Minor League Recap: Last Games of Regular Season

3 teams finished their regular season, Vancouver started their playoffs.

Las Vegas 10 Salt Lake 2

The 51's end their season with a win. They finished 71-73, good for 2nd in their division but 17 games back of Sacramento.

Brad Mill: 6.2, 6 hits, 2 earned, 2 walks, 6 k. Win. 11-9, 4.00. He led the team in wins, strikeouts 136 and most every other pitching category.

Winston Abreu: 1.0, 1 hit, 1 BB, 1 k. 3.66.

Darin Mastroianni: 4 for 5. Finished with a.276/.358/.389 line at Vegas. 20 of 27 in base stealing. He had 14 more steals at New Hampshire. Not a great season for Darin.

Adeiny Hechavarria: 2 for 5, triple. .389/.431/.537 in 25 games at Vegas. .235/.275/.347 in 111 games at New Hampshire. I wondered why he was moved up but it worked out for him. In total 20 for 33 as a base stealer.

David Cooper: 1 for 3, walk. .364/.439/.535. Led the team in BA, RBI (96), OBP, SLG and likely a lot of other things. A really good season for Cooper.

Adam Loewen: 0 for 3, walk. .306/.377/.508. Second on the team in HR with 17 (Lawrie had 18). Slumped in August, maybe playing in that heat didn't help.

Ryan Shealy: 1 for 3, HR, walk. .272/.373/.478 in 62 games.

Ricardo Nanita: 2 for 3, walk. .363/.416/.554 in 51 games for the 51's. .299/.341/.408 in 58 games for the Fisher Cats. 30 years old, not a prospect.

Manny Mayorson: 3 for 3, 2 doubles, walk. .313/.371/.394 in 97 games.

Star-divide

New Hampshire 8 Portland 3

Finished 77-65, first in their division. Playoffs start Wednesday.

Yohan Pino: 6.0, 4 hits, 2 earned, 0 BB, 7 k. Win. 4-8, 4.08.

Deck McGuire: 2.0, 1 hit, 3 k. 2-1,  4.35 for New Hampshire. 7-4, 2.75 in Dunedin.

Ronald Uviedo: 1.0, 1 hit, 1 earned. 4.29 for NH. 4.74 in Vegas. In total 82 k and 28 BB in 73.2 innings.

Anthony Gose: 3 for 4, double, HR, steal. .253/.349/.415. 70 for 85 in stolen bases.

Moises Sierra: 2 for 5. .277/.342/.436. 16 for 30 in stolen bases. Finished his season strong.

Yan Gomes: 1 for 5. .250/.317/.464.

Mark Sobolewski: 2 for 4. .273/.324/.383

John Tolisano: 1 for 4, HR. .221/.317/.416.

Jonathan Diaz: 2 for 4, double. .252/.359/.317

Lansing 2 Dayton 3

Playoffs start Wednesday for Lansing.

Marcus Walden: 5.0, 5 hits, 1 earned, 1 BB, 3 k. Loss. 6-6, 3.24.

Jonathan Jones: 4 for 4, walk. .298/.385/.371 in 35 games with Lansing. .283/.356/.354 in 64 with Vancouver.

Jake Marisnick: 0 for 2, 2 k. .320/.392/.496. 14 HR. 37 for 45 in steals.

Vancouver 3 Eugene 8

Vancouver lost game 1 of their 3 game series.

Blake McFarland started, 5.0, 4 hits, 4 earned, 4 walks, 3 k, 2 HR. Loss.

Kramer Champlin: 1.0, 4 hits, 3 runs.

They only had 5 hits. Nicholas Baligod was 2 for 4 with a HR.

Some great progress made by some of our lower level prospects – young pitchers, Gose (everyone was concerned about his SB% last year I remember), Marisnick, D’Arnaud… Who were the surprises and disappointments?

by Dr_Furious on Sep 6, 2011 11:58 AM EDT reply actions

Lot of people rated our lower prospects differently so no real consensus

but i’d argue the likes of Cooper/Nolin have been pleasant surprises. A lot of the other risers (Hutchison/Molina/Marisnick/Syndergaard (my four helium picks at season start \o/)) we’re picked by a few to shine. The down years, Drabek probably the most painful, Perez struggled a little but he’s in his first full season year and learning to deal with heavy every day catching duties so a step back was expected. You can maybe throw the likes of Ahrens and Wilson out as dead seasons, players that failed to bounceback even a little towards relevancy.

by TtD on Sep 6, 2011 12:13 PM EDT up reply actions

I wouldn't label Drabek a disappointment yet

Hes cut down on the walks in Vegas. ERA for fastball pitchers in AAA means nothing. It stinks how our good pitching prospects have to take the leap from AA to the Majors… Like Drabek did day one of the season.

I’d give him another full year in the minors then try him again.

I would argue that jumping a player from AA to MLB he did quite well

He also improved his control quite a bit in the minors… 0 walks last game of the season in AAA.

most would disagree

he didn’t do “quite well” this year

by ayjackson on Sep 6, 2011 2:09 PM EDT up reply actions

no, he really didn’t

Just about every team jumps players past Triple A

If they feel they are ready to play. Triple A has become the place where older players, who could fill in if there was an emergency, play. It has been that way for a while.

Well, teams in the PCL or most teams?

And why do we send ALL of our hitting prospects through AAA but none of our pitching prospects?

by Mike Andrew on Sep 6, 2011 12:32 PM EDT up reply actions

Most teams use AAA as a spot for older players

You rarely see a good prospect there for more than a few games. Thames had 50 some games at Vegas. Aaron Hill had 38 or something. That was always a complaint for Triple A cities, that they didn’t see the better prospects.

I blog, therefore I am.

by Tom Dakers on Sep 6, 2011 12:56 PM EDT up reply actions

But why Brett Lawrie for 69 games? Both Lawrie and Thames kicked butt thus faster promotions

I do get that Nix’s and older players being in AAA but I think that it is quite clear we are not afraid to send out hitting prospects through AAA (but we are with pitchers).

Brett Lawrie, Travis Snider, Eric Thames, Adeiny Hechavarria, David Cooper, JP Arencebia (longgg time), Brett Wallace all spent some time in Vegas (and did well) before being promoted to the bigs.

With pitchers we see Alverez and Drabek forgoing AAA and heading straight to the bigs.

Why is it different?

by Mike Andrew on Sep 6, 2011 6:01 PM EDT up reply actions

Alvarez and Carreno seem to have handled the jump over AAA quite well

Alvarez has been amazing, SSS, but it looks like he has a great future.
Carreno is “only” a reliever, however his poise has impressed me.

Nicolino

Whats the deal with Justin Nicolino?

Last two starts, under two innings in both…including 1 2/3 in his last outing. Is he hurt?

Drabek aside, man was this a good season from the team's farm

Lawrie, d’Arnaud, Alvarez, Molina, Marisnick, Gose, Nicolino, Synderlander, Hutchison, Hechavarria (to a certain extent), McGuire, Hawkins, etc.

The future looks great!

I would like to see Hech makes some better progress in the base stealing department next season.

Hopefully a little better than 61% at least.

Not changing my signature until Hechavarria is promoted to the big leagues.
