Bluebird Banter: FanShots

According to a NY Post reporter, the Jays are set to sign Cuban 21-year old shortstop Adeinis Hechavarria. Hechavarria was "unblocked" (that is, allowed to sign in the U.S.) this offseason. Apparently the Yankees were in big time on Hechavarria, but he was wary of being blocked at shortstop by the inevitable Derek Jeter extension. Hechavarria projects as an offensively-capable shortstop, but it's hard to pin it down any more than that at this point.

The other thing is that Hechavarria has already "aged" two years this offseason, since it was originally reported that he was 19.

More on this as we know more. Nothing is for sure yet.

Update: Now we're hearing the deal is for 4 years and $10 million

It's one thing to suggest that the Indians will volunteer to join the American League East and lose more games, and that the Orioles will volunteer to join the American League Central and lose the boffo box office that comes with playing all those games against the Yankees and Red Sox.

It's another thing entirely to suggest that those teams will volunteer to do those things at the same time. And that they'll volunteer to do those things well before the season in question (because Major League Baseball can't wait, for example, until after the 2010 season to draw up the divisions and the schedules for 2011).

I'm sure you all where wondering about Kevin Millar.

His agent says he had hip surgery and will need four months to recover.
