My dad had no idea what he was getting into...
So I was talking to my dad today through e-mails as we usually do throughout the day, and when I told him about the Fielder signing he responded with this question:
My Dad: Ouch, that hurts. Detroit looks pretty good, Jays need something, another bat?
Below is my response:
I think arms are the biggest need. They locked up Morrow for the next 3 or 4 years today. I like the signing. They have a very good prospect system, which can be tunred into more immediate help through trade or we wait and see. I think we're going to see one or two of the prospect pitchers this season. We should see an opening day start for the Alvarez guy who came up near the end of last year and looked good. They still have Drabek who had a horrible year last year but was a number one pitching prospect and the biggest piece in the Halladay trade. McGowan is coming back and we have no idea what he'll be like. Cecil is trying to re-invent himself and get back to 2010 form.
The organization and some in the media seem to think Lind can rebound and play like he did in 2009 and for the first part of past season, apparently he got hurt partway through and tried to play through it, but never got fully healthy. We'll see what a full year of Brett Lawrie and Colby Rasmus brings. J.P Arencebia in his second year can focus more on hitting and less on learning to catch in the bigs. Edwin can just hit in the DH spot and not worry about throwing balls into the stands, he finished the year on fire and was one of the best bats on the team once he moved to DH. *INSERT- I actually think we could see Edwin rip the ball all year and be that middle of the order protection for Bautista. This is based on his positional splits.-* Snider and Thames are big question marks and Kelly Johnson should at the very least be an upgrade offensively on Hill.
Bautista and Escobar hopefully just keep on being great. I think the offense is o.k *with significant potential to be great* and we'll see once we get into the season how some of these questions play out, but to me the starting rotation is the bigger concern. Love the new look pen, I think it'll be good and maybe great. Rumors are flying around that AA is looking for another solid late inning reliever.
I don't think this is the year for the Jays unless absolutely everything goes right. The Yanks I think are the team to beat, Boston is still Boston, the Rays just keep churning out great prospects and now the Tigers, Rangers and Angels are all very good after adding Fielder, Darvish and Pujols/Wilson respectively. The American Leauge is looking very tough and it will be for a long time. We're banking on our prospect/player development, hopefully these guys come up and at least a couple of them are stars and then we can make the big trade/big free agent signing and go win a world series.
Anyway just thought it was funny that he asks a one line question and gets this in response....
Banter away.
