really depends on what you think of Darvish's prospect status

hard to see the Rangers’ farm not being #1 with him included as a prospect

His 2011 wRC+ is 26

Definitely #1 farm system if you include Darvish

And I would

I thought it was funny that he described the Brewers’ hitting as “a little thin”…

Here's my attempt at a witty sig. Didn't really go so well, methinks.

It's very good considering where the Jays were in the dark days of 2009.

Can’t wait for the 140th FanPost this off season as to why the Jays should trade most if not all of those hard earned/developed prospects for some vague idea of contention in the AL Beast.

Just don’t get too comfortable with it.

why would we not get comfortable

Alex Rios was the best RF in the game for about three years

if a prospect produces more than 15 wins for you, he did damn well

The C rankings were off, though. Quiroz and Cash… /shudders

Actually from '06 to '08 it was Ichiro, according to fWAR

but Rios wasn’t far behind. Markakis was close too.

yeah, those three were right at the top

Rios did it in the fewest PAs though. in any case, he’s definitely among the best

by benk on Jan 24, 2012 10:11 AM EST up reply actions

I didn't realize how close he was to being number 1

His defence made up a lot of that. Ichiro was the best all-around RF. Markakis was a better hitter. It looks like Ordonez was the best hitter but his D dragged him down.

You’re right though about the PAs. Maybe if he had been the starter at the beginning of ‘06, he’d have made it even closer.

yeah

he was a really good defensive player, and was a decent hitter for a couple years

by benk on Jan 24, 2012 10:28 AM EST up reply actions

True.

Hey, Alex Rios worked out well for the Jays… when they released him.

Although I have to admit, he did well when he played here, but that 5K game and the fallout from that game still linger.

maybe I'm just really biased and don't see it

but any time a draft pick/prospect can legitimately be called the best player at his position over 3 seasons – as Rios was – the draft pick/prospect worked out. period, full stop.

Holy carp

From the Q&A session in 2004:

Q: Jim S. from Milwaukee asks:
Would you characterize Guillermo Quiroz as a good defensive catcher with an acceptable bat or does he offer a better offense-defense balance with the possibility that he could be a better than average offensive catcher? Also, would you say he is the third best catching prospect behind Mauer and Mathis?
A:

John Manuel: I’ll let Josh rank the catchers, but it’s probably between Navarro and Quiroz, and my familiarity with Quiroz would have me in his corner. I think he’s an offense-defense balance guy; he’s got a chance to hit 20-30 home runs in the major leagues, his raw power rivals that of Josh Phelps. His defense is better than his offense, but calling him a guy with an ‘acceptable’ bat doesn’t do him justice, I don’t think.

Is it me, or does that sound eerily similar to the current d’Arnaud-JPA debate?

Quiroz had better raw power numbers than d’Arnaud as a 21 year old in AA (1.84 bases per hit). Phelps transition to the MLB, from a first look, looks similar to JPA (Though with more strikeouts and walks than JPA).

ugh.
Q: David Stevens from Medicine Hat asks:
Is Russ Adams a better prospect than Brent Abernathy was? Abernathy had better number at a younger age but never turned into a regular second baseman in the majors
A:

John Manuel: Yes, Adams is more athletic than Abernathy, a better base stealer and draws more walks. I saw Abernathy at his best, in the 2000 Olympics, and he made it to the big leagues, so I don’t think ill of him as it seems many Jays fans do. Adams has more offensive upside, though.

Ouch.

They didn’t release him. The White Sox made a waiver claim and they didn’t contest it.
