Hatred for the Yankees
Does anyone else loath the Yankees? Does their crazy spending, ability to get all the best players and basically field an all star team every year, enrage you as it becomes harder and harder every year for the Blue Jays to compete with them.? After signing Kuroda, acquiring Pineda, I wouldn't be surprised if they sign Prince Fielder now that Montero is gone. What is another 27 million a year to them? If 20 years of being a Blue Jays fan/New York Yankee hater has taught me on thing, it is that yes, they are that Evil. What does pure Evil look like? I'm not sure but i'm pretty sure it wears pinstripes. The New York Yankees would be like Hans Gruber from the movie Die Hard if the movie ended with Hans Killing McLean and getting away with the money.
Feel free to post about your hatred for the Yankees in this thread and all the Yankee haters share misery.

I don't know about evil, but they sure are the most inefficient team in NA sports.
The fact that they have to spend four times the Rays’ payroll to make the playoffs is a sign of laziness and a lack of front-office talent.
by Defense Counts! on Jan 13, 2012 9:02 PM EST reply actions
I dunno about that
It’s not laziness, they’re a well-run organization, they have looser financial constraints but the enormous expectations of always being in the playoffs, which is difficult in such a tough division.
Their front office is pretty good. They’ve givne out some bad FA contracts, but that’s the cost of elite talent, it’s hat’s expected…the cost of business in a way.
They also won 4 championships while the Rays were out finishing dead last every year. I can’t possibly call the Yankees front office lazy or lacking talent. That seems a little bit ridiculous to me, honestly.
Clear eyes, full hearts, can't lose.
Proof too
The comparison between the modern Yankees and the Yankees when they were directly run by George Steinbrenner (pre-1990) is night and day. Those Yankee teams had the same financial resources as the current regime, but were poorly run.
The current regime might be better run that that, but they have still lost in the first round of the playoffs.
Just like Tampa Bay.

playoffs are crapshoot though
can you honestly say that the Cardinals were the best team in MLB in 2011

I believe Steinbrenner was suspended by MLB during a portion of the 80's iirc.
(That might not even be the right way to put it.)
That is correct
George was banned from baseball for 3 years. He was reinstated but prohibited from directly running the Yankees in 1990 (and that was what I was referring to).
Okay, thanks.
probably misunderstood your point too.. lol
We come back to the same point.
The Yankees bought success. What they accomplished was done with the biggest payroll (often by far) in the majors.
Again I ask the question: would they have had the same success with a payroll equal to that of the second-biggest spending team? If the answer is yes, then they wasted money, which makes them inefficient. If the the answer’s no, then they obviously lacked the front office talent to win with a more reasonable (but still very high) payroll.

My mistake. This was supposed to be a reply to Jevant's post.
by Defense Counts! on Jan 17, 2012 5:18 AM EST up reply actions
my answer is yes
especially during their late-90’s run. They developed Jeter, Rivera, Williams, Pettite, Posada and others in-house and brought in effective role players like O’Neill and Brosius. These weren’t massive expenditures and could have been made even within the constraints of the second- or third-highest payroll at the time.
In the 00’s, they’ve really started throwing around the cash (A-Rod, Jeter extension, CC, Burnett, etc), but without the Yankees’ payroll, they wouldn’t have been able to afford to throw money at question marks like Burnett and Pavano. Even spending at Red Sox, Mets or Dodgers levels would have made them think twice about some of their signings. Now, I guess you can argue that they would have signed Burnett and turned down CC, but I don’t think that’s true. I think with a smaller payroll Cashman would have only targeted top-notch signings and looked in-house (like keeping Chamberlain in the rotation rather than jerking him around constantly). Those in-house options couldn’t have turned out much worse than the big-money guys and the rest of the team was still so strong that the team would have still be very successful.
I think they spent that money because they could, not because they are dumb. Given tighter constraints, they just would have avoided certain signings and been not-much-worse off for it.
I don't hate them
They aren’t breaking any rules by pushing their revenues back into the team. More teams should be doing that. However, I don’t like that they’re in the AL East and will continue to get in the Jays way.
If they moved to the NL Central, I would have no problems with them at all.
His 2011 wRC+ is 26
I would have LOVED Pineda on the Jays.
19yr old with ‘ace’ stuff who had a awesome rookie season.
If by 19yr old you mean 19yr old in 2008
He was born in Jan 1989, so he was 22 last year and will be 23 this season.
He had an awesome first half, but overall was closer to very good.
As for the “ace” stuff, the jury is still out on that
Its not like they bought pineda
it was a smart move, congrats to them.
Don’t worry we will still crush them =)
+1 is only good if you actually rec the post
Actually, they kind of did
Montero was an IFA signing, which means money was used to bring him on board to be later used as a trade chip. The Yankees have spent heavily in the IFA market to cover up for their poor positioning in the draft.

Cashman's a smart GM. Good FO with money. I dislike them, but tinged with some envy.
The one guy crying hardest about this trade is Boras as it removes them from the Edwin Jackson market and pretty much every FA of his.

Do you really have to be a smart GM to win with that payroll?
Or asked another way: would the Yankees be regular contenders with a budget equal to Boston’s (which is also very high)?

I hate their fans more than words can describe. And I hate A-Rod more than any other athlete.

yeah, I hate the fans way more than the team itself
but I don’t hate Arod. Jeter is much worse

Arod has cheated on baseball and his wife. Also, has Jeter ever had a photo shoot that shows how full of himself he is, embracing himself in a mirror?
Arod’s a pretty crappy human being.
Just wondering why anyone would hate Jeter more than him or how Jeter is worse.

You're right, poor choice of words on my point
I don’t like the difference in treatment of the two players . ARod gets treated like a piece of scum while Jeter is treated like a god amongst men
His 2011 wRC+ is 26
True, Jeter is treated like a golden child
and it’s a little ridiculous at times. But to be fair, Arod is scum, and they do not need to be treated equally.
It’s kind of hard to hate Jeter for what other people do to him, though, imo. What’s he supposed to do, tell people to stop saying awesome things about him? haha
Arod, on the other hand, does this stuff to himself.

I'm with Pikachu on this one
The treatment Jeter gets, especially compared to A-Rod, is sickening. Yeah, A-Rod is a huge douchebag who is always trying too hard with his image but he’s a vastly superior player to Jeter. Also, Jeter isn’t the team first guy everyone makes him out to be. Look at last year’s contract negotiations and read the Yankee Years by Joe Torre and Tom Verducci.

I think the treatment Jeter gets is more a function of the NYY fanbase
Than Jeter himself. He doesn’t go around saying he’s the best yankee who ever lived etc., at least I haven’t seen or heard him say that.
He just happens to be the captain of the richest and most popular team in the league. He’s the same as Tom Brady, Dwayne Wade, David Beckham or Sidney Crosby. These guys never go out and say they are the best (a la A Rod), but they are treated like gods by their teams and since they play for the biggest teams in their respective leagues, they get way more love. Sure, some of the blame may rest on them, but most of it has to do with the media and the fans.
A guy like A Rod, Ron Artest, Lebron James, Terrell Owens etc., those guys are different. They claim they are the best, which sometimes is true. This usually results in them being loved by their own fanbase and hated by the rest of the league. Then once they stop performing and acting out, their own fanbase will turn against them.
I hate the Yankees as much as the next guy, but I have a lot of respect for Jeter.
Can we start the Gose watch yet?
Good point on Jeter and Yankees' fans
However, I’ve never heard A-Rod refer to himself as the best. Yeah, he does weird things and he’s a total headcase but I’ve never heard of him thinking he was the best. I’ve heard he tries to be the best. Maybe, I’m wrong though.
P.S. I hate Tom Brady, Beckham and Crosby for the exact same reasons you mentioned. I don’t care about basketball so D-Wade is fine in my books.

I also hate those 3 guys too
But I know I wouldn’t hate Crosby if he played for Columbus. And I hate Beckham a heck of a lot less ever since he left Europe. And if Brady played for the Bills, I would definitely dislike him less.
And yes, I don’t think A-Rod does say he’s the best, I was trying to get at him being arrogant/full of himself instead. I can’t stand that. I don’t really that same feeling of arrogance with respect to Jeter though.
Can we start the Gose watch yet?

I hate the Tigers more than the Yankees.
The Tigers have cut me bad, real bad. It’s really sad that the Jays never play them anymore, would be great if the Jays and Tigers could bow out of most of their interleague games and play each other a bunch of times instead, it was a great rivalry.
I go to all 3 games at Comerica every year between the teams.
There’s still a rivalry in the fan’s eyes.
"And I'm like forget Yuuuuuu"
I hate the Yankees
Because I’m a Jays fan. I’m trying to find other reasons to hate them, but I can’t really. Nova going upstairs on Bautista in ’10 comes to mind as a female-dog move, but Jose got his pay back.
They haven’t bought a world series lately, so meh.
He paid them back twice
Didn’t he go deep on Robertson in the 8th to give them the win?

i disagree...
any pitcher, rookie or not that wants to pitch inside to Jose is going to pay…I stand by Jose giving that stare after hitting that bomb….
Yeah I agree
Rookie or not, it doesn’t matter. You have to make it clear that going upstairs is not cool, and it’s not like Bautista charged the mound or anything, he got the best kind of revenge in taking Nova yard. Kind of like what he did against Halladay in July this past year – I believe Halladay knocked him down, and Baustista took him yard
or you know
it’s completely possible that he just missed his spot. And IIRC it was Robertson he hit the HR off of
His 2011 wRC+ is 26
He took both Nova and Robertson long in that game. And like I said, you get caught up in the game, against one of your division rivals…he didn’t charge the mound, I’m fine with some emotion. It’s perfectly fine to see it differently
check the vid
http://toronto.bluejays.mlb.com/video/play.jsp?content_id=11294917&c_id=mlb
I dunno about you, but seemed to me like Nova completely missed going inside to Bautista (the catcher was nowhere close to the ball) and Bautista started coming towards the mound
His 2011 wRC+ is 26
I have no doubt Nova missed the spot
But consider the context:
1) Bautista took him yard in the previous AB
2) Nova knocks Bautista down with a fastball high and in
We can see that the spot was missed, but Bautista is looking at the pitcher, not the catcher. He doesn’t see him setting up.
3) The ump issues a warning, which would imply (to Bautista) there’s some intent, even if the warning was probably unnecessary.
4) Bautista stares him and down and tells him to watch it. Overkill? Maybe, but you’re not the one who just had a 92 MPH fastball end up in the vicinty of your head. Again, it’s not like he jumped up and charged the mound
5) Nova, a rookie, starts jawing back. If it was an accident he should have just shut his mouth and focussed on the next pitch. Instead, he escalated the situation and was needlessly provocative.
Hate but...
There are some players I do like: Granderson, Martin, Swisher and Cano are great players are great people. I also respect their GM, but the long time yankees (A-Rod, Jeter & Posada), the fans and the way all of baseball treats them like their history entitles them to always get attention sickens me.
I agree exactly with what you said. Those 4 players are the only ones I like. Jeter has never bothered me as much as most people though.
I loveee watching Cano play.
"And I'm like forget Yuuuuuu"
Jeter didn't bother me that much either
Until last year’s contract extensions. Nothing wrong with a guy getting the most money he can get from a business sense, but the reality didn’t match the perception that he’s this humble guy who only cares about winning.
I told my fiance about Jeter and the gift baskets
She replied, “wow, way to make those girls feel like whores.”

I hate the Red sox too
Both the Yankee and Red Sox fans are terrible. I hate both of these teams and I wish all of Blue Jays Nation felt more animosity toward these teams and their fans. It makes me sick to see the Rogers Centre full of these Sox and Yankee cap wearing morons when we play these teams. I wish the Blue Jays would institute a special service charge for anyone from New England or New York State when they buy tickets. That way we can at least monetize even more from playing these teams. Ideally a $60 ticket would go $100 for anyone from New England or New York.
Special service charge...I like that
They levy enough special serivce changes o us Canadians you’d think they’d have no problem doing it to foreigners!
I think this all comes down to envy.
When the Blue Jays had the highest payroll in MLB and were snapping up key free agents during the World Series-winning years, I don’t recall hearing of any Jays fans being upset about it.
