As We Feel Out Weight Return: Baltimore 2, Jays 0
Baltimore Orioles at Toronto Blue Jays, Sep 10, 2011 1:07 PM EDT
After a fun Boston series, tough one tonight.
On the Mound:
Brett Cecil was terrific. He pitched into the eighth and allowed just two runs (one earned), scattering seven singles and one walk. Cecil struck out 9 and got 8 of 14 of his batted balls on the ground.
At the Plate:
Here's where things fell apart. The Jays managed just three hits, two by Adam Lind (who also had the only extra-base hit, a double). The Jays did manage a number of walks, but with no hits to knock them in, it wasn't to be.
From the Pen:
Shawn Camp got an out to finish the 8th. Kyle Drabek pitched a clean 9th with three groundouts.
In the Field:
A Kelly Johnson fielding error led to a run.
Brett Cecil was the Jays lone Jay of the Day
The recap title comes from the same song, "The Commander Thinks Aloud."

Right of course, because we know definitively that he’s not signing here. And he has every reason not to, and he has said that he won’t.

I think he was referring to KJ’s 27% strikeout percentage..

oh. oops, that’s embarrassing.
Sorry David, I totally misunderstood that. :P Also I really want to keep Kelly Johnson.

I think my snarkiness level was at a record high there, though. That’s gotta be worth something.

How's school gurlll?
A day that will live in infamy: August 4th, 2011
7 pissed off members of the Aaron Hill fanclub
pretty good so far.
But my good eating and sleeping habits are already going down the drain. And it’s gonna be tons of work. ;P
How’s it gone for you?

Bautista... maybe we should just call him Kautista...
okay, that doesn’t work.

So where do we stand at 2B in 2012?
I can’t see us signing Johnson, maybe we’ll sign Aaron Hill back but I don’t think anybody is too excited about that. Apart from the wacky “sign Jose Reyes and move Yunel to 2B” theory I don’t see how the position isn’t a liability for the Jays for the next few years.
why do you not see us signing Johnson, but see us signing hill? that's dumb logic.

Kelly Johnson confuses me
I remember reading that he has “great patience” yet his strikeout rates are always really high.
Boohoo.
Around a 9.4 BB%, 27.6 K% this season.

patient hitters actually strike out a lot
because they end up in deep 2-strike counts
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
that seems a bit pointless
Even if you have a high walk rate, wouldn’t striking out a ridiculous amount more than cancel it out?
Boohoo.
nope
because walks are much, much better than outs, while strikeouts are really no worse than any other type of out. So if you assume that batted balls are probably going to result in outs (as they do about 70% of the time), a good walk rate makes a big difference in preventing outs while a high strikeout rate doesn’t do any real damage.
"Let us go forth awhile, and get better air in our lungs. Let us leave our closed rooms... The game of ball is glorious." - Walt Whitman
right
guys with high walk rates with low-or-average K rates tend to be exceptional hitters. Bautista, Sheffield, Jeter, Votto… pretty much all the best hitters put tons of balls in play while also walking a lot
Total Internet points: 10 000
one of those guys (Jeter) isn't quite like the others
part of what makes the Bautista, Sheffield, Votto, Pujols, etc. crowd so amazing isn’t just that they walk and don’t strike out, it’s also that they hit for power
i’d say Jeter is more of a better version of an Escobar-type . . . still a great hitter, but not at the level of those others
"Look at me! I'm Tomokazu Ohka of the Montreal Expos!"
yeah, didn't mean to nitpick
just wanted to point out that what makes those guys the truly special hitters isn’t just walking without striking out, it’s also hitting long flyballs and linedrives when they do make contact.

OT - For my high school BBB friends, or people who might like music...
I had the guy wearing the glasses come to my school and put on a little show when I was in elementary school, he might’ve also came to some of your schools..and by the way, this song is kinda catchy.

JoD
Lind’s 2-4 with a double has to be worth at least a mention. This is where WAR breaks down in my opinion; it’s not Lind’s fault no one was on base when he hit
WPA you mean

WAR is completely context independant
you’re thinking about WPA, which is completely context dependant

they ruined that chance
when they Lawrie waste an out by bunting Lind to third, imo

Sounds like I missed a heck of a duel.
On the other hand – I advise you guys to not waste your money on Contagion. Really.

even though it was a loss I feel very happy that Cecil had a good outing
I’m hoping all our fears about him this season are unfounded and he was just having a bad year.

Any thoughts about a Lind trade?
He has an affordable contract, okay numbers, can play 1B/OF/DH. Shouldn’t he be able to get us a solid Number 2 SP?
If we don’t sign Fielder, how about EE/Cooper at 1B next season?
Lind to SF for Baumgarner?
could he handle the AL Beast?

I would do that trade in a second
Not sure about SF.
i'm about 99% certain it was a joke
that trade makes zero sense for sanfrancisco

It makes sense in a HFBoards world

These kinds of games are very frustrating!
Guthrie give our guys some troubles, for whatever reason. It’s extremely frustrating to watch a middle of the road pitcher completly baffle our guys. We really need to pick up a win today and get the bats going… GO JAYS GO!
That game wasn't fun
I’m hoping for a better one today. Alvarez can be fun to watch.

Today's lineup is an odd one
Teahen is batting in place of Encarnacion at the DH, and is hitting FIFTH in the lineup above guys like Lawrie and Johnson. Also, Teahen over Cooper or Loewen?
Usually, it seems like whenever Farrell puts out an illogical lineup, the team wins.

I don't much care about the order
but I really don’t get the logic behind starting Teahen over Cooper and Loewen. It’s only one game, but still makes me a little annoyed.

That's part of my problem with Farrell
You can’t teach common sense. I wouldn’t bet he can ever lead us to the Promised Land.
You can say that for most managers in baseball, including Scioscia.

Cooper - for example
Cooper has a big game yet he’s been riding the bench since. Wouldn’t it have made sense to give him a few starts to see what we have for next season?
A few starts wouldn't tell us anything about next season
However, Cooper may be part of the Jays future – Teahen isn’t, so you’re rjght that it should be Cooper getting the AB’s
