TEAM NOTES:

BP contributor Jordon Gorosh was in attendance for De Jong's start this week and passed along a few notes on twitter:

De Jong was 89-90 in the first, and 87-90 later in the game. He showed some sink, but the secondaries (CH/CB) were underwhelming, as was the arm speed. It's only one data point, and others have had good things to say about his secondaries this winter, but as a projection kid you would have hoped he ticked up a bit by now.

D.J. Davis, who added 11 strikeouts to his herculean total this week, was getting good reads and looked great in CF. If he was doing stuff like this, I'm inclined to believe Gorosh.

He also ran a 3.85 to first, which is a little silly, even if it was on a jailbreak from the left side.

Mitch Nay is doing some good things. For a guy whose ability to make contact was questioned, he sure is making a lot of contact (striking out just 11.9%) and he's drawing a fair number of walks (8.8%). Unfortunately, the big BP power isn't showing up in games at all, as he's only homered twice in 53 games. The MWL is a tough place to hit for power, but kids who have 70 raw are supposed to be hitting 'em out where ever they are. He's still got time, but for a guy who might end up at 1B or in an outfield corner, it's going to have to play in games eventually. The good news is he got smoked two balls off 2013 first round pick Braden Shipley this week and an AL scout had this to say (via Bob Elliot, Canadian Baseball Network):

"The other day I was looking at their power numbers. Ryan Schimpf and Dan Johnson have the most homers. I'll take this guy when all is said and done. Our area guy in Arizona had a big number on him."

Charlie Caskey's source in the org also passed along some notes from extend spring this week; some of it good, some of it bad:

While assistant GM Tony LaCava made Tom Robson's arm issues sound minor, Caskey's source says the situation is much more dire, and that there's a better than even chance that the RHP will need Tommy John. I'll hold out for something more concrete, but that certainly doesn't inspire confidence.

Caskey's source believes Alford, who has looked great in extended, will start in Vancouver, along with Franklin Barreto (which would put Urena in line to start the year in the Appy League, with Gudino starting in the GCL as Barreto did last season).

Miguel Castro has "been lights out," and Jairo Labourt has been "dealing" since being sent down. The latter should be back in Lansing soon in his estimation.

TEAM NOTES:

Daniel Norris continues to shove. Interestingly, Keith Law released his top 25 yesterday, and when asked if Norris was considered, he simply answered "no." That's probably not an indictment of Norris as much as it is an endorsement of how good the talent that actually made it is (although Law has usually been the low man when it comes to Norris, going back to his amateur days). Either way, if Norris continues to make strides with the command and pitch like this when he eventually makes it to New Hampshire, it'll be hard to keep him off the upper end of top prospect lists come year end.

Chris King saw Pompey recently (May 19th; I'm cheating here a bit) and loved most of what he saw, however, he thought the swing from the left side was ahead of the swing from the right side at this point. Looking at Pompey's splits paints an interesting picture:

Pompey's done more damage from the right side, but he's also striking out twice as much... while also drawing twice as many walks. It'll be something to watch going forward.

TEAM NOTES:

Not a great week for Aaron Sanchez. He failed to record a single out in his start last Saturday, walking four, hitting, and having six runs charged against him. According to a scout who spoke with Bob Elliot, the ump certainly didn't help, as the zone was small all game. The fact that the New Hampshire staff as a whole gave ended up having 12 in the walk column certainly gives credence to that idea (although there was only walk issued on the Portland side). Still, this wouldn't be the first time Sanchez lost the zone completely, and to his credit he didn't blame anyone but himself for the poor effort.
