Yankees 3 Jays 1
The good? David Purcey did very well, pitching 6 innings, allowing just 2 hits, 1 run, 5 walks while striking out 2. He also picked off a runner at first. The walks are a concern but then when you give up only 2 hits a few walks are ok. Scott Downs pitched a great inning, 3 up, 3 down, 1 strikeout.
Not so good? Jason Frasor and BJ Ryan each gave up a run in an inning of work each. Frasor gave up three hits. Ryan gave up 2 but they were a triple and a double both off the wall. MLB.com has a story where Cito suggests Ryan will share closer duty with Downs. I'm kind of wondering if Ryan will stay behind in extended spring training for a bit.
Offensively we didn't do much, scored just the one run. I have been thinking that our offense should be better this year but they haven't been showing it yet. Lind went 2 for 3. Scutaro, McDonald, Hill, Rolen, and Barrett each had a hit. Scutaro, Lind and Mac had doubles, the rest were singles. At first they thought Scutaro had hit a game tying double but apparently the ball got stuck in the wall and was ruled a ground rule double. Ofers went to Rios, Millar (with 2 strikeouts), Overbay (with 3 strikeouts) and Snider.
Jerry and Alan were talking about Overbay having a different batting stance, this year, more closed. I hope if that's true he gets on to it soon. And, of course, I have to complain about Millar. The guy is hitting a big .189 and he can't play anything but first base and poorly at that. I truly don't see the upside in having him. Oh well, I guess time will tell, but he may be the Shannon Stewart award winner.
The Jays play the Phillies tomorrow night, 7:05 Eastern start and Brad Mills goes for the Jays. Mills and Scott Richmond are still fighting it out for the last spot in the starting rotation.
