Blue Jays 5 Rays 8
Drew Hutchison has had 7 major league starts now. In the first four it seemed like he would have a good game, expect for 1 bad inning. His last 2 starts, he avoided the bad inning, going 6 in each game and allowing just 1 run in each. Tonight we were back to the one bad inning.
Drew's first 3 innings, he allowed 2 hits, 1 a solo home run, but he was looking pretty good. The 4th was terrible. It started with a Luke Scott double. A popped up bunt, that Drew made a nice catch on, gave him an out. Then a double, wild pitch, ground ball that Brett Lawrie tried to make a great play on, throwing home, just a little high. A single and homer later and Drew had a 5 run inning. Drew is going to have learn to avoid that inning. I'm sure he will as some point in the future. I'm just not sure that this will be the year.
In total, Drew pitched 4 innings with 7 hits, 6 earned, no walks, 3 k. Not a good showing. Evan Crawford pitched 2 innings, giving up a run in each. Luis Perez and Carlos Villanueva had a scoreless inning.
The Jays tried to make a comeback. We scored 4 runs against Matt Moore in the 5th (helped along by a Rays error, how many errors have they made in games against us?) and Yan Gomes hit a solo homer in the 6th, but it wasn't enough.
We had 7 hits, 3 for Jose Bautista and 4 walks, but we also struck out 10 times.
Jay of the Day? Well, Edwin Encarnacion had the number, .140, but most of that was because of an error made on a ball he hit that got us a couple of runs, so I can't give him it. Jose Bautista went 3 for 4, with RBI, he only had a .041 WPA but I'm going to give him the JoD anyway. Suckage? Drew gets the Towers Award for his -.274. And Crawford gets a Batista for his -.104. JP gets the Hinske for his -.140 on an 0 for 4.
And Brett Lawrie had another moment with an umpire. Brett was on first, Yan Gomes hit a fly, Brett was running on the pitch, slide into second, then realized he had go back to first. The umpire ruled that Brett should have touched the bag again before heading back to first. I don't know, I think that since he didn't past 2nd he should have been ok. The umpire didn't. Brett disagreed, but he controlled his temper better.
