Let’s not forget, we’ve only got a week and a half before rosters expand and Cooper comes up anyways. EE can handle 1B until that happens, I think. Cooper’s the long-term solution, I think Snider is the right answer for the interim.

Despite Having 72 RBIs

He really hasn’t been great he has a 0.9 WAR and a only slightly above average wRC+. Alot of the numbers he has are based on where he is hitting in the lineup. He was doing well earlier in the year but since then not really. So why not try Cooper, trade Lind? He doesn’t seem to be the long term solution at first base at least in my eyes he will only be fine until we find someone better.

Brett Lawrie: 0.9

by Bluebirdz on Aug 21, 2011 1:57 PM EDT up reply actions

you're correct

but his BABIP is very low despite very good batted ball numbers; and if his BABIP regresses positively as it should, he should be a 3-or-so win 1B. not elite, but far from bad. I really don’t think Cooper, who’s never had an ISO over .190, will be able to sustain the on-base skills he’s shown in the Minors

by benk on Aug 21, 2011 1:58 PM EDT up reply actions

by benk on Aug 21, 2011 2:00 PM EDT up reply actions

but you might as well try, at least give him a better shot then he got earlier in the season.

by Bluebirdz on Aug 21, 2011 2:01 PM EDT up reply actions

why?

we already have a good 1B, Cooper’s ceiling’s not that high IMO. why might as well try? I honestly don’t see what we could gain from giving Cooper 80 plate appearances

by benk on Aug 21, 2011 2:02 PM EDT up reply actions

if we want to take a gander at the new Should Hit statistic

if Lind’s BABIP was .310 (maybe even a little low given his >23% LD rate) he’d be wRC+ing 125. that would put him on pace for about 3 wins, as I said, and maybe closer to 3.5 if his defense is in fact as good as it looks (as we know, UZR kind of sucks for 1Bs)

by benk on Aug 21, 2011 2:06 PM EDT up reply actions

and use of an xBABIP calculator

suggests his BABIP should actually be closer to .320, giving him around a 130 wRC+ (!)

by benk on Aug 21, 2011 2:11 PM EDT up reply actions

Thats good to hear

I didn’t delve that far into the numbers and maybe I should have, but my argument stands on bringing up Cooper instead of Snider or Loewen.

Yes

But again what is the harm in giving Cooper a chance, even if you don’t think he is the long term answer. Why not build up potential trade value for the offseason. Cooper could be a fine compliementary piece in a given trade in the offseason, Loewen on the other hand would not be. Then to make the case to keep Snider in the minors, the Jays seem like they want him to be with them long term so he wouldn’t be building any trade value and we have already jerked him around enough this season, he wasn’t doing well during his last call-up (except at the begining) so why not let him get some “Matolla Magic” in the minors while building trade value for a guy who we may not see as our long term option.

If it's only Lind out, Cooper.

Cooper has to get the call here. The Jays could get him some extra MLB experience which could be good if they look at an offseason trade involving Coop since McDade is likely to be our Triple-A 1B next year.

If Bautista is out with neck pain, though, Loewen could get the call given his exp at RF but also to get MLB experience for the same, albeit far less likely, reasons as mentioned above.

Cooper for now ...

Calling up Cooper would give him 2 weeks of uninterrupted playing time for evaluation while allowing Loewen time at firstbase in LV which would give him some prep time for September . Snider should be allowed to continue his newer approach unless he’s ready now in which case Thames should be sent down .

by jgadfly on Aug 21, 2011 2:06 PM EDT reply actions

Cooper

I think the plus side to bring up Cooper for the short term, you could showcase him and trade him in the off season for a pitcher or 2nd baseman.

*Jays fan since 1977*

by ZzMANzZ on Aug 21, 2011 2:22 PM EDT reply actions

Cooper,

But only because:
1)Snider is terrible. Needs to learn to consistently take walks, or he’ll never be a starting ML OF. With his poor contact rate he can’t afford to be chasing outside the zone. I’ve been optimistic on Snider for a long time but that’s larely because I was being a homer and ignoring his plate dicipline. Can’t do it anymore. It’s a major flaw and I don’t know that it can be corrected.

2)Loewen will be lucky to hit .240 in Toronto. Has power and I hope they take a look in september, but aside from the ‘cool story’ factor, Loewen is not a good prospect.

by Waveburner on Aug 21, 2011 2:23 PM EDT reply actions

right, he's terrible

that’s why he OPSes 1050 every time he goes down to AAA, and, hilariously, is still fairly young for the level

but 400 OBA (over 9% BBs, under 16% Ks)

which suggests that he could be OPSing better than that if he wasn’t explicitly trying to work on things
