well, i'd think you'd have to use the same relievers'
other performances as the control, wouldn’t you?
Of course, you’re selecting for appearances against what may be struggling offences in your treatment group but otherwise you’re comparing performances by different relievers
I guess the best way to do it would be to compare the differences in performance between the two different groups of relievers.
This study just went from being reasonable to being a colossal pain in the rear.

I was thinking more along the lines of using bins rather than individuals.
I suppose using hard throwing reliever following non-hard throwing starters as the control group makes sense though. My thinking was just that the number of batters faced (which should probably be the metric for determining which RP to include instead of IP or appearances) post-hard-thrower and post-soft-thrower will be low enough for most individual relievers that you’ll get a ton of noise.
Moral of the story: We have to get really good at MATLAB (or have a ton of patience for excel – which I do, but not that much)
