Becasue that's the end of the off season
last sorta big FA to sign and it’s now Meh till ST starts. And EJax is meh if he isn’t part of a multi-player trade.
Also, meh.

I second the "meh"
Only a one year deal and it’s to the Nationals where he won’t make a huge difference. Sure, they’re better but are they good enough to take on Philly and Atlanta and even the revamped Marlins. Probably not. Plus NL, so meh.
Hic sunt fortuna dracones
There is only 1 "n" in Hutchison
Strasburg, Zimmerman, Gonzalez, Jackson
That could be a dirty rotation. Too bad they’re in the same division as the Phillies and the Braves
Compilation of various comments I've seen on the interwebs these last few days:
Rogers are cheap owners. They have horrible service when I call to talk about my cell phone and they don’t care about the Blue Jays winning because they won’t sign PROVEN veterans. Can’t believe they couldn’t spend 8-12 million on a starter that went to the WORLD SERIES last year while they spent crap loads of money on Kelly Johnson. They could have used the 8-12 million to sign Darvish! I have been a fan for 35 years but no more! Jays will never win. Only suckers accept mediocrity.

This, however is genius

"Only suckers accept mediocrity"?
Um… Leafs. 67.

They will spend when the time is right
I’d rather watch Hutch or Deck get it figured out than have a stopgap pitcher.

this makes it seem like they can only spend $ one time
…and it better be the right time otherwise mediocrity is sure to follow for decades.

I don't interpret it that way
More like they will only have one opportunity to take a massive jump in payroll such that the team is no longer profitable (based on the previous years revenue). If they take that jump in payroll, they better be in a position to receive playoff revenue, or else they will be forced to cut back on spending. They will (well, should) always be allowed to spend as long as they are still projected to hit their bottom line.

I disagree with this view
I don’t think payroll is just going to shoot up the way it did ca. 2005 with big FA signings. I see more of a gradual increase – rising revenues, rising payroll, etc. Payroll is going to rise anyway naturally, just through having younger players going from pre-arb to arb1, arb2, arb3, etc. That’s what happened this year – higher payroll, without significant additions.
I don’t see it jumping by something like 25M in one offseason. One big FA would do that, but I don’t see it
I could definitely see that happening, and it will happen like that for the most part
though I would not discount the possibility of a fairly large jump in payroll AFTER their first or second appearance in the post-season.

Fair enough
But at that point, you’ve got already got the playoff revenues (not to mention, more importantly, in all likelihood, much increased attendance so regular season revenues) such that it’s not pushing them into the red.
I meant it as more of a opportunity cost
More than financial. I think 5 years down the road we will be better off letting Hutch or Deck develop than have Edwin for a 1 year shot at MAYBE making playoffs. If AA though Edwin would have pushed us into playoffs, he would have handed out a 1 year deal for whatever easily.
but really I'm not too torn up about it
same with the Manny thing… basically no risk, if the Jays think he’s worth the roster spot and the PAs, great. if not, also great
I'm not too torn up about either
If we got him or Manny I wouldn’t be jumping for joy but I certainly wouldn’t be abandoning the Jays. (as a fan)
Oh no to them it's fully empty and bone-dry until Rogers spend $150 million and the guarantee a World Series berth

I'm no fan of Rogers (the corp)
But I think a lot of people are mixing the hatred for the cable/tv/cellular/phone company with the team.
If you think the rage against the Jays is bad… wait till Rogers/Bell takeover the Leafs.

Just got crushed with news that I have an exam during the Jays home opener I was going to.
And 3 others that first week as well. They had all of April and they squish mine during that first week. This sucks
"And I'm like forget Yuuuuuu"
It's worth a try.
Funny thing is that it’s the only night exam. A noon one would have been fine. Could have still got there. I feel like some evil baseball god is watching me punch walls right now just laughing at me.
"And I'm like forget Yuuuuuu"
Too bad they traded away Halladay
Or you could’ve gotten a Doctor’s note
