Toronto Blue Jays Rumors
Man I wish there was something to write about......
Something better than writing about a twitter rumor started by someone claiming to a player's wife's cousin's husband's barber.
Beyond that, there isn't much for rumors. But then none of the rumors we've heard, this off-season, turned out to be true. What is there?
Jon Heyman tells us that the Jays were asking about Anthony Rizzo, which really doesn't need to be said, Alex inquires about everybody. As Ken Rosenthal says:
Yes, the Blue Jays inquired about the availability of Mariners ace Felix Hernandez, but that isn't really news. Jays general manager Alex Anthopoulos routinely asks about the best players on every team. He almost always is told no.
"Alex is always looking for everything," a rival GM told me earlier this off-season. "He is the only GM in the league with a 60-man roster - and I say that as a compliment. You can't pin him down. He has interest in every one of your players."
He tells us Alex has asked about Felix Hernandez, Michael Pineda, Gavin Floyd and "every other pitcher imaginable. Then, as he says, and we know, that most of his moves happen without hearing any rumor before hand.
I'm sure there will be news again, someday, but it can't come quick enough. Come on Alex, we are bored.
Jays Offer Kyle Drabek for Matt Garza?
MLB Daily Dish has a story that the Jay have offered Kyle Drabek for Matt Garza (sorry my tablet wouldn't let me link to the story). I do hate the idea of trading Drabek after a bad year, I'd like to think we trust our evaluations of a player enough to ride out a poor season. If we really thought he was good, why would we let a bad year change our minds. On the other hand Garza had a good year in 2011 and has been good his whole career. Garza is 28, Drabek 24.
So 2 questions:
Would you do this trade if you were Alex?
Would you do it if you were the Cubs?
New York Post Thinks Blue Jays Will Get Yu Darvish
There is a story in the New York Post saying the Jays put in the high bid. This would mean something to me if I thought the Post knew anything about it. They don't. No one outside the commissioner's office and the Fighters know anything. But let's look at the story.
Having made a posting bid above $40 million and possibly close to $50 million, the Blue Jays are the favorites to land the negotiating rights to Yu Darvish.
How do they know this? Because some people are guessing the Jays bid that much. They don't know.
There is a belief the Cubs also made a large bid on the right-handed pitcher but a number hasn't been attached to their bid.
There isn't a number attached to their bid? That seems to be a bit of a mistake, you would think if you were making a bid, you'd want to attach a number to it. Without a number, it really wouldn't be a bid. Oh, they mean that they don't know what the Cubs bid was? Well, makes it much the same as the Jays' bid.
According to several sources with knowledge of the situation, the Blue Jays made the monster bid on orders from owner Rogers Communications.
I'd love to know who the "sources with knowledge" are. Anyone really think that Rogers would try to tell Anthopoulos and Beeston how to run the team? I mean, I can see it the other way around, Alex and Paul deciding that Darvish could be an important part of the team and then making the case to Rogers, but the other way around? Nah.
Can you see it? Some Rogers executive saying "hey, my kid told me that this Yu guy is pretty good. Go offer him a pile of money. If you need a sweetener, give him unlimited free texting."
Though the baseball fraternity wasn't shocked the Yankees made a bid, heads shook over the rumored size of the Blue Jays' bid.
I would think the "baseball fraternity" would be shaking their heads at whoever tried to tell them the they knew how much the Blue Jays bid.
"He has better stuff than (Hideki) Irabu and (Daisuke) Matsuzaka,'' a talent evaluator from a team that didn't bid said of Darvish.
DiceK won 33 games in his first two seasons with the Red Sox, there was nothing wrong with his 'stuff'. Injuries and a lack of conditioning was a problem, not his 'stuff'. If Yu's is better then I'd be happy if the Jays got him.
Anyway, take the Post's story for what it's worth, they don't know any more than we do, which isn't all that much.

Did the Jays Win the Bidding for Yu Darvish?
There are tons of rumors out there, but a lot of them are suggesting the Jays won the bidding, but no one knows anything yet. We might know sometime tonight or tomorrow morning.
Teams that are rumored not to have bid on Yu: Marlins, A's, Mets, Rays, Angels, Twins and Red Sox. Yankees put in a 'modest bid'.
I've got no inside information, but we'll put up a thread and we can share any good rumors in the thread. We'll update when we know more.
I'm hopeful, but we shall see.
Bluebird Bantering: Rumor of the Day
Today's rumor comes from Scott Miller, of CBSSports.com, who tells us the Jays are one of 5 teams that is 'in on' Carlos Beltran, because, as you all know, you can never have too many outfielders. I don't see it at all. Beltran is a good player and he has that 'big bat' that Alex has been talking about, but he is 34 (35 in April) and doesn't really fit with the 'eye on the future' style that Alex has been employing since taking the GM job.
But then, he gets on base, his OBP the last three seasons: .415, .341 and .385. It wouldn't be a bad thing to have a guy that gets on like that batting in front of Jose Bautista. Let him bat 3rd and move Jose to cleanup. It would be that 'win now' move that some Jay fans have been pushing Alex to do. He could DH or play LF, letting the team platoon Lind and Encarnacion at first base. Or it might give Alex enough depth in the outfield to make some trades.
I still don't see it happening.
Other stuff:
- John Axford and Joey Votto get to share the Tip O'Neill award for top Canadian baseball player.
- Bids for the right to negotiate with Yu Darvish have to be submitted by 5:00 Eastern time today. That doesn't mean we'll know who submitted the winning bid today. We might not know who won for another 4 days.
- Jeff Sullivan, at SB Baseball Nation, asks where is Prince Fielder going to go? The Jays:
Maybe! The Blue Jays have been considered a Fielder possibility from the get-go, although they are extremely reluctant to give long-term contracts.
But I like his Orioles answer better:
Maybe! The Orioles are always a maybe, until they are a no.
- Grant Brisbee, also from Baseball Nation, shares '10 Surprising Facts' from Scott Boras' binder on Prince Fielder.
Jays 'in on' Gio Gonzalez
Very little for rumors today but there was this tweet from Susan Slusser:
#BlueJays in on Gonzalez, two sources tell me.
I'm not sure I'd really want him, unless he was cheap to get. Pitches in a great pitcher's park in the AL West. His career ERA at home is 3.56 but on the road it is 4.32. But then he is only 25 and controllable for a few years. And pitched 200 innings each of the past two. And course, since we've heard about it, odds are Alex won't do it.
What do you think?
Winter Meeting Day Two Open Thread
Not too much for rumors so far today.
Bob Elliot thinks the Jays have won the posting for Hiroyuki Nakajima. He would be an interesting choice to play second base. Maybe it is a test balloon for the Yu Darvish posting, trying out the system.
There are still rumors that we are in on Prince Fielder, I don't believe them but it is a nice little fantasy.
Beyond that? There are rumors we are after any and all available closers, but nothing specific on any one reliever.
I think it is going to be a long week, with us waiting for any real news. Anyway, use the thread to discus any rumors that interest you.
More Rumors: Greg Holland
The Jays might be interested in Greg Holland from the Royals, He had a terrific season:
