Jose Bautista and Brett Lawrie Homer: Jays Beat Royals
A small hint to other AL teams, don't get Jose Bautista mad. Luke Hochevar hit Yunel Escobar with a pitch, Yunel wasn't pleased, I'm not thinking it was on purpose, but Jose Bautista made Hochevar pay by taking him deep for a 2 run homer that gave us our first lead and he gave a little stare at the pitcher just to make his point. The Royals tied it again, then Brett Lawrie hit another home run, in the 7th, to give us the lead again. We kept it and won.
Ricky Romero didn't have his best start. He hit Alex Gordon to start off the game. He gave up a run in the 1st, in the 3rd and in the 5th. He pitched 6 innings, gave up 8 hits, 3 earned, 4 walks with 3 strikeouts. He had to battle but he kept it close enough for us to pull out a win.
Jesse Litsch, Casey Janssen and FrankyMcFrankFrank each pitched a scoreless inning of relief. I am likely how our pen is coming around. Jesse got the win, Casey a hold and Frank the save, his 11th.
Jays of the Day are Lawrie (.313 WPA), Francisco (.169), Bautista (.141) and Janssen (.124). I am going to give one to Litsch too, at .090 he was close and his was an important inning. Lind, whose bat has turned so cold gets the Suckage at -.098 for an 0 for 4.
Our batters, as a group, have cooled of late. Only 5 hits today. 2 for Brett.
Tomorrow night the Jays go up against Canadian Jeff Francis (4-14, 4.89). Brett Cecil (4-6, 4.24) starts for the us.
Looks like Colby Rasmus will miss 3 or 4 games his the sore wrist. I'm expecting that Darin Mastroianni will stay up with the team and the Jeroloman will be going back to Vegas tomorrow when Kelly Johnson arrives. But I've been wrong before.

Not to nitpick, I think there’s a spelling mistake. “…I am likely how…” Should be ‘liking’, right?
Awesome game tonight. Let’s hope this offence can get hot again.

AL East
im so sick of the 4th place blue jays playing in the AL East. I realize this is an argument that is often posted, but please do something. The Rays could win 90+ and not make playoffs. Baltimore would win the NL West.

This is incorrect. Baltimore couldn’t win anything.
Do you have a young, talented cost controlled player having a down year who's "attitude" has cased problems with an aging player or manager?
Don't worry, I Alex Anthopoulos will take him off your hands, I'll even give you some moderately useful veterans that will "help you make a playoff run".

even with the line drive rate, I’m not sure if he’s that good of a hitter. yeah he is getting unlucky with the balls hit in play but he is also swinging at bad pitches. At this point, he looks like Thames.

sure but I don’t see him getting back to that level until he shows more plate discipline.
2009: 24.7% Oswing… 43.8 swing%… 7.2 SwStr%
2011: 37.1 Oswing… 51.5 swing … 10.3 SwStr
His Oswing and swing% are an increase from 2010 as well and those are a massive jump from his 09 numbers. He is swinging at too many pitches and especially ones out of the zone.
Eric Thames: 38.6 Oswing%… 52 swing%… 12.3 SwStr%
We talk about Thames needed to improve his plate discipline and stop hacking so much at every pitch. Lind needs to do the same.
by Sniderlover on Aug 24, 2011 11:39 PM EDT up reply actions
simple positive BABIP regression
would result in him being a 3+ win first baseman. his batted ball numbers suggest his BABIP should be around .320, which is substantially higher than it is now
Total Internet points: 10 000
Ehhh I don’t know if you can just look at BABIP and determine where he should be. Maybe he should be there but I am a little bit skeptical.
Lind’s BABIP the past 2 months is very low while his LD% is solid but it’s also very similar to Hill who has has a low BABIP the past 2 months and in general this season while his LD% has still been good.
So I dunno… I’m a bit skeptical.
by Sniderlover on Aug 25, 2011 12:15 AM EDT up reply actions
their batted ball numbers really aren't comparable
Lind has a line drive rate over 4% higher than Hill, and an IFFB rate almost 7% lower. Lind squares up balls about 25% more often than Hill does, and gives up half as many free outs on fly balls.
Total Internet points: 10 000
besides the fact that
Lind’s fly balls are leaving the ballpark well over four times as often as Hill’s, and Lind’s good-but-not-great ISO of .195 (undoubtedly deflated by a lack of doubles falling in for base hits) is 107 points higher than Hill’s putrid .088
Total Internet points: 10 000
Fair enough. But Lind’s best month (June) in which he had a 1.029 OPS but also had his lowest LD% at 18.3 but also had a 10.6% walk rate with a .306 BABIP.
I’m not saying he should hit less line drives and somehow he will hit better but despite hitting tons of line drives, he hasn’t been hitting that well for most of the season with the exception of June.
I just think he needs to be a little more disciplined and started walking more if he wants to get back to that elite level.
Right now, it looks like he is a good but not great hitter with 2009 being an outlier.
by Sniderlover on Aug 25, 2011 12:31 AM EDT up reply actions
a good but not great hitter on a solid contract is fine
I’d be perfectly happy if he hit in tune with his xBABIP; he’d be a 3 win first baseman for $5M
Total Internet points: 10 000
I can deal with streaky. He just seems to me that he forgets what type of hitter he is. I’d like to see him not try to pull the ball all the time. He has much more success up the middle or going the other way. Just my opinion.

I agree.
He’s way more effective when he uses the whole field. Seems like he forgets about taking pitches the other way for a while, then remembers and does it for a game or two, then starts try to pull again.
Pitchers notice and he’s getting killed by pitches off the outside of the plate now. Too pull conscious and can’t wait long enough to drive some of those the other way.

And, yes, my intent was to emphasize his old-ness, as he’s not just getting started anymore. Lind got his cup of coffee five years ago. Five years from now, he’ll but out of the traditional “prime” years for a baseballer. He should be, and needs to be raking now.

Afraid he's regressing? No, he's already regressed.
What I’m worried about is that this is his true talent level. The sad thing is that these past few weeks it seems like making a run at signing Prince Fielder hasn’t sounded like such a crazy idea.

have you guys ever looked at the team stats of the 1954 Athletics?
Some crazy stuff…
The team finished the year with a total WAR of 2.1. Only 2 players on the team had a WAR above 1, Jim Finigan – 3.2 & Billy Shantz 1.1. Worst team ever…
A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings.
WAR numbers back then are questionable
The defensive metrics aren’t very useful if it goes that far back. Even so, thats a pretty damn bad team

It's tough to say 'worst baseball players ever'
Because they made the majors, so they had substantial skill.

Then your understanding of baseball is
severely inhibited. Without a breadth of understanding for how the game developed strategically (I’m not just talking managerial strategy here, I’m talking players’ approaches, including batting, pitching, fielding, positioning, etc.), you will never really have a full appreciation for how the game is played today.

If you want to be willfully ignorant
that’s your prerogative. For someone who is looking for answers to questions about baseball, though, ignoring 120+ years of historical data seems like a pretty bad idea.
"Look at me! I'm Tomokazu Ohka of the Montreal Expos!"
I was pointing out the mere fact that I wasn’t interested in historical baseball. I wasn’t expecting to be called out on “not fully appreciating baseball”. Honestly, you can’t dictate that to anyone else, and if you are, you’re being an ass.

Whoops, that did make me look like an ass
Please, accept this apology. I definitely did not mean to say that you don’t “appreciate the game” the way that folks say "if you just look at numbers you don’t appreciate the game. I meant “appreciate” in the sense of being able to best perceive why certain approaches to the game are most valuable.
As an example, I hear from other people all the time about how no one knew how important OBP and positional adjustments were until recently (specifically after the publication of Moneyball). This is nonsense, spouted by people who’ve obviously never paid any attention to the game before Moneyball was published.
The player (and, more famously, manager) that dex mentioned above, John McGraw (who played in the 1890’s) walked 17% of the time and had an OBP of .466.
Eddie Yost, a third baseman who played in the 40’s and 50’s, was known as “The Walking Man” — he was an atrocious fielder who hit for low average and little power, yet his career spanned almost 2 decades (and he received MVP votes in three separate seasons).
Another Eddie, Stanky, a contemporary of Yost, was a second baseman who had a similar approach to batting and received MVP votes four separate times (even placing 3rd and 7th), although he was never top-10 in batting average or slugging percentage.
A third Eddie, Joost, was a shortstop who also played in the 40’s and 50’s (!), received MVP votes (11th) in a season when he batted .206 / .348 / .330. He developed some power a bit later on, accumulating 23 WAR after the age of 31.
Again, please accept the apology, I was not trying to imply that you don’t enjoy the game as much as anyone else.

And he's what, 24?
He just moved to a different city/country. He’s still developing and getting used to his new surroundings. I say give him some time. Center fielders who can hit even halfway decently don’t grow on trees.
If we’re still having this conversation at this time next year or in the spring of 2013 then I’ll be worried.

This.
Waaaaayyyy too early to worry about Rasmus. He’s obviously got talent but needs adjustment time… new team, new league with unfamiliar pitchers, new country.
Seems like a reserved type too so it will likely take some time for him to feel comfortable.

Yes.
I love Gose’s potential but he needs time to work on his plate discipline. He is young and has time. Marisnick is young too but already seems to have the good eye at the plate and good speed too.
by transmogrifier on Aug 25, 2011 2:07 PM EDT up reply actions
well, Gose is also playing 2 levels higher at the same age. Gose does seem to have a good eye at the plate as he is drawing a tons of walks but struggles to make contact.
Main thing I don't like about him
And Marisnick projects to hit for more power.
Gose has really surprised me though.

I see that one everyday on my walk to the subway
It’s been up for the last couple of weeks.
Hic sunt fortuna dracones
Kyle Drabek
6.2 IP, 8 hits, 1 ER, 3 BB, 2 K’s
Threw 111 pitches, 68 for strikes. 7-5 GO/AO
All of his base hits allowed were singles with the exception of one. He was throwing more strikes tonight. Allowed a walk to his last batter before leaving and one of his other walks came after an 0-2 count.
He needs to get a few more swinging strikes. But overall, a decent start
interesting
good for him

I'm still worried with that outing
He was walking guys, allowing hits, and not striking guys out. Sounds like the same current broken Kyle Drabek.
by CaptainCanuck on Aug 25, 2011 12:17 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions
I think the strikeouts will come when he improves his command and starts locating his pitches where he wants to. Right now, it just seems like he is throwing strikes and pitching to contact.
Obviously the walks are still a issue but at least he’s not walking 4-5 guys we saw when he was up here.
I don’t really care about the hits he gives up or his ERA in PCL.
by Sniderlover on Aug 25, 2011 12:34 AM EDT up reply actions
Exactly.
Baby steps… Drabek’s a young guy that needs to work on focus. That isn’t going to happen overnight. The talent is definitely there and what matters right now is getting him to get the most out of it.

Has 3 days to report. Team was in Washington but he had to go back home to get passport.
I think you'll find I'm universally recognised as a mature and responsible adult.
Twitter is the thing with all the tweets...
Yes
Being in the NL, he wouldn’t bother carrying his passport with him.
Plus, he probably wants to pack some stuff to bring to TO because the Jays are in an extended period where they play without an off day and he won’t be able to go back home for a while.
Yep. This sort of stuff happens.
I think you'll find I'm universally recognised as a mature and responsible adult.
Twitter is the thing with all the tweets...
there was the passport pickup thing
Plus, his team was on the road. Hill and JMac had the benefit of being on a homestand at the time of the trade, so they could go straight home and to the airport.
KJ had to go to Phoenix, and given that he probably didn’t keep a bag packed in the event of a trade, probably needed some time to gather some things, considering the Jays don’t have an off-day until September 12th (woo! for us fans).
And I imagine it might have been impossible to fly in to southern Ontario this evening.

This apparently goes against some sort of universal rule...
That Lind can’t heat up at the same time that Bautista is hot. He only starts hitting when Bautista slumps. I still can’t get my head around it but it sure is frustrating to watch! This is why I am hoping more and more we actually do go out and get Fielder… He will put up numbers consistently instead of us all holding our hats praying for Lindy to get hot and produce…

Anyone know what's happening with Villanueva?
Been a while now, thought his injury situation was minor in nature? He’d be a nice complement back in the Jays’ bullpen, and that would help keep his innings down.
Lawrie's fWAR is now 1.0
And that’s after only 18 games. That puts him into a tie with Thames for 6th place amongst the Jays’s position players. The only players ahead of him are JPA and EE (both with 1.1), Molina (1.5), Escobar (4.2), and Bautista (7.7). I know the kid has to come down to Earth eventually (or does he…?), but holy crap, these last few weeks sure have been fun to watch!
