Words You Never Thought You'd Hear: Tallet in to Close. It Went Exactly How You Would Imagine It Would.
I really can't talk about it. You go the whole game trying to win. You get a 1 run lead going into the bottom of the 10th AND YOU BRING IN BRIAN TALLET. Why not just beat me with a bat instead.
And you stand there while he shows he can't get anyone out, unless they are dumb enough to try to bunt. Why you would try to bunt with Tallet pitching I'll never know.
I really just can't believe. I've never seen a game managed that badly before and I lived through Buck Martinez as manager.
We released Trever Miller and Wil Ledezma, and neither of them were as bad as Tallet.

You know it's a bad night in BlueJayville when "Tallet" is trending worldwide.
There is no excuse for this. I know Frank hasn’t been great on back-to-backs, but my god.
AA has made some unreal moves, but letting Tallet back in the Jays clubhouse almost undoes it all.

I'm crying right now
And I can’t tell whether its from laughing so hard, or being so sad
Funny how you were able to use the picture from Sept. 13, 2010
At least that time he was on his third inning which was pretty dumb too with all the Sept. callups.
Get well soon, Farrell.
That’s an order, not just well wishing.
Not really, but… please come back, Farrell!
Can’t they let him manage over Skype or something?
The man in the white shirt.
Tom you have entertained me
something Tallet did in a close situation, uh. That was miserable. And to think Fransisco was physically able.
Do you have a young, talented cost controlled player having a down year who's "attitude" has cased problems with an aging player or manager?
Don't worry, I Alex Anthopoulos will take him off your hands, I'll even give you some moderately useful veterans that will "help you make a playoff run".
The most hyperbole ever!

Oh well
They lost a meaningless game. As long as the young guys do well, all fine with me.
I keep trying to remind myself of that...
It’s hard to think that way on nights like this though

And what games aren't meaningless for "your Toronto Blue Jays"?
Funny thing, I haven’t heard about any sign stealing lately… I guess the white shirt guy had a crisis of conscience or something. Oh yeah, maybe it’s because the Yankees and Red Sox have forgotten we exist again. Ah well, soon it will be time for Leafs Mediocrity! Wooo Toronto!

Sorry but,
That is just an idiotic statement “they lost another meaningless game”. They ALL mean something, or they wouldn’t be playing the damn games.

crying inside....not a little, but a lot
when I saw Tallet was off the dl im like…..oh…..if i need they were gonna bring him in for the 10th i would have yelled NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!
I was at work during the game and it was on one of the TV’s….
When I saw Tallet warming up I walked over to my buddy and was like “dude, Brian Tallet is warming up…. BRIAN TALLET”. We both laughed at the absurdity of it, neither of us could understand why anyone could possibly think that bringing out Tallet in a closing situation would ever be a good idea.
Why was it that Wakamatsu got fired in Seattle?
Did he say why Tallet was chosen? In anycase I was more upset at the bases loaded, nobody out and the nada. Cecil as well has regressed this year and his porkiness contributed to the fielding play and errant throw to first. Not nice at all…a winnable game before the 10th.
Pretty sure the bad throw was because he made a terrible off balance throw…nothing to do with his weight.
Clear eyes, full hearts, can't lose.
Litsch is pretty fat and he's a really good fielder

Sometimes even the best teams
come up empty with the bases loaded.
However, it cannot be said that “sometimes even the best managers put in their worst reliever with a one run lead in the 10th to face multiple righthanded batters when other options are available”.
But I’ll let you choose which one to get more upset about.

If we keep mysteriously throwing away wins and get protected pick...
And we don’t sign a Type A Superstar (not named KJ)… then I’m going to turn in my AA Superfan ID card, codebook, white shirt, and AA jersey (which cost a fortune with all those letters)…
Not really, I love pretty much all of his moves so far, but Prince would be the icing on the cake.

Sometimes I wonder how much a missed strike here or there can change things
Tallet didn’t deserve to get the save. He doesn’t deserve to pitch in the majors, quite frankly.
But the 2-1 pitch to Reynolds that was called a ball was 6 inches more over the plate than the previous pitch which was a strike. That’s terrible umpiring. And 2-2 is a much different count than 3-1. Maybe you get Reynolds out instead of walking him… maybe everything is differ… no, it’s Tallet.
Disregard post.

We got Tallet out there
We got Dewayne back in our lineup.
All we need to do is replace Bautista with Juan Rivera
and Thames with Corey Patterson
And that shoould just about do it.
At this point – I have absolutely no idea what the Jays are doing.
Absolutely none.
Very very disheartening to watch this train wreck.
Totally agreed with bringing Tallet in.
Then again I just got home and am kinda drunk and I get psyched things in these situations……
JaysDynasty was definitely on to something with Manute Bol

Tallet is not suckage
Since April 2010, Tallet has had 35 appearances with the Jays. He average WPA per game is -.063, so not fully suckage (yet). Only 13 of his 35 appearances have a positive WPA.
In his career, Tallet has had 38 games where he had a WPA at or below -.100 WPA. This game, at -.799 was by far his worst game, probably because there is no reason to put him in such high leverage situations, ever.
@BBBMinorLeaguer
meh
draft position more important arguably. we’re not playing for anything this year anyways. i guess you should always try to put the best team out there for the fans but hey, the hawks, penguins, oilers all bottomed out and now look at their rosters… let’s just hope the jays dont draft like the leafs !

Even more important than draft position
Is getting a protected first round pick.
And even more important than the protected first round pick, I had predicted the Jays would win 78-81 games this year.

Whos filling in at manager while Farrell is out?
I haven’t been able to watch these games
This was as obvious as it could be...
I’m used to AA doing things more sneakily.
Protected draft pick + Pujols/Fielder FTW!
Before we hold that torch to burn Tallet at the stake
Let’s not forget that he wouldn’t have had to pitch had our batters, other than Lawrie, been able to push anyone across the plate last night, and it was only a wild pitch that got us the lead in the 10th. 2 for 14 with RISP is atrocious, and loading the bases and coming away with nothing is just inexcusable. Regardless of WPA, the hitters own this loss as much as Tallet does.
Most definitely, this is a team loss
There were so many scoring changes that were wasted

by Minor Leaguer on Aug 31, 2011 9:07 AM EDT up reply actions
Really?
Perhaps there was a few scoring chances scuffled, but the hitters rallied to tie the game up. You can’t bash the hitters after they take the lead in the top of the ninth, they came through. It was the bullpen that blew the save, not our batters. You need to give credit where credit is due, and assign the blame where it should be. It is totally lame to suggest its a team sport so it isn’t the pitchers fault for blowing the save. Tallet sucks, end of story. I wish we would outright him as soon as possible, in fact.
by TrueBlue4Ever! on Aug 31, 2011 9:34 AM EDT up reply actions
This game should have never been tied
The Jays should have mashed the Orioles this game with all the mistakes the O’s made. Jays had 2 on 1 out in the 3rd and 4th, no run; bases loaded in the 5th, no run; Encarnacion getting out once with two on, then twice with the bases loaded. Gifts from the Orioles included: dropped popfly by Wieters, a Kevin Gregg meltdown, free “double steal” in the 9th, wild pitch to score the go-ahead run… any others?
The one solace is that this game was as ugly for the O’s as it was for the Jays. But they won.

Fair enough,
Although i reserve SOME blame for Tallet, mostly my venom is directed at Waka. YOu are correct that it wasn’t the right call to put tallet in. This is now completely obvious in retrospect. Very frustrating loss – hopefully the Boys in Blue can bounce back tonight and make Jo Jo Reyes cry on the mound due to the plentiful home runs our guys will be crushing… Gotta stay positive here…

Looking at the roster now
If Litsch and Francisco weren’t available, that takes the options down to Tallet, Lewis, and Mike McCoy. Joking aside, I likely would choose Tallet out of those three.
So the blame has to be shared around: the batters who couldn’t get a bigger margin of victory, and the starters who can’t get past the sixth in game after game, putting a heavy workload on a shallow bullpen.

Checking the boxscore...
I haven’t had much time to come on BBB in the last month (moving, travel, b-school starting, etc.), but I check the boxscores (and game recaps: thanks for these!!) and when I clicked on last night’s to see that TALLET got the loss, I had to make sure I had clicked on the right YEAR. My first inclination was that I had honestly somehow ended up in the 2010 boxscores.

Need a bad outing before a DFA
and we got it! Welcome back Rauch & Carlos V. We have lots of room in the bullpen for you
As a Jays fan, I think i speak for us all when i say
How completely depressing it is to see Tallet back . His performance last night, even though it was his first pitching appearance since July 3 (so realistically he should NOT have been put into that situation) was pretty much par for the course for Tallet, who has never registered a save before, yet Waka felt he was the guy to go to…
Why wouldn’t they have Tallet pitch the inning Carreno pitched and have Carreno close it out? Talk about mis-using your pitchers. Get well soon, Farrell.
C'mon Tom, Tallet is worse than Trever Miller and Wil Ledezma?
I know Tallet’s reputation in Toronto suffered when Cito made him a starter in ‘09 but his relief numbers in Toronto were decent. Wil Ledezma is a AAAA pitcher and Trever Miller’s only value used to come in being a LOOGY and he doesn’t even do that well anymore. Tallet’s also been hurt a good chunk of this season. I would take Tallet over Ledezma or Miller anyday. It’s not his fault that he gets mishandled by Toronto managers.
As for Wakamatsu’s reasoning in having Tallet close, how about the fact that the bullpen has been used hard for the last few games. I think the whole pen is gassed since Alvarez, Perez, Morrow and Cecil have not been able to go more than 6 innings recently. Do you want to blow out the arms of Litsch, Janssen, Carreno, etc. just to win a couple of meaningless games near the end of the season?
Hic sunt fortuna dracones
Nobody wants any blown out arms, of course...
But would i put in Rommie Lewis over Tallet – Yes. If only for the fact that Tallet HADN’T PITCHED SINCE JULY 3 – clearly anyone would have been better in that high-leverage situation than Tallet. And FYI having a reliever pitch more then one consecutive inning isn’t going to blow their arm out. These guys aren’t puff-puffs you know, they actually train and work hard every day to do what they do. Bottom line was that Tallet should NOT have been pitching.
by TrueBlue4Ever! on Aug 31, 2011 10:24 AM EDT up reply actions
Tallet has had reverse splits for most of his career
He has done better against RHBs because of his changeup. Lewis at best is a LOOGY and really has not proven that he can pitch at the Major league level. If I’m facing a bunch of RHBs and my only bullpen options are Tallet and Lewis, then I’ll take Tallet.
As for relievers working multiple innings, it looks like Janssen may be having shoulder troubles again:
You have to be careful with relievers sometimes, especially guys with injury histories like Janssen and Litsch.
Hic sunt fortuna dracones
Not to mention if the game went beyond the 10th Waka could’ve had Rommie pitch multiple innings while Tallet was probably limited to one.

Good point Wiz
Wakamatsu didn’t have a lot to work with last night.

I'm feeling nostalgic
Jeez, amid all the moaning about the loss, did no one appreciate a game that featured blown saves by both Brian Tallet and Kevin Gregg? We might have a hangover this morning, but we got to party like it was 2010…
Tao has a writeup on the Tallet situation last night that I think is pretty spot on.
Clear eyes, full hearts, can't lose.
