Poll: Where does Moneyball fall on the nerd continuum?

You may have noticed that the banner ads atop some of the SBNation blogs, including Bluebird Banter, are carrying an advertisement for the upcoming Moneyball film. I am seriously considering attending the opening night of this film, and I imagine many baseball/SABR fans are doing the same.

Lining up for a film opening, sometimes for several hours or even days, is seen as the height of nerd-dom. Traditionally, this behaviour has been most prominent among fans of sci-fi/fantasy franchises like Star Wars, Star Trek, and Lord of the Rings.

However, might it not be even nerdier to get overly excited about the opening of a film that does not conform to this archetype? At least if you line up for the new LOTR film, there is a sizeable group of like-minded fans who are doing the same thing as you. With Moneyball, you may leave yourself as the sole object of ridicule.

I have been trying to figure out what the nerdiest film is to line up for, but I couldn't come up with an answer myself. So I have decided to polll my fellow BBBers.

I actually saw the pre-screening of Moneyball last night

I’m not a big fan of giving (or receiving) reviews about a movie, but in terms of nerdiness, I don’t think its that nerdy to see a movie on its opening day. Moneyball’s probably not a movie your going to need to line up for.

2011 Jays slogan should be "Power and Speed", not just "Hustle and Heart".

They shouldn't of had brad pitt do the lead imo, it'll change the perception of the film to people who don't know what its about

then people will say it’s shit cause it’s not what they were expecting. I guarantee that I will see it opening night though

people see brad pitt and expect an international-scaled bank heist

and are also confused as to why Edward Norton is not also cast in the movie as Billy Beane

Also why does Billy Beane seem to be getting younger as the years go on!!

I don't know about that.

Brad Pitt will bring in all sorts of people who wouldn’t have seen the movie otherwise. Might be a little boost for baseball – maybe spark some interest.

My girlfriend has been to every one on opening night. At least she has priorities?

Brad Pitt means you can bring your girlfriend to the movie

Nerdiness is lost.

Lord of the Rings and Star Wars are generational classics, so that rules that out. Plus they’re awesome.

Star Trek on the other hand…

How is Star Trek not a generational classic?

It spanned more generations than Star Wars. They even had a movie called Generations!

by neilrqm on Sep 1, 2011 8:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Star Trek's been beaten to death

There were five series and 10 movies before they rebooted it a couple of years ago, and even then it wasn’t a gigantic box office smash on the level of LOTR or Star Wars. For all the prequels stank, there was enough pent-up demand after 16 years that people wanted to see new Star Wars movies.

Not sure how nerdy Moneyball can be, it’s not a sci-fi or fantasy movie where you can dress up like a hobbit or a stormtrooper or Klingon. That would seem to be an essential nerd marker.

by Goldenhawk99 on Sep 1, 2011 8:44 PM EDT up reply actions

You could dress up as Billy Beane.

BTW CBS is currently in talks for a sixth Star Trek series.

I'll dress up as JP Riccardi

It’ll be extra nerdy since he’s an extra character that’s not even in the movie!

I'm a Star Wars guy

So it was a joke, its obviously a generational classic. haha

Should have had the sarcasm tag.

I don't view nerdiness as negative in the least, but to me Moneyball is the nerdiest by far

because being a baseball fan is already kind of nerdy, and Moneyball is only appealing to a relatively small subset of baseball fans that are far nerdier than the usual fan. Additionally, I’m sure all of the demographics for these films skew male (not that nerdiness is inherently masculine), but I’d guess that Moneyball even more so than the others. Additionally, all of the other film series have had huge box office “four quadrant” hits, showing plenty of mainstream appeal, and I doubt Moneyball will do anything like that at the box office.

that said, there are far more nerdy films than Moneyball.
