Who will the Jays Call Up for September?
Major League rosters expand tomorrow, so who do you think the Jays will call up?
Jon Rauch and Carlos Villanueva will be activated off the DL so that will give us 27 on the active roster though Brian Tallet could be released very easily. Beyond that?
Dustin McGowan: McGowan is to start tonight for New Hampshire and he is up to 75 pitches a start so he could be called up for next week, but then the Fisher Cats have 5 more regular season games after tonight so they could leave him there to make one more start. And, after that, they are in the playoffs, I wonder if the Jays would leave him there to make a playoff start? I do think they would want to bring him to Toronto at some point, but it might not be until the middle of the month.
Kyle Drabek: Doubt it. I think when the Vegas season ends they'll let him go home and forget about baseball for a bit.
Brad Mills: Doubt it. He has thrown 160+ innings this year, I think they'll rest his arm, unless they feel like they need an extra arm in the bullpen.
P.J. Walters: Doubt it. He's been hit really hard in his 6 starts in Vegas. He has a 9.13 ERA.
Danny Farquhar: Doubt it. He's been really good in Vegas but they would have to add him to the 40-man roster and burn an option to do it.
David Cooper: I think so. He'd give us a bat off the bench and let EE or Lind sit occasionally. They might wait until the 51's season ends on September 5.
Adeiny Hechavarria: Maybe. Unless they want him to rest a bit before the Arizona Fall League starts, I don't see any reason why not. It wouldn't cost them anything. It would be nice to see him.
Darin Mastroianni: I think so. I don't see why not, if nothing else you'd have a pinch-runner on the bench.
Moises Sierra: Doubt it. He is on the 40-man roster so it wouldn't cost anything but he didn't have an amazing season at New Hamshire and they have playoffs coming. They'll leave him there.
Adam Loewen: Maybe. I'd really like them to take a look at him, but they would have to add him to the 40-man (if they activate Dustin McGowan they would have 1 spot left) and he is out of options. Once they put him on the 40-man they can't send him back to the minors without him clearing waivers. But then he could leave the team, this winter, if he wanted to, he is a free agent after the season. If another team wanted him, they could have him either way. Sooner or later they either have to give him a shot or let him go.
Anyone else you'd like to see the Jays call up?

I wonder if Hechavarria will actually be sent back to New Hampshire for the playoff run before the fall league starts up. I don’t think he would get much playing time with the Jays if they called him up, and it would be nice to see him go back and continue hitting with the Fisher Cats considering he didn’t really light it up in double AA.

Even if he joined NH for the playoffs he could still join the Jays, no?
Didn’t Drabek join the Jays last September after playing postseason for Las Vegas? If Hech were called up he’d still get a chance to rest up for the AFL. I see it as similar to Arencibia’s call up last year. Just a chance to get into a couple of games, otherwise soak up soem MLB atmosphere and look and learn.

drabek never pitched for LVG last year

Nope
But he and Zack Stewart threw two gems against Trenton in the postseason for the Fisher Cats.

Leave him to keep working with Chad Mottola..
Hes done well there, let him stay there.
Not changing my signature until Hechavarria is promoted to the big leagues.

Arms are typically left in AA while they develop
There are a number of good arms in AA right now (remembering that Alvarez has already been called up and Stewart was traded but called up this year from AA):
Deck McGuire, Dustin McGowan, Drew Hutchinson, Chad Jenkins, and Nestor Molina
Other than McGowan, none of those pitchers is likely to get called up because they are hitting their inning ceilings / are injured / not on 40-man roster / are going to play in the playoffs in NH this year.
AAA in the PCL is just not a good place for pitchers to develop (for the most part, though there are things they can learn there). It seems to be a holding ground for pitchers that are done with minor league development but aren’t cutting it in the majors, or AAAA players to fill out the team / pitch in with the ML club when there is an injury.

Perez and Lewis have already made that jump, and Drabek, Mills, and Ledezma had a look already.

I wouldn't mind Chad Beck
Going by your interview with Marty Brown, he seems interesting. Maybe he could be a candidate to compete for the bp next year. Could DFA Tallet for him imo. I’m also in favour of seeing Adam Loewen getting a call (couldn’t possibly any worse offensively than Wise or Teahen), and possibly Farquhar (same reason as Beck).
I echo the Beck call up and DFA Tallet. I’d also like to see Farquhar, Mastroianni and Loewen(release Wise,Teahen and Lewis)
Teahen is signed through 2012 ($5.5 million next year)
I wouldn’t release him…

I would like to see Nestor Molina
Any chances he gets the call?

No options would be burnt because he won’t be sent down to the minors, but service clock will start ticking.
@BBBMinorLeaguer
he is in the minor
If he goes on the 40-man this season it burns an option
I blog, therefore I am.

No
you only burn an option if you send them back down. If they are put onto the 40 man and the active at the same time they don’t burn an option, but he would burn one if he doesn’t make the team out of camp next year or is taken of the active roster during September.
Do you have a young, talented cost controlled player having a down year who's "attitude" has cased problems with an aging player or manager?
Don't worry, I Alex Anthopoulos will take him off your hands, I'll even give you some moderately useful veterans that will "help you make a playoff run".
Yep...
There are no optional assignments in September since the 40-man roster is the active roster.

In other former prospect news
Zach Stewart’s line from last night
4.2 IP, 7H, 6ER, 1 HR, 2BB, 3k
I know he’s young and its too early too judge, but I’m glad he’s not tearing it up with the Sox
I am kind of excited to see Cooper again. I don’t expect him to be great but I do like his approach (61BB/40K in 114 games). He might have a hard time getting playing time though.
Kyle Drabek: Doubt it. I think when the Vegas season ends they’ll let him go home and forget about baseball for a bit.
In my opinion, I would call him up just to work with the coaches everyday and work on his mechanics. He doesn’t have to pitch but if he can improve his mechanics, it will help him for next season
Can’t wait to see McGowan as well.
Beyond that, I’d like to see Farquhar. And I’d like to see Cooper get some at bats. I also think Hechavarria will be called up.
Maybe Mastro and Loewen will get called up as well, but really I don’t see very much of a benefit in doing so. It doesn’t hurt I suppose, but it doesn’t look as though they’re in the plans, longer term.
I think Hechavarria is a very real possibility as he is on a major league contract
so he’s already burned 2 options. Time really does begin to run out with him if we can’t get him up here some time next year. At the age he got the contract I think he has 3 options to start with, am I right, or is it 4?

Hech has 4 option years
The rule is that a player gets 4 option years if he does not have 5 seasons of at least 90 active days on a professional roster by the end of the 3rd option year, which Hech won’t.

I think…
McGowan, Farquhar, Hechavarria, Beck, A random lefty (Henn or Mills probably) to work out of the Pen, Cooper, and Drabek.
I wouldn’t expect Drabek to get into any games but I think they’ll want him practicing until the year is over, I think they’ll want to have a look at Hechavarria so they can guage how close to MLB ready he is before they have to make a decision on Kelly Johnson.
I don’t think Hechavarria has any impact on what the Jays will do with Johnson. At the very least he will be offered arbitration and then it is up to Johnson to figure out what he wants. Make no mistake that Hechavarria is on the Jays radar, but Johnson will be in play this off season one way or another.
AA has been on record several times saying that Hechavarria will be in Las Vegas next year. So even if the Jays do sign Johnson to a multi-year contract, it would be a good problem for the Jays to have.

I agree with Tom
I think McGowan and Cooper for sure. Probably Hech and Loewen. I think they’ll want Drabek just to forget about baseball for a few months. They could bring up Sierra or Mastro, but I don’t see them bringing up either of them. They didn’t exactly show they are ready yet. I think Loewen for sure because either we keep him on the roster next year, we lose him in December or we lose him in March. Might as well take a look at him.

Whelp
.@Blue jays have activated Carlos Villanueva and have designated Brian Tallet for assignment.
Ball.
Anthony Gose
I would love to see Anthony Gose get a shot. Particulary with the injury of Rasmus. Don’t expect it to happen thu. He’s not even on the 40man is he?
Syndergaard>Clemons
Votto will be a Jay by 2014
Almost forgot
Very excited to see Loewen as well. Hope he can impress enough so he can get a chance to play next year some were else. As I don’t see a future for him here.

How about Sean Henn?
I know he’s 30, but the bullpen could use some help and he’s got good numbers in the PCL.
There has been a little consideration
for bringing Drabek up.
The thought was to get him up with the major league coaches again.
To give him something positive to end a very trying season for him.
