Blue Jays DFA Darin Mastroianni

The Jays have made the signing of Francisco Cordero official and, to make room on the 40-man roster, have designated Darin Mastroianni for assignment.

Darin got into 1 game with the Jays, last year, going 0 for 2 with a sac bunt. I kind of like the guy, I think he'd be a fine fourth outfielder, for some team, but the Jays have plenty of options for that role.

las vegas?

i think theres a pretty good chance he goes to vegas

by Brett4PM on Feb 1, 2012 1:45 PM EST reply actions

Has to clear waivers

If he does, then they can outright him off the 40 man and send him to Vegas

by MjwW on Feb 1, 2012 1:51 PM EST up reply actions

Yep kinda hope someone picks him up for a n MLB bench soot. Davis is the perfect fit for us and its not a hard spot to fill once Davis’ contract ends.

like who?

I think Darin is a good fir to take Davis role after this season, who else did u have in mind?

by Brett4PM on Feb 1, 2012 1:57 PM EST up reply actions

I don't agree

Mastro had a good 2010 but an absolutely brutal 2011 in a tremendously hitter-friendly league at an advanced age. I don’t think he’s anything more than depth FOR the 4th OF

by benk on Feb 1, 2012 2:03 PM EST up reply actions

fair

so you see us signing someone to fill Davis role or going without that speed menace on the bases?

by Brett4PM on Feb 1, 2012 2:05 PM EST up reply actions

we already have Davis

so he’s likely to fill Davis’ role.

lots of things can/will happen before 2013 – who knows how many of Bautista, Rasmus, Snider, Thames, Gose, Sierra will still be with the Jays and/or playing the positions they played in 2011? who knows

by benk on Feb 1, 2012 2:13 PM EST up reply actions

Even if we didn’t have Davis we’d still have McCoy whose pretty damn fast… not that it matters that much since even if Gose makes little progress with the bat I imagine he could still do as good or better a job then Rajai. Better D, Better Arm, Better Speed.

by Parallex on Feb 1, 2012 3:55 PM EST up reply actions

McCoy? I’d rather have Mastro Oil!

by hrv2010 on Feb 1, 2012 6:10 PM EST via iPhone app up reply actions

McCoy is more valuable in Las Vegas anyway

They need all the pitching they can get (see: Lane, Jason; 2011 pitching performances)!

by MjwW on Feb 1, 2012 6:32 PM EST up reply actions

lol

mccoy isnt nearly the base stealer mastro or especially davis is, he doesnt play the outfield well. and why would we put our #2 prospect in a 4th ourfielder role? not a chance

by Brett4PM on Feb 1, 2012 6:50 PM EST up reply actions

however

McCoy can play all positions (I’m not forgetting pitching either), not just the outfield. That kind of utility would be more useful than a 5th outfielder

by siggian on Feb 1, 2012 11:55 PM EST up reply actions

not particularly well, though

McCoy is pretty much the definition of replacement level

by benk on Feb 2, 2012 12:20 AM EST up reply actions

I said nothing about the quality of his playing

If you think about it, the typical utility player is literally a replacement player. That is, he’s replacing a regular who is not in the lineup for one reason or another.

by siggian on Feb 2, 2012 9:11 AM EST up reply actions

ya sure

but it is a nice luxury to have a real stolen base threat as one of your guys off the bench. And of mccoy is our extra outfielder in ’13 then we most likely dont have tat luxury. I highly doubt Mccoy makes the team this year because of the Vizquel signing

by Brett4PM on Feb 2, 2012 3:03 PM EST up reply actions

most rosters are full now though

I think he has a good chance to get through

by Brett4PM on Feb 1, 2012 1:55 PM EST up reply actions

I agree

There’s at least a decent chance, since most teams have similar type guys and will be loathe to take up a 40 man spot for him.

by MjwW on Feb 1, 2012 2:00 PM EST up reply actions

I doubt he clears waivers

and besides, it’s best for him to move on and try to win a spot somewhere where he’ll get playing time.

by voislav on Feb 1, 2012 1:54 PM EST reply actions

best for him

not for the Jays though, doesnt hurt having him in Vegs

by Brett4PM on Feb 1, 2012 1:56 PM EST reply actions

Not so sure about that

There’s a limited number of roster spots for outfielders in Vegas and plenty of bodies to fill them, not including Darin.

You have Francisco, Thames, Snider, and Davis and realistically, only two of them are going to make the Jays roster. You also have Gose pushing up from AA. The Jays may want him to repeat or they might feel he’s ready for AAA.

by siggian on Feb 1, 2012 2:06 PM EST up reply actions

The Jays have indicated that they’ll carry 5 outfielders, so I’m not sure that’s a fair statement at all.

Gose will be CF, let’s assume the loser of THames/Snider in LF. Sierra in RF, I guess. So there’s still limited ABs available

by MjwW on Feb 1, 2012 2:09 PM EST up reply actions   1 recs

That said

I still think there’s a chance they carry Thames and Snider as part of a large 1B/DH/LF platoon, in which case Francisco is either traded or released. Which would open up a spot for Mastroianni

Also, I guess it’s possible Gose goes back to AA, but there really hasn’t been any indication of this.

by MjwW on Feb 1, 2012 2:13 PM EST up reply actions

I'm looking for the reference

This Griffin article implies it, I’m looking for a more explicit statement which I seem to recall

by MjwW on Feb 1, 2012 2:22 PM EST up reply actions

I thought so

I just wasn’t able to find a direct quote when I did a quick search

by MjwW on Feb 1, 2012 6:04 PM EST up reply actions

I don't believe him

it’s something he has to say to not harm the trade value of whomever he ships out

by khaleeji on Feb 2, 2012 2:20 AM EST up reply actions

i’ve read or heard AA say that a few times. 5 OF with Davis and Francisco on the bench with Snider/Thames making the roster.

Mastroianni will probably be in AA if they want him to start and get at-bats.

by Sniderlover on Feb 1, 2012 8:30 PM EST up reply actions

3 of them will be on the team

in vegas you have the loser of Thames/Snider, Gose and maybe Sierra? Darin would fit ion nicely to share at bats

by Brett4PM on Feb 1, 2012 2:09 PM EST up reply actions

he will probably clear. Struggled last year in PCL and he is 26 years old.

either way…. meh.

by Sniderlover on Feb 1, 2012 2:00 PM EST reply actions

agree

i dont think anyone is heartbroken if he leaves but he has the potential to be a useful 4th guy, much like loewen so to see them both leave in the span of a few months would kinda suck

by Brett4PM on Feb 1, 2012 2:02 PM EST up reply actions

haha

the kids here probably wont get that reference. zit remedy!

Darin To The Mets

Just a guess…that is if Ricccardi can convince his boss to pick him up. He prolly makes their 40 roster on merit.
