You had to figure this would happen, Neil Wagner, who just recently had Tommy John surgery has been designated for assignment by the Blue Jays. We'll need the roster spot for one of our September call ups.
Wagner was a great find for the Jays last year. A reliever that could throw high 90's. He was terrific in Buffalo, putting up a 0.76 ERA in 23.2 innings, last year. Then, with the Jays, he had a 3.79 ERA, in 36 games. Over 38 innings, he struck out 33 with 13 walks.
This season didn't go as well. In 10 games with the Jays, he had a 8.10 ERA, giving up 12 hits, 1 home run, 4 walks with 6 strikeouts in 10 innings. After being optioned out to Buffalo, they found he needed Tommy John.
Since he'll be out pretty much all of next season, dropping him from the 40-man makes sense, but I do feel sorry for the him. I hope he'll come back just as strong as he was before the injury, but he is 30 now and will miss most of his year 31 season.
Best of luck with your rehab Neil. Hope you are back with the Jays when it is all done.
UPDATE (by Minor Leaguer)
