The game was lost on two pitches. Shaun Marcum gave up a three run homer in the first to Jose Guillen and Scott Downs gave up a solo homer to to Alex Gordon in the 9th.
Other than the first, Marcum pitched a great game, course the first mattered. I thought he was getting a little squeezed at the plate in the first. A couple of calls his way and it is a different inning. But it often takes umpires an inning to get the zone and you have to work with it. After the first the zone was pretty good. Marcum gave up 3 hits and 3 runs in the first, then only 3 more hits in his other 6 innings of work. He finished with 6 K, 9 ground outs, 4 fly outs.
Janssen came in and pitched 1.2 good innings,1 hit, 1 K and 4 ground outs. Mac made one of those amazing plays to on a bunt single attempt to help out Janssen, ran a mile to get to a ball not much more than 10 feet from first and make a glove hand flip to get the batter, just in time. Downs got 3 outs (1 to end the 9th) then gave up the homer to Gordon. Not a cheapie, straight out over CF.
Offensively we didn't do much. Just 4 hits and 1 walk in 10 innings. Zack Grienke pitched 7 innings and looked like the Cy Yound award winner, but then we've made lots of guys look good. Fred Lewis, Adam Lind, Jose Molina and Alex Gonzalez had our hits, Gonzalez' a 2 run homer. That's 5 for Alex, I might have to up my guess of 15 homers for him. He also took his 2nd walk of the season. Lewis singled to drive in pinch runner McCoy to tie the game in the 8th.
Jays of the Day are Lewis (.267 WPA), Janssen (.130). Gonzalez number was close (.092) and he made a couple of nice plays so lets add him. Suckage Jays are Downs (-.226), Snider (-.174), Overbay (-.157), Lind (-.137), Bautista (-.126) and McDonald (-.119).
Off day tomorrow and then the Jays have 3 in Tampa Bay.
