Obviously...
…AA read Tom’s interview and was convinced that McCoy is ready to shoulder the heavy burden of utility infielder and cheerleader, thus making Mac expendable.
This seems like it could be a lateral move, swapping disappointing second basemen who have similar upsides. It could be a really bad clubhouse/image move though, getting rid of two great guys who were prepared to spend their careers in Toronto.
Interesting to note on Johnson (after a quick glance at his Fangraph page), he’s showing season after season decline in his contact rates and a season by season increase in his swinging strike rates, which points to a loss of bat speed and is usually a huge red flag.
One interesting thing to note… Kelly is only one spot away from being Type A status in the Elias rankings. So if AA wants to re-sign Kelly, he will get a 2 month head start. If he doesn’t, we can potentially get type A bounty in return and at the very least a supplementary pick. This is classic AA philosophy working here.

Can someone explain to me
How Type A/Type B status is determined?
top 20% of players at a given position (middle infielders, corner infield/DH, etc)
are Type A – top 20% determined by a nearly completely arbitrary set of statistics chosen by ELIAS Sports Bureau. the next 20% are Type B.

Right
That’s what I read as well. is there a link where I can see the top 20%?
The official list...
…comes out at the end of the season. At MLBTR they have reverse engineered the formulas, but not 100% accurately, and post updates about one a month.

hmm
too much accounting in this trade IMO
i guess there’s a lot we don’t know.
this guy strikes out a lot… meh
It's good to see HIll and Johnny Mac on a winning team
And at least Johnny Mac had one final (gigantic) ovation in Seattle… I’ll miss him and Aaron.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOo
Why couldn’t it be hill for Johnson :(
Can we start the Gose watch yet?
Seems like a “get a draft pick/save money” move to me. Johnson is probably more likely then Hill to decline arbitration and if he accepts arbitration he’s more likely to get a smaller raise in arbitration.
Funny thought… both decline arbitration and resign with the original team: Both teams collect a supp pick in exchange for… nothing.
Crazy like an AA

I liked both and will miss them.
Johnny Mac for his amazing D but not in the OF… oh sweet zombie jeebus I don’t want to remember that. Aaron for when he used to hit and his decent D.
Also, when AA really likes a guy, he’ll do what he needs to do to get him.
When Johnny Mac retires, I hope he returns to Toronto as an IF instructor.

is this the best AA could do??
i promised my son a johnny mac autograph :(((((
I have two
Do you have a young, talented cost controlled player having a down year who's "attitude" has cased problems with an aging player or manager?
Don't worry, I Alex Anthopoulos will take him off your hands, I'll even give you some moderately useful veterans that will "help you make a playoff run".
Can you imagine a playoff team fielding
Johnny Mac at 3B/SS, Aaron Hill at 2B, and Lyle Overbay at 1B?

All the D-Backs need to do is trade for EE
And the 2010 Blue Jays IF is reunited.

Not worth it
Don’t really see the point, Johnson will not make it to type A. I can’t believe we just traded 2 guys for someone hitting .209.
even if Johnson continues to fail at the plate...
…he projects as a type B. If he improves, he’s could make it to A. Hill’s option was going to be declined anyway, but was a risk not to decline arbitration. Johnny Mac as good as said in the news conference he want to come back here and he’s a FA after the season.

Remember when he was traded to Detroit
Then came back in the offseason? The thing is the Jays may not necessarily want him back.
