Bartolo Colon for 1 yr/$2mm. Why didn't the Jays get him?
Bartolo Colon was available for a 1 year deal. He's a veteran innings-eater who would have been a perfect fit for the Jays who are looking for additional starting pitching, but at a reasonable cost. Colon was a 2.9WAR pitcher last year and while you cannot expect that next year, he would have been good for 150 innings and brought stability to the #4 spot in the rotation. A 3.57 XFip last year for only $2-3MM seems like a missed opportunity.
Here's hoping the Jays take a chance and bring Rich Harden in on a similar deal. The upside there for that price is worth the immense injury risk that Harden brings to the table.

Because the other guys that could be in the rotation
have a chance at being quite a bit better then him?
Thats my logic anyway
+1 is only good if you actually rec the post
We already have one power pitcher
With a potentially volatile shoulder, and his facial hair is much more epic than Colon’s.
uggggg ....
I wanted to type more, but that was all I could come up with
Because the Blue Jays already have a dome-shaped stadium

Colon
Wouldn’t want to play at the Dome. Honestly, he’s trying to parlay one more 1 year contract into something more next season. Oakland is the perfect stadium for him.
@VagabondBansal
Colon eats innings? He's pitched more than 100 inning once in the last 6 years
It was last year at 164 innings…not exactly what you would want from an innings eater.
I blog, therefore I am.

Where would he fit on this roster?
In honor of the Jays 2nd Baseman who played with fire in more ways than one.

List of guys I'd rather give innings to
Other than Romero and Morrow (locks) and Alvarez (prohibitive rotation favourite):
- McGowan
- Drabek
- Cecil
- Jenkins
- McGuire
- Hutchison
- Laffey
And that ignores FAs like Harden, who I’d much rather sign than Colon, even for a little more

I'd take Colon over Laffey, but that's the only one
Hic sunt fortuna dracones
There is only 1 "n" in Hutchison
Harden isn't an innings-eater either
He has never thrown 195+ innings in a season and has only topped 150 once (in 2004). He has thrown less than 100 innings in each of the past 2 season. I don’t get the obsession with Harden as a target.
Yes he’s good when healthy, but very rarely healthy. There is some evidence that staying healthy is a skill, and Harden doesn’t have it. I could see him as a reliever, but he’ll cost a lot more than other relievers who offer likely-comparable production. I’ll pass on him unless he’s super cheap, which he won’t be.
ya, you are right
and he is a good pitcher, though I’m not sure he’s definitely better (especially given his poor healthiness skill) than the guys he’d be fighting for a back-of-the-rotation spot. I think Harden’s name has been brought up in previous discussions of potential veteran, innings-eater acquisitions on other threads, though.
To be fair
I never called him an innings-eater. I was making a list of guys I’d rather give innings to (when healthy) over Colon. And whatever you can say about Harden’s durability, you ca also say about Colon as well.
oh, totally agree
I’d rather have Harden than Colon, but don’t think that either is really a good SP acquisition and I don’t really think the Jays should get either guy.
That said, if AA decided to go after one of them on a similar contract to what Colon got from the A’s, I couldn’t argue since it’s basically risk free. I just think its very unlikely to work out and would just take innings from a younger guy who is likely to be just as good now and better later.
I think we agree here.
If we needed a Canadian pitcher with injury problems, Erik Bedard would make more sense.

The problem with Colon is he still thinks he's a starter. Long relief would save his shoulder
Jeff Francis has got anything on what we already have. Just another arm. McGowan would provide better than Francis.
I meant to write ...
… would have made more sense.
On the same note, isn’t Jeff Francis still available?
