cautiously optimistic
I’m excited about this.. but hope we don’t push him too much. I doubt he’ll let management know if he’s hurting, so they’ll need to watch his back for him
starting sunday

Wooo!
Highly optimistic here, but imagine a 2012 rotation of
Romero, Morrow, Alvarez, Drabek, McGowan?*
It would be one of the hardest throwing rotations in the AL Beast. All different styles despite the fact they throw serious gas.
*I put McGowan as the 5th starter because of pitch count and innings limitations due to health

Drabek....
Not a lock for a starter. I know, Perez or Villanueva are the alternatives, or maybe a new callup.
Any vets we can sign as a free agent
to fit in mid-rotation?
right now that is true
Drabek has the potential to be much better though.
Hic sunt fortuna dracones
So did Cecil :/
And putting on my flame-resistant suit, so did (does?) Morrow.
It's rare for a team to go 162 games with 5 starters
McGowan, Cecil, Drabek and Alvarez could all get a long look in the rotation in 2012 (even without accounting for injuries). Assuming 32 starts each for Romero and Morrow, that would leave about 24 to 25 starts for each of the other 4. In McGowan’s case, he would probably be limited to that number of starts anyway. Alvarez would probably have a limit as well.

Forgot about him.

Morrow will have to pitch better than he has recently.

Maybe not quite enough yet
The Jays should sign Harden and Bedard this off season. When/if they get hurt, then bring up Alvarez, Drabek, etc to fill the spots.
It's not a matter if, but when
I’d consider Harden, but as a “closer.” He’s not going to give you more than 150 innings, but it all depends if he can take the strain of being in the BP.

Harden is fragile but
We can start off with him in the rotation but as soon as there are any problems, we can shift him to the bullpen (or the DL) and bring up one of the young arms. It’s doubtful Bedard would end up in the bullpen, more likely the DL but both would be very affordable (likely with club options) and they wouldn’t be a major obstacle to the younger pitchers coming up. Plus they’re both Canadian.
I'd pass on Bedard. He's seems so fragile
Just looking at the guy with a hard stare would be enough to put him on the DL.
If I were the Blue Jays GM then I’d consider Harden, but not as a starter. I like the idea of using the guy as a closer. 93-94 mph fastball with good movement and has two decent if not plus pitches in his change and slider. Again, not sure if he could physically deal with the rigors of relief.
To be honest, the fact they’re Canadian is probably the last thing I would consider.

Cheap options
I just thought of them as cheap options that could either do well or be moved out of the way easily if not.
The Bosox passed on Harden
after they looked at his medical charts/checkup. He has proved them wrong so far (cause they needed someone like him) but I am sure there must have been something pretty negative about Harden’s physical prospects going forward. If he was a relative giveaway or a contract with “outs” I’d be hesitant.
You mean Darvish when you say Drabek?

I hope not
or at least not for the money he’s expecting.
No. Still meant Drabek
If AA didn’t sign Beede based on his demands then I doubt he’s going to pay more than what AA’s valued Darvish at.

Congratulations to the team and the player...
Dustin has indeed rebuilt himself. After his list of surgeries it is pretty impressive to hear he will be starting this sunday. Very inspirational… suddenly the Jays have a lot going for them, eh? Very sweet end to the season, in my view…
This move is logical
Jays management needs to know what they have in McGowan. With Perez, I think they already know that he really isn’t ready to be a starter in MLB. However, he might still have a role in 2012 as a bullpen arm and returning him to that role makes sense for 2011.
If McGowan can pitch effectively in 2012, that means that AA needs to find one less arm in the off-season. If the Jays are serious about making 2012 their first year of contending (but without sacrificing the future) they’ll need at least one more experienced quality starter. McGowan would mean AA would not have to find two of them.
It’s good that the Jays have all these promising arms. I don’t think they should be relied upon initially, but Jays should be able to call on them if the initial starters get injured or falter.
Starting rotation coming out of 2012 spring training:
Romero
Morrow
Cecil
McGowan
Alvarez would be waiting in the wings should one of the above get injured or falter. Drabek as well if he can figure out his control problems.
Pitching Corp is definitely looking better
Although two things.
1) I honestly believe Morrow will be traded in the offseason. The way I see it, is if AA doesn’t want to extend you, he’s going to find a way to get value from you.
2) As much as I like Romero, and the other pitchers, I do believe we need a legitimate #2 / 1B pitcher (Think Romero when we had Marcum). I love Morrow, but I don’t think he’s reliable enough to get us through an entire year in the AL East. If we do keep him, having him, Cecil, McGowan, Alvarez, and Drabek fighting for the last three spots, makes me think of a rotation that will help us get through the AL East.
2011 Jays slogan should be "Power and Speed", not just "Hustle and Heart".

AA doesn't sell low, Morrow's going nowhere
Hic sunt fortuna dracones
Agreed
Morrow may never put it all together but it’s too early to make that determination. He still has the potential to be a top of the rotation starter. Why sell low on a guy with this much potential? I don’t think the Jays will make any big moves with their starting pitching this offseason. They need to see what they’ve got with Romero, Morow, Cecil, Drabek, Alvarez and McGowan. Bringing someone in now would get in the way of that.
To every complex problem, there is an answer that is simple, easy to understand and wrong
this would actually be the perfect time to extend morrow

I agree with some comments that Jays could use a top of the rotation arm - but in 2013
Morrow could be on the cusp of something big, Drabek and Alvarez could be on the cusp of making it to the big leagues and McGowan – just making it back. When you look at all the moves AA has made, 2012 is not the year he is aiming for. I think it starts in 2013. 2012 will be the year for analyzing what the Jays have. Apart form the pitchers, Lawrie, Thames, Snider, Rasmus and Arencibia are all still young and relatively unproven. Give them all a chance to play in 2012 and see who belongs in the long-term plan and let those who don’t belong build up their trade value.

Mark Buehrle's contract is up at the end of this year
Would love if AA could sign him.
Buerrle will...
…retire as a White Sox. I doubt he’ll be going anywhere.

Hurrah!!!!
I was quite surprised at Dustin’s movement on his pitches in his last/first appearance. Hope that wasnt a oneoff. But I seem to be rooting more for the person…he has gone thru so much personally…the number of times he must have fought with giving it all up…somewhat like Carpenter. I forget about his circumstances…whether he left for a better deal with the Cards or the Jays just gave up on him.
Why is everybody talking like Alvarez has an outside chance of making the rotation?
Having watched him beat the BoSox makes me think that he may be able to perfect his 3rd pitch on the job..

He's so young
It’s expected that he’ll have some bumps in the road before he sticks in the majors. He could always be an exception but he probably won’t.

Yes
See Drabek, Kyle.
If you judged him on his first few games, you would have thought he was going to have a decent year.
Young pitchers will break your heart

I hear ya and I don't think it's written in stone that he'll be in the rotation..
but right now I have him having a much better shot at the 4/5 spots than Drabek who did much worse against top lineups (in obviously small samples)..
Just based on these limited results, I feel he shouldn’t be automatically assumed to be in the minors next year while Drabek is pencilled into the 5th spot despite looking unimpressive in almost every way in AAA..
I know young players are due for stumbles but until he does, I don’t see any reason to think he won’t have a spot in the rotation next spring.

Exactly
Alvarez is pitching well in the majors and Drabek is pitching poorly in the minors, so why would Drabek be ahead of Alvarez in a depth chart?

I don't like this
He’s had two shoulder surgeries. I think it would be better if he pitched out of the bullpen, maybe as a closer, but I’d rather he have 60 innings a year, rather than 200 (if he can get there) on a surgically repaired shoulder.
we'll see
the possiblity of him moving into reliever is still there, but I’d rather try him as a starter and see if he can last. As a reliever, he doesn’t have much value as he would starting, even if he can stay healthy as a reliever.

The choice isn't between 60 and 200
He could pitch 160 innings as a starter and still be way more valuable than he would’ve been in relief.
