Hope everyone is enjoying their Saturday. Labor Day weekend!
Yesterday was incredible. Doc was masterful. Today, Brett Cecil pitches for the Jays, making what is likely to be his second-to-last start of the season before being shut down. Andy Pettitte, who has really turned it on in the second half, pitches for the Yankees.
And don't bother asking, yes, Kevin Millar is starting and, yes, Kevin Millar is batting cleanup. And, your corner outfielders: Jose Bautista and John McDonald. Yes, that John McDonald. Also, Edwin Encarnacion is back. Seriously, look at that lineup.
David Purcey made his last start of the season for AAA Las Vegas yesterday, and was ok. He went 5 1/3 innings, struck out 4, and gave up two runs, but walked three and needed to come out as he was over 100 pitches (105, 64 of which were strikes). I'd still rather see him making major-league starts in the last few weeks of the season than Brian Tallet. Fabio Castro makes his last start for Vegas today and could also be a callup candidate. Zach Stewart pitched 2 superb innings in relief - needing just 24 pitches to strike out 4 and allow but one baserunner. Wouldn't mind seeing him either. On the other side of the ball, J.P. Arencibia cranked another 2 home runs - giving him 21 on the season. He also walked.
Thanks to Final Fantasy (the band, not the video game) for today's title - one of my favourite Toronto songs, though it sounds a little too much like a Sufjan Stevens song to me. Metric has another I really like, Parkdale, about the neighbourhood, and of course there's Gordon Lightfoot's "On Yonge Street," which still sounds quite lovely.
