Blue Jays Get Jason Frasor Back

As noted in the fanshot the Blue Jays traded prospects Myles Jaye and Daniel Webb to get Jason Frasor back from the White Sox.

Jaye is 20 and played for Bluefield last year, a RHP, he had a 3.00 ERA in 13 games. He was drafted in the 17th round of the 2010 draft by the Jays.

Webb is 22 and played for Bluefield and Lansing last season, he had a 5.48 ERA in 19 games between the 2 levels. He was picked in the 17th round of the 2010 draft by the Jays.

To make room for Frasor, the Jays outrighted Jim Hoey to Vegas. Out 40-man is full again with Jason.

It is an interesting move. Alex said he wanted another right-handed arm in the pen and he gets that with Jason. I'm glad Jason is back, I always liked him. He can add to his team record for appearances. Just when I thought the Jays weren't going to do anything while I was gone...

not completely

Alex had stated he was looking for another reliable bullpen arm he could use in the 7-9 (after we traded for Santos) as well as a left-hander. So, if we believed him (which I did), we knew he was looking for someone. We didn’t know it would be Frasor, but we knew Chicago was in firesale mode and Frasor is a good fit here. So, it wasn’t a choreographed move by any stretch of the imagination, but it fits the blueprint Alex publicly outlined perfectly, so I wouldn’t say it was completely unexpected.

A trade for a bullpen arm was (or should have been) expected based on AA’s December comments. Trading for Frasor was a possibility. Is that more clear?

by khaleeji on Jan 2, 2012 1:50 AM EST up reply actions

I think the original comment is more about who the player is

then the move itself. With all the rumours floating around about who the Jays are interested, once again comes a trade that no one saw coming until it was complete..

Minor note

Hoey was outrighted on Dec 19, so it had nothing to with Frasor (the post was open), unless this has been brewing for two weeks.

I must be out of it… How did we acquire him?

I don't understand this from a white sox perspective

Surely declining the option and offering arbitration offered more value then picking it up to trade him for 2 fringe prospects. If he accepts, then sure, make this trade, but as it is it makes no scene to me.

Do you have a young, talented cost controlled player having a down year who's "attitude" has cased problems with an aging player or manager?

Don't worry, I Alex Anthopoulos will take him off your hands, I'll even give you some moderately useful veterans that will "help you make a playoff run".

The Sox are having serious financial problems

They went “all in” with signing Dunn and re-signing Konerko, but as we saw last year the team pretty much blew up. Their budget was based on a winning (and playoff bound) season and did not. Suffered a major attendance and revenue drop. Pretty much crippled the Sox $ stream.

As I typed in the fanshot thread, I suspect the Sox were probably planning on keeping both Fraser and Quentin, but the unexpected extension of John Danks blew that plan out of the water forcing Kenny Williams to do two salary dumps for marginal prospects.

Even then

The most charitable thing I can say is that the process in that front office is incoherent.

And they didn’t have to entend Danks, they could have easily traded him, just apparently no one met their price

by MjwW on Jan 1, 2012 5:43 PM EST up reply actions

Could be an ownership/management difference.

Kind of like when Boras got the Steinbrenners to sign Soriano over Cashman’s objections
Or closer to home when Godfrey pushed the Wells extension on JPR.

Could be

And we know Reinsdorf has strong preferences (never spend money on the draft). But I still consider that an incoherent front office process/dynamic – I include an owner as part of the front office

by MjwW on Jan 1, 2012 6:02 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, I see your point.

It could have been (sort of was) the Jays if Godfrey and his idiot style of “management” plus JP had stuck around longer.

by Damaso's Burnt Shirt on Jan 1, 2012 6:07 PM EST up reply actions

I'm sure that someone could.

I understand that Yanks wanted Danks, but the White Sox weren’t going to get a Latos/Gonzales type return for only one year of cost “control.”

ie: no Montero or Killer Bs.

by Damaso's Burnt Shirt on Jan 1, 2012 5:48 PM EST up reply actions

"Killer Bs"

Are both very overrated – they’re B type prospects, not untouchables. That said, if no one’s meeting your price from Danks, it doesn’t mean you extend him (unless at very favourable terms), you wait and trade later, or lower your price and get what you can. If extending Danks necessitating firesale of other assets, it’s counterproductive

by MjwW on Jan 1, 2012 6:04 PM EST up reply actions

Not according to Yanks fans (understandable.)

However, both have some serious command/control issues so I have to agree with you.

I Remember...

Prior to the 2010 season a lot of people complaining about Bautista not being the answer we needed in the lineup and were wondering if AA knew what he was doing after the Holliday trade.

This trade is good for both sides. The Jays fill their needs now with a reliable late inning relief pitcher. The Sox getting something to be hopeful for. Even if each never joins a rotation and become Frassor’s themselves, it’s a win/win for both clubs.

And I doubt that Danks will be in a ChiSox uniform come opening day. If he is, he won’t be come trade deadline. Someone will overpay for him.

by FanInJapan on Jan 2, 2012 3:46 PM EST up reply actions

Danks

Has a no trade clause for 2012. So he’s have to consent to be traded, which would be odd, considering he presumably negotiated the clause for a reason

by MjwW on Jan 2, 2012 3:48 PM EST up reply actions

I agree, that because of the no-trade it is very unlikely a move happens

However, I would think that another reason for getting the no-trade clause is so that he can control the destination of a trade – if he gets traded to a team like Baltimore, he has the right to not go. He may be willing to waive his no-trade clause if it means moving to a contender (or not, I have no way of knowing either way).

by Playoffs!!!!1 on Jan 2, 2012 4:07 PM EST up reply actions

is it not odd

that he signs a 5 yr extension and only gets the no trade clause for the first year? Really whats the point, if you are going to sign on for 5 more years you would think the team wouldn’t want to move you in that first year, and if for some reason they did, they won’t have to wait long to do it.

May also have something to do with the fact that he had one year left of team control – maybe he felt that since he was forgoing the opportunity to be a FA in a year, he wanted the assurance of not going for the next year.

by MjwW on Jan 2, 2012 5:13 PM EST up reply actions

case study: Santos

If Santos, also from Chicago, had had a no trade clause for the first year in his new contract he wouldn’t be a Blue Jay right now. In other words, the White Sox have a (recent) history of sign and trades that Danks’ agent wanted to avoid.

by khaleeji on Jan 2, 2012 11:25 PM EST up reply actions

Echo this I don’t think Zach Stewert is a nobody. I think he’ll have a major league career… it might be as part of a bullpen but I think he’ll stick.

All things being considered I think everyone came out fine in that trade. Cardinals won the WS, we got Rasmus, and the WS got 3 prospects and saved some money basically in exchange for a guy that was going to leave for free agency anyways.

by Parallex on Jan 1, 2012 10:45 PM EST up reply actions

for sure.

and actually I hope Rasmus turns things around, because they actually gave up quite a bit for him. 6 years of Zep, a decent prospect in Stewart, 2 picks, 4 months of good relief pitching. They also have to pay Mark Teahan over $5M I think. They sent an undisclosed amount of cash to the Cards. And Rasmus will make over $5M next season and if he has a good season, much more in 2013.

And now to get Frasor back, he sent over two low level prospects who may or may not pan out.

I never thought the Rasmus deal was a steal. AA is gambling and I hope it works.

Just listing the total dollar amount is a bit misleading nah? I mean the 250M number would be spread out over many years (some of which may not be accrued to us later in the event of a trade) and unless you advocate fielding replacement level players it’s going to take significant money to man those positions anyways.

Not that the number isn’t likely correct but it’s a bit more complex then that.

Nnamdi Asomugha was said to be down to the jets and the cowboys. out of nowhere philly signed him. this was partly due to management telling his agent any rumors would break the talks. It was shocking seeing this happen in the nfl when it happens so regularly with AA

AA could be doing this

since some teams leak rumors to drive up the price and create bidding wars or having teams get cold feet if they aren’t “getting enough” from a reaction stand point.

Welcome back Frasor

That should be the bullpen to start the season off:

We do this every time we add someone to the bullpen, but it doesn’t hurt to have the depth chart in view:

Santos, Janssen, Frasor, Litsch, Oliver, Villanueva, Carreno, Perez, Carpenter and either Magnuson, Uviedo, or the 6th starter (Drabek, Laffey). And we have some more depth in Farquhar, Farina, Hoey, etc). I can see some more waiver claim / minor league contract signings to fill out the Las Vegas roster also.

To recap discussion from earlier posts, the bullpen will only have 7 men at any given time, but the likelihood of injuries and slumps mean that you usually want about 10 capable major league relievers (at least if you’re AA) plus minor league depth. If they’re all firing on all cylinders at the same time, you have some guys with options biding their time in AAA or you trade someone mid-season when relievers are in demand.

by khaleeji on Jan 2, 2012 12:51 AM EST reply actions

The bullpen depth has gone from a weakness to a strength, the lineup is starting to get intimidating 1-9 (seriously if Lind and Snider/Thames are the least threatening players in your lineup you’re doing something right) and we are well stocked in young starting pitching. There’s a lot to be excited for this Spring.

Happy New Year's BBB

I hope everyone had a great holiday season… I would like to wish a safe, healthy and prosperous 2012 to all!!!

I am overhaul that AA did on the bullpen this season. The best part is that it isn’t over because we still get to see what draft picks we will get for Francisco and Rauch signing with the Mets. As it stands right now I think we have the arms for our bullpen to be extremely competitive in 2012. What do you guys think?

I have to admit, I never once imagined we would see Frasor back in Toronto and when AA was saying he needed another reliable RH reliever, Frasor was nowhere in my thought process for whom that was going to be. Once again the Ninja strikes, and the Blue jays are starting 2012 off on the right foot.

Blue Jay prospect ratings by Beyond the Box Score

I don't like the ranking system

The tiers are okay, but the points are arbitrary and don’t tell us anything.

The scouting reports he has for players are more summaries than full scouting reports, there’s a few nice tidbits (this is all free content, and I’m happy to get anything so this isn’t a complaint).

In general, it’s pretty realistic, though my criticism would be he’s basically ranking by ceiling, not considering the likelihoods of reaching them – Syndergaard’s ceiling is certainly top tier, but there’s a high washout rate so I’d hesitate thinking of him as the highest tier type prospect

by MjwW on Jan 2, 2012 4:21 PM EST up reply actions

Remember, these rankings aren’t created with the intention of recognizing hidden talent in an organization. To be completely straight-forward, this is done to rank team’s prospects based on the impact they will have on their club once they have reached their potential and are in the majors.

From the article

by khaleeji on Jan 2, 2012 11:59 PM EST up reply actions

so it would seem the question Gershman is attempting to answer is: if the top 12 prospects (where he gets those top 12 from is a questionmark, but they mostly lineup with other rankings, just not necessarily in the same order) for each major league team were to reach the majors which team would be better.

by khaleeji on Jan 3, 2012 12:03 AM EST up reply actions

No I understood that

I understand he’s ranking by ceiling, I’m just saying I don’t necessarily find that the most useful way to think about prospects.

That said, as I said above, it’s free analysis, and there’s some nice pieces of info in there, so it’s rich for me to be compaining.

by MjwW on Jan 3, 2012 12:30 AM EST up reply actions

Frasor? Really? Might as well bring back Josh Towers while you're at it

Hey…is BJ Ryan still available?

by Buster Bluth on Jan 3, 2012 10:53 AM EST reply actions

Frasor is better than both Towers asn post surgery Ryan. Actually Frasor is one of the more dependable relievers out there. He has also proven his effectiveness in the best division in baseball for years. Seriously why are people mad about this offseason? Because the media made up a bunch of garbage rumours? It is quite odd how the public opinion on the Jays seems to have changed so abruptly

I mean, coming into this off-season, people didn’t seem to really expect the Jays to be big spenders. I’m pretty sure everything I read was that people were onboard with the constant improvements we have been seeing and continuing with the thorough rebuild of this team. But then all the rumours about the Jays going after every big ticket free agent / player on the market, and all of a sudden AA has been an absolute failure because he is not closing on these mirage deals, mostly made up by talking heads at various media outlets, and agents / other front offices driving up the price for their players.
