So, hands up, how many of you figured, when Jose Reyes made that error to lead off the 7th, that we were going to have a replay of last night. But the next ball was hit at Reyes and he started a double play. And, after a single up the middle, the next batter hit one to Reyes' right and he made the play on it. Thank you baseball Gods.
Reyes started the game off right. He singled, to lead off the first, stole second, did a nice job of moving to third on a ground ball to third. That was really smart baseball, waited until the third baseman was committed to throwing to first then took off from second. And then he scored from third on Jose Bautista's 1-out ground out. Who says we can't manufacture runs?
Other than that, and a solo, rainmaking, home run by Josh Donaldson, we didn't do much against Jose Quintana. He went 8 and only allowed 4 hits, no walks with 8 strikeouts.
Thankfully, Felix Doubront was just a little better. Felix went 6.2, allowed 6 hits, 1 run, 1 walk with 6 strikeouts. He was far better than we had any right to hope. I would imagine we'll see him start again.
Our bullpen did a great job too. Bo Schultz pitched a perfect inning, split between the last out of the 7th and the first 2 outs of the 8th. With 2 outs in the 8th, Gibby brought in Aaron Loup, to face the lefty Adam LaRoche, against my expressed wishes. But, after going to an 3-0 count, he got LaRoche to ground out to first. I hate taking out a guy that is throwing as well as Schultz was, but it worked, so I won't be burning Gibby in effigy tonight. Maybe tomorrow.
Roberto Osuna came in for the 9th. He got a ground ball almost right over the bag at second, that Reyes moved a long way to get and made a good throw, just an instant too late. A sac bunt and wild pitch later, he got J.B. Shuck to pop up down the left field line, good catch by Ezequiel Carrera (Good catch, terrible, terrible, throw to the plate, thankfully Russell Martin corralled it) And then, with the tying run on 3rd Osuna got pinch hitter Conor Gillaspie to pop out to end the game. I love Osuna.
We did get some very good defense. Particularly in the 5th inning. With 1 out, Reyes made a great play, deep in the hole, and just got enough on the throw to get the runner. Then, a single later, Donaldson dove across the bag at third, got up and made a great throw to first.
Jays of the Day: Doubront (.331 WPA), Schultz (.161), Osuna (.200) and Donaldson (.117).
No one gets the Suckage number.
