NEED ONE MORE PERSON FOR OUR FANTASY LEAGUE

Someone (I think it was Minor Leaguer) mentioned a fantasy league style where the goal is to be the worst team in the league. I thought it was interesting, so I was thinking of setting up a league like that. I'm hoping to make it an auction-draft non-keeper, H2H format.

If anyone's interested, just put your email address in the comments or just email me at khpodo0201@yahoo.ca.

Planning on it being a 12 team league. Right now we've got benk, wuckfestern, aarne13, Rhinos, Gerse, jaysfan100, Hobbes, and me Still need 5 more people.

This is how the scoring will work (with a min. 20 IP per week, for now) (they are ALL subject to change):

Batters Stat Category Value
At Bats (AB) 5.1
Hits (H) -12
Doubles (2B) -6.4
Triples (3B) -12.6
Home Runs (HR) -18
Stolen Bases (SB) -4.5
Caught Stealing (CS) 6
Walks (BB) -6

Hit By Pitch (HBP)

Strikeouts (K)

-6

1.65

Pitchers Stat Category Value
Innings Pitched (IP) -1
Saves (SV) -1.75
Home Runs (HR) 14.5
Walks (BB) 4.5
Hit Batters (HBP) 4.5
Strikeouts (K) -2.5

Holds (HLD)

Hits (H)

-1.5

2.4

Using this scoring, the best (worst?) 2011 position players look like this:

20203858jujuywnt_medium

and pitchers look like this:

I’d take Brian Tallet as the first pitcher and Betancourt as the hitter.

is Brian Tallet going to get enough IP

to make him worth taking as the #1 pitcher?

I think we're going to have do this in ESPN

Yahoo doesn’t allow me to set minimum # of AB/IP

Really?

I know when I used to be H2H ahoo leagues back 5 year ago, you could set a minimum number of innings or you fofeited each category

by MjwW on Feb 19, 2012 10:31 PM EST up reply actions

oh right

i forgot Roto has IP as a stat

okay, I can get the min. IP down

but it won’t let me do min. AB/PA.

by Pikachu on Feb 19, 2012 10:36 PM EST up reply actions

hmmm...

So we can have a min. IP limit, but no AB/PA limit… Maybe we should give negative points for per AB/PA?

Why are saves and holds positive?

Is it making fun of their actual value?

by MjwW on Feb 20, 2012 7:11 AM EST reply actions

FYI

I love that the other pitching is reverse FIP. Quite ingenious.

by MjwW on Feb 20, 2012 7:12 AM EST up reply actions

I think I should make it so that the scoring is backwards

you get positive points for AB, CS, and for pitchers, HR, BB, and HBP. Everything else is negative points

Can someone help?

I have to set the scoring so that people don’t leave blank roster spots. The problem is that in the scoring system that we used in masterkembo’s league, even below-average or average performances would at least give out some positive value, which would be negative in ours.

Meaning that I’d have to give a higher incentive for giving AB and innings. I’ve changed the scoring a bit already, but I want to hear some opinions. Does the numbers look okay at the moment?

by Pikachu on Feb 20, 2012 10:04 AM EST reply actions

do* the numbers

His 2011 wRC+ is 26

by Pikachu on Feb 20, 2012 10:04 AM EST up reply actions

I'm trying to get my head around the incentives...

The goal is to have people pick awful players and get awful performances, but to also force people to go with merely bad performances versus leaving the spots blank. Let’s take an average-below average player…6K/9, 4BB/9, 1HR/9…per 9 innings, that pitcher accumulates 9(-4)6(-2)1(13)+4(3) = -23 points. So once you have your min 20 IP, you’d rather bench a bad pitcher than have him accumulate points, since it will likely be negative. I’d torque back the negative on IP…maybe to -1…this would make a bad pitcher around 0 points (slightly positive).

PS – will it be weekly roster setting? or daily? weekly could reduce perverse incentives, cause you have to make sure to get to your 20, and then once you pass that, you can’t just sit guys.

by MjwW on Feb 20, 2012 10:57 AM EST up reply actions

Likewise

That big negative number for saves means people will not pick closers at all…even if you pick a crappy one, the -5 for saves will be too much to overcome (this may be the goal – have us all pick crappy relievers and long men on crappier teams)

by MjwW on Feb 20, 2012 10:59 AM EST up reply actions

I see

alright, then I should make saves and holes less detrimental

I dont' know about daily lineups

I don’t mind it, but isn’t it too much work for some people?

yeah

I just get bored. and fantasy sports is about making smart moves, not making the most moves, IMO

Every fantasy league I've ever been in with daily changes

(and it’s only a few) has ended up being a real gongshow.

by MjwW on Feb 20, 2012 8:54 PM EST up reply actions

Alright, I'm experimenting a little bit

Does this look alright for the worst hitters?

This is the formula I used:
(3*AB) + (-6.4*H) + (-3.1*2B) + (-6*3B) + (-10*HR) + (-3*BB) + (-3*HBP) + (-1.9*SB) + (5*CS)

His 2011 wRC+ is 26

by Pikachu on Feb 20, 2012 11:53 AM EST reply actions

I would add in K

Seems to me that Dunn + Wells should be higher…the reason Ichiro and Pierre lead the list is because they don’t strike out much, and they actually had much better seasons than Dunn+Wells

by MjwW on Feb 20, 2012 11:58 AM EST up reply actions

the problem with that is

then guys like Stubbs who strikes out a tone gets a lot of points

His 2011 wRC+ is 26

by Pikachu on Feb 20, 2012 12:25 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, this is a problem

I can get Dunn to be the worst (best?) player in the league, but Stubbs is right behind him.

His 2011 wRC+ is 26

by Pikachu on Feb 20, 2012 12:36 PM EST up reply actions

Hmm

Well, Dunn doesn;t have to be the worst…I’d put some value on Ks though…maybe 0.5? It’s not a big deal if you omit them completely, because I can see how it could cause problems

by MjwW on Feb 20, 2012 12:41 PM EST up reply actions

The other thing to verify

Is if the totals for pitchers and hitters are roughly right vis-a-vis each other. For example, if the worst pitcher last year would only score 100, and worst batter 500, then hitters are probably too valued (completel hypothetical)

by MjwW on Feb 20, 2012 12:02 PM EST up reply actions

here's a revised one

formula = 3*((1.7*AB) + (-4*H) + (-2.8*2B) + (-4.2*3B) + (-6*HR) + (-2*BB) + (-2*HBP) + (-1.5*SB) + (2*CS) + (0.55*SO))

It’s a bit messy, but I like the results in this one.

As for Yahoo vs ESPN: Yahoo has a pre-built format this year for exactly what you’re doing, you should take a gander to see how they incentivize suckage.
(I admit to not having read any of the previous comments, so it’s possible that that’s already been mentioned)

by Gerse on Feb 20, 2012 12:52 PM EST reply actions

oh cool

hall of shame. The format’s nice, but they do have some silly stuff, like -100 for hitting for cycle. Maybe I could revise it a little?

His 2011 wRC+ is 26

by Pikachu on Feb 20, 2012 1:08 PM EST up reply actions

yeah

they have Andrus and Starlin Castro as the two worst players last year. Should revise a little.

by Pikachu on Feb 20, 2012 1:10 PM EST up reply actions

I likes generally what you had

Maybe tweak it, but it seemed roughly right – certainly the list it produced was good

by MjwW on Feb 20, 2012 1:25 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah

It’s just a template, you can make whatever changes you want to it.

by Gerse on Feb 20, 2012 3:28 PM EST up reply actions

And this is what I got for pitching

formula: = (-1*IP) + (-1.75*SV) + (2.4*H) + (14.5*HR) + (4.5*(BB+HBP)) + (-2.5*K) + (-1.5*HLD)

Avg. 216.87, high of 972.3, low of -167.8.

Ehhhhh. The results look okay but I’m ambivalent on the values.

Do you have a young, talented cost controlled player having a down year who's "attitude" has cased problems with an aging player or manager?

Don't worry, I Alex Anthopoulos will take him off your hands, I'll even give you some moderately useful veterans that will "help you make a playoff run".

I tweet sometimes
