Season over? There's the door.

For a while now, I've been convinced that if the MLB standings were determined purely by overall fan optimism, the Blue Jays would sit very comfortably in last place.

And not by a little.

I'm not even going to try and dance around it. I'm getting quite sick of people who always throw in the towel on the Blue Jays' season... and not even after every loss... after every run they give up. After every error. (Thankfully it hasn't escalated to "after every pitch that ends up being called a ball" yet)

I see it all the time on my Blue Jay twitter feed, with just about every run the Jays give up. People whining that the season is over. That the Blue Jays "can't do anything right" or "are the worst team in the history of the MLB". If you've lost track of how many times you've seen people say the season was over, it's okay, I have as well.

I'm not going to say I'm not guilty in tweeting irrational stuff myself, but not once have I declared the season over after every single error or loss.

If they've lost the game, say, in the first inning, why are they even playing the rest of the game? If the season is "over", why are they still playing?

Several weeks back I wrote this fanpost. And nothing has changed, aside from the Blue Jays' record in the standings. Why is it whenever the Blue Jays win, fans say "it isn't a real win", or "they only won because the other team gave it to them". But when the Jays lose, "this season is over!", or "we're never going to win another game again!"

The media isn't helping either. When the Blue Jays were in first place by 6 games, all I ever saw was "are the Blue Jays for real?". It ticked (and is still ticking) me off to the point that I wrote that fanpost in the above link. Now the Blue Jays are BEHIND by 6 games, and suddenly media and fans --- sorry, "fans" --- are jumping on the Blue Jays with all sorts of (sometimes unrealistic) criticism and saying they'll never win another game again.

Am I being a naive optimist? Some might say so. But you can't call all of the Blue Jays' wins "flukes", their losses "real", and expect to call yourself realistic. You can't complain game in and game out about this team and call yourself a "diehard fan".

Also, I want to take this friendly reminder for those of you who are fans of multiple teams in different sports: Your frustrations towards one team should NOT influence how you feel about your other teams, especially if those teams are in different sports. I mean, maybe I don't know what constant heartbreak is, because I have witnessed one of my teams win it all not too long ago (NCAAB: Kentucky Wildcats 2012), but in any case, different teams in different sports shouldn't affect what you think of the Blue Jays.

(You can tell I'm referring to a specific non-baseball team, but I'm not going to say who they are.)

-------------

So I pose this question to all of these so-called "fans": If you think the season is over, why are you still watching? Clearly the games don't have any more meaning for you, so why bother? And even if the season WAS over, there are fans - REAL fans - that would watch the game anyway because regardless of the result, they want to see the Blue Jays play.
