how is this not green yet, seriously.
“Oh god no” was what I said out loud when I saw this

whatever
if the Jays FO thinks he can be a valuable bat, then I guess there’s little else to do but trust them
Well if they do sign Manny they can prove that Rogers isn't cheap

Blah.
Wouldn’t mind him as a bench bat, but we don’t have room if we’re taking 5 OF. Maybe he’d take Francisco’s spot.
What if you could get him at league minimum ...
or for slightly more?
Would it be worth it ever? Maybe you could make the argument Matt Kemp got better because he learned something from Manny’s time in LA? I know it’s a reach… Perhaps Manny might be able to teach a young Brett Lawrie or some of our other youngsters something….
For $500,000 would the Jays consider signing him??? Honestly, I just think this is a tactic to try and drive his price up or something like that. Can’t see him in a Jays uniform…
Yet, stranger things have happened, friends. Have there been any Ninja sighting lately?
I don't want him teaching Lawrie anything.
But as I say, keep Francisco for 50 games, and then have Manny on the bench for cheap? It really doesn’t sound that bad to me. He’s a cancer, all that..but if he hits .280/.350/.450 off the bench?
Manny was a superlative hitter for a very long time
and was great as recently as 2010. do I think he’ll be that good in 2012? I honestly have no idea. but if the Jays do, then hopefully they’re correct
He works very hard at hitting, studies opposing pitchers
He’d be good for the hitters but I’d still not want him
I blog, therefore I am.
What happens if Edwin gets injured?
Manny for a real cheap signing might give the Jays a good veteran option?
I am playing Devil’sAdvocate i’m not saying they should do it but maybe that is the logic?
Still, I’m with you, I don’t think it jives with what Chef AA is trying to cook up …

I'm pretty sure EE doesn't play with fireworks anymore.

I just don't see
Why Toronto would pay him to be a part time DH and, more importantly, why he’d come to Toronto to be a part time DH
And please don’t tell me anyone has aspirations of him in LF
neither
snider and thames!

Are the Jays paying him though?
I thought his contract wasn’t guaranteed? As in there’s the possibly of him getting released. If they’re actually considering him as a DH option in any light, then yeah obviously I’d rather take a chance on Manny
The chef's plan has shown some diversity lately
I’m not sure I like this signing either, but AA’s recent signings of Oliver, Cordero and Vizquel.. and even the re-trade for Frasor show that he’s willing to supplement the core with some “veterans” to add some balance, motivation and perspective perhaps. The ‘92-’93 Jays did this too, with the trade for Ricky Henderson and the signing of Paul Molitor for example.
Manny doesn't really want to play for the Jays
Think about it. He’d have to smuggle his drugs across a border after every home and road trip! :)
I dont really want him
I guess I could see Torontos point of view. He could be a good cheap bench bat, possibly even another trade chip if he hits well
This reminds me of those rumours a few years ago.
The ones claiming that we’re going after Barry Bonds.
What's the downside?
Is it because he’s a goofball?
Excuse me, do these effectively hide my thunder?
It's cause he tested for PEDs not once, but twice
I don’t want anyone using PEDs on the Jays. If the Jays win, it should be without the need of an asterisk beside the win column.
Even in a Jays uniform, I’d still boo him.
Right..
But you can assume that MLB will be testing him routinely now that he has tested positive. If he’s to do any winning anywhere, it will be without the use of PEDs, and so no asterisk will be required. It’s the years before the positive tests that are in question, if any.
Eh
Dont see whats the big deal. Id like to have him.

The one thing Manny is not a goofball about is his hitting. If one could distill that into a player that would be great
I dunno about the rest of the package. I’m hoping that he goes somewhere else, but if AA does sign him I hope that they know what they’re doing.

Truthfully
They’re talking a very low salary, in the neighborhood of $1,000,000. He wants a second chance. He could DH. Who knows. Low risk, high reward if he keeps his head on straight. Could be good protection for Bautista. I dunno, if he doesn’t pan out, cut him.
*lol* at those who don't want Manny!
He is a better bat than everyone currently on the roster except Jose – even then he has been a good for a lot longer than Jose. PED’s or not. He would be the best protection Jose has had….Ever! Do you think Brewers fans no longer want Ryan Braun because he tested positive? I would gladly take him on a 1 to 2 year deal to DH for this team and help some of the young guys get better and win some games.

He'd be more like a circus attraction.
Everywhere the Jays go, all anyone would want to talk about is Manny being Manny. And I think you’re overestimating his bat.
by Defense Counts! on Feb 4, 2012 3:38 AM EST up reply actions
You know he's 40, right?
He’s not going to be the same guy who destroyed Toronto in his prime.
He was terrible with the White Sox in 10 and didn’t show much with the Rays in 11 (yes I know SSS but it was horrible.) How much “protection” is he going to provide for Jose?
All I see is a declining slugger who would eat up a roster spot. At best I could see him hit like what Vlad Guerrero did with the Orioles last year whose production fell off a cliff in a hitters ball park with a 733 OPS which is horrible for a DH. FYI, the current projected DH, EE, had an OPS of 787 and that’s with a lousy 1st 3 months of the season.

Yes, let's completely ignore his 233 PAs as a Dodger in which he hit .311/.405/.510

How good is he really going to be after that layoff?
I’d consider a Minor League contract and invite to spring training, but no guaranteed roster spot.

by Damaso's Burnt Shirt on Feb 4, 2012 9:27 AM EST up reply actions
that's cherrypicking
you can’t just ignore his good numbers as a Dodger and only look at his bad numbers as a White Sox
His 2011 wRC+ is 26
He's different than Vlad though
Vlad’s power is his greatest asset. Manny can take a walk and get on base at a high rate. I think it’s almost a certainty that he’d have the 2nd highest OBP on the team.
Yes you are correct, but how sharp is that eye going to be after a year off?

doesn't cost much to find out
He also has 2 months (50 games) (or even 3-4 months if you count Spring), to get it back.
that's exactly how I feel
I mean, maybe he goes crazy and writes “sinking ship” on the locker room whiteboard, but if he does you eat $1M and cut him. and maybe he posts a .400 OBA in a DH role
Exactly!
I guess people would rather save 1M and not find out if 40 year old Manny is better than Adam Lind and EE! I just don’t see how we can lose. I vividly remember a number of disappointed bloggers asking why the Jays didnt take a chance on Manny after finding out he signed with the Rays for 1M. We have a second chance, why not take it.
I wouldn't want any player that tested positive on my team
FWIW I don’t think Braun knowingly used them, but that’s just opinion.

If we hear about it, it is not going to happen.
My mantra now regarding all Blue Jay rumors with AA at the helm. lol
I am the one who knocks.
I don't get all the hate, to be honest
-He got caught cheating twice: A lot of other ballplayers have. (OK. Maybe not twice, but still…)
-He’s goofy: That can be a little fun, no? What matters is what he does with the bat.
-He’s old: A lot of old sluggers still do well, especially in limited roles.
-He takes up a roster spot: If he sucks, he doesn’t have to.
-He’s suspended for 50 games: It gives him more time to get in shape and work with the Jays in Florida to get ready. He doesn’t have to go to regular Spring training, the place, in my opinion, where his presence would likely be the bigger distraction.
The Dodgers are paying him, I think, $10M or so this year? He’s probably willing to play for under $1M. He just wants to play. It’s not about the money, because he already has that. That’s kinda neat.
If the Jays think he can hit, I don’t see much downside. I don’t think I’ll convince anybody here, but I kind of hope Manny gets a chance to.

Me too. green him.

Don't agree with all the the points made
Actually, less than half, but agree with the conclusion. If he can help, great. If not, little cost. As for the steroids, I’ve long since stopped caring about the moralizing.

Exactly...
Wouldn’t mind taking a chance on a 1M dollar contract for 1 year. If Manny helps, good stuff. If he doesn’t, DFA him.
Counterarguement...
The counter is that much of his hitting success can be attributed to PED’s(if you believe in that). The conclusion one could draw is that this ends with either him not hitting because he’s off the juice….or he goes back on the juice to hit and gets caught. I don’t like either scenario.
Umm yes, please!!!
He OBPed over 400 in 2009 and 2010. We need more guys that can get on base. The only question I would have is should we leave EE at DH and have him play at LF over Snider/Thames.
Didn't he like beat his wife
And do PED’s?
I think all the negativity emulating from him makes me rather us don’t get him, regardless of how cheap he comes.
by Mike Andrew on Feb 5, 2012 12:05 AM EST reply actions 1 recs
he's also one of the greatest hitters ever
I don’t know about you, but I want the Jays to get the best players possible
So you'd pay a guy who beats his wife and uses PED's for god knows how long?
I’m open to making this club better but to me, a marginal short term improvement that likely won’t get us anywhere isn’t worth a minor league contract.
if the Jays' talent evaluators thought he was worth it, yes
just as I wouldn’t mind having Jason Kidd, Shawne Merriman nor Ryan Braun on my favourite teams
It's just about impossible
for any player to not be worth a minor league contract
ORDINAL TEAM RANKINGS ARE NOT ROBUST OR USEFUL ANALYTICAL TOOLS
I'm of the belief he would literally wreck the team
On and off the field
literally?
as in he’d cause the team bus to crash?
you’re really closed-minded sometimes Mike. it’s very frustrating.
Okay, lets give the drug taking wife beating baseball player on our team
And truly believe that he will not affect chemistry on anything in the slightest.
What kind of output do you expect from Manny? Ever since he hit the wrong side of 35 he really hasn’t been doing that well. I think its very likely that Edwin could outperform 35 year old Manny, not even counting how much better that would be for the teams future. I am high on Edwin though (as you may know considering you know me so well)
by Mike Andrew on Feb 5, 2012 9:40 PM EST up reply actions 1 recs
Fine
But 35 was now quite a few years ago. All I’m saying is the guy is going to stop producing one day, and after sitting out so long he may have lost another step/contact…
I’m willing to trust the talent evaluators enough (they watched him BP) that if we sign him I trust he can still hit decently. I still doubt hes anything more than a replacement level DH at best.
he was excellent in '10
you don’t think there’s any way he could be better than a .330 wOBA (replacement level DH)? despite posting a .396 wOBA in ’09 and .382 in ’10?
Didn't you just post on another thread the other day saying you wouldn't mind if the team decided to sign Manny?
His 2011 wRC+ is 26
Yes
I wouldn’t stop being a fan if we signed Manny but I wouldn’t jump for joy either. I was a fan of signing Manny a year or two ago when he was considering coming here. I just think he may be too old to contribute now.
