Make Your Predictions: Edwin Encarnacion
Edwin Encarnacion had a pretty strange 2011 season. Entering spring training he was to be DH and back up at first base. Then, at the very end of spring training, they decided to move Edwin to third base. Almost predictably, that didn't turn out well. If there was ever a player that needed a full spring to get read to play third base it is Edwin.
His season started poorly with both the glove and the bat. When it did, Farrell moved him off third and we were treated to the baseball stylings of Jayson Nix. That started well but, again predictably, didn't continue to go well for long.
It took Edwin until early June to get his OBP above .300. But then he hit great in June, July and August, having OPS of .846, .909 and .961 those months. Anyway, we took a closer look at his 2011 back here.

The question for today is what do you think he'll do with the bat in 2012. Bill James has him hitting .266/.341/.462, with 16 home runs and 53 RBI in 115 games. I'd like to think that if he hits that well, Farrell will use him more than that. The thing about Edwin is it does take him a bunch of at bats to get his timing down.
Me? I'm hoping they give him the DH job, maybe have him platoon at first base, the less Adam Lind plays against LHP, the better, I think. I really can't see him playing outfield. I'll guess that he'll play 140 games, hit 25 homers, bat .275/.330/.475. Give us your guess.

Maybe...if the Jays demote him to AAA
which they should…he’s a wasted bat= at DH.

based on what?
He is what he is…a below average hitter and fielder.

His shoulder?
As the season neared its end poor Edwin’s shoulder was a shambles. I remember the serious grimaces with every one of his powerful swings before they shut him down – surely – some of you must as well?
Shoulders – unlike elbows – can easily be career threatening. I’ve not seen a thing this winter about how his recovery is coming along. Have any of you?
My prediction
An EE cold streak will drive Craig in Calgary to consume copious amounts of liquid at least once during the upcoming season.
No, that's Fielder

Timy little error...
If there was ever a player that neededa full spring to get read to playto have his third basemen’s gloves incinerated never to return so that he is never, ever, ever put at third base it is Edwin.
Fixed

me too
I think his 2010 metrics was a fluke, but I still think he could have been kinda sorta okay at 3B (with his bat making up for his lack of glove)
Disagree profoundly
I don’t see anything in his record that can support this. As soon as he botches a few plays, it gets inside his head, and more importantly, he then carries it to the plate with him.
On an emergency basis, fine. Other than that, never.

Help me out here
“hit and defended well”
This is a same EE who was designated for assignment in June 2010 and cleared waivers – no one wanted him for free (in terms of consideration going back to the Jays)
Fangraphs has the UZR at -1.5 (-2.3 UZR/150)
B-R has the Total Zone Rating at -2
DRS at 3
So at best that’s average defense. And in the context of the rest of the data we have, since we know we cannot rely on the metrics for single season data, we would say that’s the high point by far of his career.

I agree
It seemed to me his second stint at 3rd, he looked reasonable. Let’s face it, Farrell really sabotaged EE to start the season. As the post mentioned, if there’s any player who need repetitions defensively, it’s Edwin. Don’t forget, Bautista asked for a week of practice before manning 3rd, so why would anyone expect someone with the defensive history of Edwin to smoothly play the position with no practice?
That being said, it’s my hope that Edwin doesn’t play any 3rd this year. I want to see a full season of Lawrie.

If there is any justice whatsoever in the world
150 games – 60 at 1B, 90 at DH.
Something like .260/.335/.470, plus or minus depending on the exact platoon split.
55 xBH
.296/.361/.494 with 24 hrs
I kinda stole this from baseball reference. Those are his splits at DH last year in 70 games.

If he can avoid playing 3B, I see a great year ahead for Encarnacion. OPS around .820 with 25-30 HRs. I don’t think his second half was a fluke, it seemed that he got his act together as soon as they took him off 3B.

Also, for those interested
The Jays will be the next team to have their ZiPS projections released at Baseball Think Factory. Not sure exactly when it will happen, but I’m guessing early next week based on the rateat which they have been being released
I think he'll have an OPS over .800, but with at least one full month where it's under .600
Also, this (been so long since I had an excuse to post this video):

I'm going to go out on a limb and guess a career year for him. Next year will be his outlier season.
.282/.350/.500
33 HR, 101 RBI
Why is this disturbing
Worst case scenario, they sign him to a bargain deal and he’s another potential option.
well if Francis is the rotation and pitching in the AL East with his 85 mph I will find
it disturbing
I don't think I'd worry too much about it. He'd be fine as AAA depth though.
I can’t see him wanting to come to Toronto. There aren’t enough openings. Frankly, I’m a little surprise Laffey is coming. I guess he must be banking on either McGowan getting injured or Cecil and Drabek flopping.
Jays ZiPS are out
http://www.baseballthinkfactory.org/oracle/discussion/2012_zips_projections_toronto_blue_jays
The pitching is pretty hideous
His 2011 wRC+ is 26
I'd be shocked
If Drabek, McGowan, Litsch, and Cecil were this bad this year. But I’d take that top 4 bull-pen after last year.
"Subdue the enemy without fighting" ~ Sun Tzu
I like how they refer to Oliver as "Buzz Oliver"
I’m alittle surprised the projection for Cecil is that pessimistic – I’d have thought moke likehalfwat between that projection and average, but the rest make sense. Alvarez has so little data that average is a good projection, McGowan is such a wild card that a projection system isn’t going to be able to say much of anything.
Some of the clasifications – Litsch as a starter, Laffeyas a reliver seem odd, though I imagine the ciomputer just dumps them whereever they had the most appearences. Also, why’s Shawn Camp there?
If he get´s no firework in his hands this spring....
