Blue Jay Release Mark Teahen

Not a surprise but the Blue Jays have released Mark Teahen.

They will have to pay him the $5.5 million that he is owed. I keep telling them I'd be willing not to play for them for half that. I need a better agent.

You all know that he was part of the three team trade that got us Colby Rasmus. Teahen hit .200/.273/.300 for the White Sox and Blue Jays combined, last year.

He did well for us on Team Canada

…here’s hoping we have a spot for him in the next WBC.

As well, let’s hope he latches on to an NL team or something.

Trade for Garza?

Stop acting like we’re Oakland or something bro. We need to trade for Felix Hernandez or else I’m not coming to the games LOLZ.

Here's what makes me nervous

The people who recommended this – do they realize it was humour, or they actually believe it

It's just so unbelievably unlike you

I’m sure it couldn’t have been interpreted as sincere.

I think most of us got it

At least I did.

Class move by the organization.

This is one of those things you reference when negotiating with an FA. Letting Teahen play instead of rotting on our 25 man and gaining nothing.

Question

Are the Jays off the hook for any of his contract if he signs elsewhere?

by Beer Leaguer on Jan 17, 2012 11:55 PM EST via Android app reply actions

No

They’re only off the hook for whatever another team agrees to pay him. And since that’s not going to be more than $5.5M, he’ll just sign for the major league minimum and the Jays will pay the rest (of less, if it’s a minor legue contract).

by MjwW on Jan 18, 2012 12:05 AM EST up reply actions

You mean yes

Even if it’s only 500k that still qualifies as part of the contract. But I am splitting hairs.

Sorry

Not splitting hairs, I missed the “any of”…thought you meant the entire thing if someone else picks him up

Wait

Teahan was on the Jays?

Excuse me, do these effectively hide my thunder?

COFFEE COCK

I know it helped me remember, then again probably dont need to remember it anymore

by STZ513 on Jan 18, 2012 1:14 AM EST up reply actions

Not necessarily

We all know that AA likes to reacquire players he previously had.

It’s not inconceivable to me that Coffeecock (Teahen) could be back in a year or two as a veteran utility player on a minimum contract.

by siggian on Jan 18, 2012 9:48 AM EST up reply actions

Clarification

There’s no room on the roster this year, so AA is forced to release him. That could change in 2013 or 2014.

by siggian on Jan 18, 2012 9:50 AM EST up reply actions

If there is no room for him when he is getting $5.5 million from us

I can’t imagine there would be rooms ever. If Alex wanted to keep him, he could have asked Mark to go to Vegas. I think he still has options.

I blog, therefore I am.

I believe because of his service time and contract type, he would be able to refuse the assignment

with essentially the same result (being released). If he is going to play in the minors, he would probably rather take his 5.5M and sign somewhere he has a better chance at getting back to the majors.
