Jon Rauch Done for 2011

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 12, 2011

TORONTO, ONTARIO

BLUE JAYS RHP JON RAUCH DONE FOR THE SEASON

The TORONTO BLUE JAYS have placed RHP JON RAUCH on the 15-day disabled list with right knee cartilage tear, retroactive to September 5th.

RAUCH, 32, is 5-4 with 11 saves with an ERA of 4.85 in 53 games this season, his first with the Blue Jays.  The 6-10, 250 lb. right-handed pitcher will visit knee specialist Dr. Richard Steadman in Vail, Colorado to be evaluated early next week.  Should Dr. Steadman confirm the Blue Jays medical staff recommendation of surgery, he will perform the procedure at that time.  The recovery time should be six to eight weeks which will allow for full recovery prior to the 2012 spring training season.

What would you all do with him this offseason?

Rauch seems like the 2011 version of Kevin Gregg. Needs to get up 0-1 with a high ’80’s outside fastball, and if the location is off, batters seem to tee off. No need to waste a roster spot with such a marginal reliever.

Fare thee well.

Unless there was a handshake deal on arbitration, you decline to offer arbitration and wish him well.

by gabrielsyme on Sep 12, 2011 5:30 PM EDT reply actions

If it is obvious that we won’t offer arbitration the Jays can make a deal to offer arbitration and have him decline, since unlike in Type ‘A’ situations it won’t have an effect on his free agent value.

perfect

He’ll be undervalued this offseason. Does he have an option? If so, decline him and lowball him. I’d be happy with having him back for $2 M

He has a $3.75 million club option, $250k buyout

If I was GM I would decline his option, then bring him back on a cheap deal. He is a Type B, so if there’s a gentlemen’s agreement that he would decline, I’d offer him arbitration then let him go. But what are the chances are that a reliever coming off of a poor year and a knee injury would decline arbitration?

If we don’t offer him arbitration he gets no benefit (unlike Type A’s). If we offer him something to decline he receives a benefit.

by JaysSaskatchewan on Sep 12, 2011 5:58 PM EDT up reply actions

While that's all well and good,

when have you “offered” him enough to decline? He won’t likely get a downgrade in pay through arbitration and I can’t imagine anyone paying more than 1.5 M or so. I don’t know that it’s worth it to offer him $2M just to get the pick. And what if he changes his mind? Then we’re bringing him back for $3.75M and we don’t get a pick . . .

What I’m saying is that if we don’t offer arbitration he gets nothing. At this point it is pretty obvious that we won’t offer arbitration. So in comparison to ‘nothing’ even a bag of baseballs would be better.

by JaysSaskatchewan on Sep 12, 2011 6:11 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree

but if we offer him a bag of baseballs to decline arbitration and then we offer him arbitration, what’s to prevent him from saying, “Welp, your mistake!” and accepting arbitration, leaving us on the hook?

I guess we could immediately cut him and only owe him one month’s salary, but I don’t think the players’ union would let us get away with something like that.

"Look at me! I'm Tomokazu Ohka of the Montreal Expos!"

by jessef on Sep 12, 2011 6:18 PM EDT up reply actions

That could happen too. I think the agent would have to be involved though. Anything like that could make it difficult for the agent to make similar deals in the future. Are there many instances in the past of players rejecting arbitration when normally it would have been in their best interest to accept?

by JaysSaskatchewan on Sep 12, 2011 6:25 PM EDT up reply actions

"Look at me! I'm Tomokazu Ohka of the Montreal Expos!"

Its not so much the agent but the union.

They go bug-eyed (no rauch pun intended) at any side deal/home discount arrangement which impacts on the lowering of remunerations.

by Bendit on Sep 13, 2011 9:31 AM EDT up reply actions

I think there have

been instances in which a team with a good relationship with a player found out in advance whether the player would accept arbitration if offered, but I can’t think of an example where they reached an agreement for the player to decline when he otherwise would have accepted.

consistently since he came on board iwth the Jays. Signing Pujols or a star-calibre player like him is just part of AA’s evolution as a GM. Maybe he’ll do it by trade but we still need pitching, hence my follow up post down below.

Why 10 years?

I’m sure that numbers and years can be worked out on better scales than that of 10 years. A-Rod’s deal was different, Pujols can only do a deal like that with the Cardinals, the team he has played for his entire career. You can’t imagine he is going to work a MLB sponsored legacy deal like A-Rod with any other team than the Cards. Since we are envisioning Pujols with the Jays, for the sake of that alone we don’t need to suggest Pujols would ONLY sign for a 10 year contract. Such contracts are unheard of, anyways.

i think 6-8 year contract offers will be made for Pujols but the compensation for this shortened contract will be IMMENSE to say the least. Pujols is freakin’ awesome and his record backs him up. You gotta figure a team is going to end up departing with at least 180 million over 7 years for him. That is likely a reasonable window of what he is going to sign for, give or take 10 million and 1 or 2 years on the contract.

by TrueBlue4Ever! on Sep 12, 2011 6:38 PM EDT up reply actions

The cards already offered an 8 year deal to Pujols, and he rejected it, supposedly

Maybe he wants out of St. Louis....A change of scenery is always nice no matter who you are!

My guess, Pujols will sign for probably a 7 yr/180-185. It could also be 8 years and 200 million.

About Pujols, he is a bonafide Future Hall of Famer, I think AA has to go after Pujols if he hits the market, I honestly don’t see him passing by an opportunity to acquire such a player. Players like Pujols come by once or twice in a generation. With that said, his last decade wasn’t as good as Alex Rodriguez’s. He won’t be able to command that automatic 10 year contract the way some people are playing it… well, he probably could with Washington , but i don’t see it happening.

by TrueBlue4Ever! on Sep 12, 2011 6:54 PM EDT up reply actions

pujols won't sign for under 200...

why would he reject the 210 (supposedly) deal st louis offered?

Players like Pujols come by once or twice in a generation, sure. but he’s also 31 (or more, who knows). Now is not the ideal time to throw truckloads of money for him

that's partially true

but Wilson has spent most of his career as a reliever (not that they don’t go downhill in their early 30’s either, but I’d think there’s a different reason for that — essentially, they were never as good in the first place) so he’s only got 700 major league innings on his arm. Even including his minor league career (400 ip), we’re still only looking at a total of 1100 innings, so I’d think he might be a better bet to pitch fairly well over a medium term (say, 4 yr) deal than you’d think just by looking at his age.

I’m not endorsing the team signing or passing on him, just pointing out some relevant information for those who are arguing for or against him.

good points

Wilson’s arm may have more left in it than other pitcher’s his age. I don’t care for str8edgeracer (his twitter handle) personally. I’ve heard that his own teammates don’t like him because of his arrogant personality. Judging by his twitter account postings, I can see where that comes from.

I also have doubts about how he would do against the Yanks and Red Sox (for that matter, the O’s or Rays too) on a regular basis. Facing the Angels, A’s and Mariners is one thing, the AL East is another.

I didn't like the Rauch signing to begin with

but after the Kevin Gregg (another move I didn’t like) thing worked out, I was okay with it. But Gregg had good K rates and slight flyball tendencies. Rauch is a “closer” with awful groundball numbers and who doesn’t strike people out. I’m sure he won’t continue to give up almost 2 home runs per 9 innings, but with his weak stuff and flyball tendencies, he’ll give up plenty, particularly in the AL East. I don’t particularly want to take a chance he comes back.

ok

1) no mindless violence. I’m looking at you football and hockey. Who wants to watch subpar guys play because one of the league’s premier talents got concussed?

2) no clock. The game, as Yogi Berra said, “ain’t over til it’s over”.

3) the stats. Whether you’re an old school RBIs and pitcher wins kind of person or you like the latest advanced statistic from Fangraphs, baseball attracts the type of person that likes and will use numbers to advance their argument about which player is better rather than just relying on “he’s gritty!” Even the people who like David Eckstein will cite his batting average rather than just saying he’s a scrappy gamer.

there exist lots of advanced stats

for other sports too, but I do know what you’re getting at

by benk on Sep 13, 2011 10:18 AM EDT up reply actions

I think your 2) is overrated.

Does a team really have a chance of coming back when its 10-1 in the ninth, just because there’s no clock? Theoretically, yes. Practically, no.

by Defense Counts! on Sep 13, 2011 5:39 PM EDT up reply actions

but that's the extreme case

in football if a team is ahead they start trying to run out the clock when there’s like 1/4 of the game still to go, even if the score is relatively close

1) Pacing. You can read a book while you watch and not miss anything important.

2) Consistency. You don’t have to check the standings every day, or even every year; the Yankees and Red Sox are still out in front.

3) History. No matter how amazing a feat is (e.g. losing a no-hitter or turning an unassisted triple play or pitching an entire season without inducing a double play) it’s all been done before.

please read this with a sense of playfulness

I'll play

1) No sport where 1 guy can beat 9/10.
2) I love the hitter/pitcher matchups. It seems insane to non-math folks, but I enjoy them despite SSS.
3) Nothing like a pennant race (haven’t felt that in almost 9 years… hey the Jays were sort of close a couple of years during the Carlos Delgado era but not that close.)

1) Cheapest of the 4 per game to go to
2) So many stats to talk about and calculate and be nerdy with
3) I can actually play baseball.

1. The pace of baseball is perfect for summer, relaxing with moments of extreme tension and then release. A great game is similar to a great piece of music.

2. Not nearly as lame as basketball and (particularly) football in the incessant marketeering. I hate being marketed to.

3. I like the day-in, day-out aspect of baseball. You can’t just tune in once a week.

A bonus reason 4. Years of toiling in the minor leagues tends to breed a certain discipline and humbleness in most (certainly not all) players, which is nice to see in professional athletes. Top prospects may be destined for greatness, but they still have to spend years playing in front of a few thousand people. The NCAA means that top football and basketball players are thrown into a huge spotlight right out of high school.

by benk on Sep 13, 2011 2:27 PM EDT up reply actions

1. There probably isn’t any other sport where a guy can be successful 4/10 times and be considered tremendous..(in terms of OBP)
2. A very long season, your able to watch a game almost every day in the summer, I love it!
3. Players can be drafted out of highschool (I use to watch hockey a lot, then I started watching baseball, last year I found out players in highschool could be drafted, I was amazed, like imagine that…if I was super good at baseball, I could be drafted in 3 years..or if I was Dominican or from somewhere in South America, I could be signed next year like Roberto Ozuna)

1) What about scoring percentage among NHL snipers?

I don’t have the stats in front of me, but I believe it’s less than 30% for the best scorers.

by Defense Counts! on Sep 13, 2011 5:42 PM EDT up reply actions

This is what I was thinking of too.

It’s definitely lower than 30%. I think it’s more like ~15%

by Nadia on Sep 13, 2011 5:45 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

It should be a bigger deal, when it comes to importance to the game.

A goal in hockey is (usually) more important to the outcome of the game than a walk in baseball.
