BP - Rasmus vs. Cespedes
Executives voted on who they would rather have. The result: Cespedes, 6-2.
Talk about "what have you done for me lately?"
One exec even voted on taking Cespedes over Rasmus, Drew Stubbs, BJ Upton, Chris Young, and Adam Jones. I'm also guessing that this exec is Ned Colletti.

Meh, Cespedes is a blank screen that you can project your wildest dreams, hopes, and aspiration upon. Colby isn’t anymore. Really just as simple as that I think, betcha that if BP were to ask the same question a year from now they’ll get mostly different answers.

you're right. I don't get why everyone's so high on his "potential"
Next year would be when most players would enter their prime (still a couple years away for Colby). So what he gives you now is what he gives you, Colby will at least give you hope he improves.

Cespedes over BJ Upton?
Cespedes is only a year younger and Upton’s been worth 20 WAR over the past five seasons… I don’t see how one could POSSIBLY justify taking Cespedes
Yeah
I could understand it if contract considerations were in play, since he has oly one year of control left with little surplus value…but even the, Cespedes is a FA, which theoretically means there really be any expected surplus value (though ex post there might be)
In a purely hypothetical situation
if the Jays were to sign Cespedes, would he have options available allowing them to put him in AAA for the season (not that I think this will or should happen, but it seems the only way that the Jays would be interested in him)?
Yes
He’ll sign a major league contract, so he’ll right on the 40 man – like Hechavarria did. Then you have 3 option years. And I believe there might be a 4th, because both will have less than 5 professional seasons after 3 option years are used, though I’m not entirely sure if older IFAs are given this same treatment (though I’m not aware of or recalling a CBA provision that would suggest otherwise, and I’ve read through most of it multiple times)
Hech didn't VISA issues
He wanted to get US citizenship, which apparently requires a minimum amount of consecutive days spent in the US (I think 18 months, since Hech signed in April 2010, so Sept 2011 wasn’t long enough). This could be a hang-up against signing Cespedes, if the Jays were interested and he wanted US citizenship.
It wouldn’t be a problem with Soler, since he would need a umber of years of minor league development – they just wouldn;t be able to assign him to Vancouver (short season A, so it’s doubtful they would in any event)
