Blue Jay Pitchers in July

The Jays had a pretty nice July, we went 15-11, our best record for any month so far this year (we had a pretty good month at BBB too, we had over 200,000 visits in the month for the first time).

Our pitchers had a 4.46 ERA on the month, a little better than in June. Our starters were 11-7 with a 4.36 ERA, an improvement of half a run from June. Our relievers were 4-4 with a 4.68 with 4 saves.

Ricky Romero: 1-2, 4.31 in 5 starts. He pitched 31.1 innings, allowing 30 hits, 17 walks and 30 strikeouts. The Jays were 2-3 in his starts. It wasn't a good month for Ricky, but he looked much better in his last start, so I'm hoping he's turning things around.

Brandon Morrow:  4-1, 4.62 in 6 starts. 37 innings, 34 hits, 13 walks and 42 strikeouts. The Jays were 5-1 in his starts. Can't say too much bad about what he did in July.

Brett Cecil: 3-1, 2.19 in 5 starts. 37 innings, 33 hits, 9 walks, 27 strikeouts. Jays were 4-1 in his starts. Averaging over 7 innings a start is pretty good. So happy to see him back.

Carlos Villanueva: 1-1, 4.60 in 5 starts. 29.1 innings, 35 hits, 9 walks and 18 strikeouts. The Jays were 1-4 in his starts. His worst month of the season, and really he didn't pitch all that bad.

Jo-Jo Reyes: 2-1, 8.02 in 4 starts. 21.1 innings, 34 hits, 7 walks, 5 strikeouts. Amazingly the Jays were 3-1 in his starts, but then they scored 36 runs in his 4 starts. His strikeouts per 9 innings by month: April 7.4, May 5.3, June 5.8 and July 2.1. I doubt any pitcher could be successful only getting 2 strikeouts a game. I wonder if he will catch on with anyone.

Frank Francisco: 0-1, 1 save, 5.59. 11 games, 9.2 innings, 11 hits, 2 walks, 11 strikeouts. 1 blown save. He gave up runs in 3 of the 11 appearances. As much as he hasn't been good, he hasn't given up a run in his last 5 times out and only 1 run in his last 8 games. ERA by month starting with April: 1.69, 8.68, 1.08, 5.59. Personally, I'd put him back in the closer role and leave him there.

Shawn Camp: 0-0, 1 save, 9.64. 10 games, 9.1 innings 17 hits, 2 walks and 2 strikeouts. Second very bad month in a row for Shawn. He gave up 3 or more runs in 3 of his 10 games.

Jon Rauch: 2-0, 2 saves, 4.26. 12 games, 11 innings, 14 hits, 3 walks, 8 strikeouts. 2 blown saves. He gave up 2 home runs in July, bringing him to 8 in 44.1 innings this year. Too many. Never gave up more than 1 run in a game, but did that 5 times.

Jason Frasor: 0-0, 4.66. 9 games, 9.2 innings, 14 hits, 3 walks, 10 k. 1 blown save. 2 of the appearances Gave up runs in 3 of his games, 3 runs in one of them, gave up hits in all but one of his games. Bye Jason.

Marc Rzepczynski: 0-1, 1.35. 6 games, 6.2 innings, 2 hits, 3 walks, 5 k. He wasn't used all that much, I wonder if there was a reason for that. Bye Scrabble.

Octavio Dotel: 0-1, 2.25. 10 games, 8 innings, 3 hits, 0 walks, 5 k. Only gave up runs in 1 of his games. Bye Octavio.

Luis Perez: 0-2, 3.72. 8 games, 9.2 innings, 13 hits, 2 walks, 8 k. 2 blown saves. He gave up 2 home runs in July and 5 on the season in 35.1 innings. He gave up runs in 4 games.

Casey Janssen: 1-0, 2.25. 5 games, 4 innings, 7 hits, 1 walk, 3 k. 1 blown save. Only gave up the 1 run on the home run and that was enough to get him the blown save, but the we win the game anyway.

I'm going to ignore the guys that just got into 1 or 2 games. Brad Mills had a nice start though.
