Would You Do It: J.P. Arencibia and Anthony Gose For R.A. Dickey?

I was listening to MLB Radio this morning and the folks on it (sorry, I don't know their names, all the guys on that station seem generic too me) were trying to sell us on the Blue Jays trading for R.A. Dickey, giving the Mets J.P. Arencibia and Anthony Gose in return.

Dickey is 38, but then 38 is in the prime for a knuckleballer. Phil Niekro pitched until he was 48, Joe Niekro till 43, Tim Wakefield till 44, Wilbur Wood, Hoyt Wilhelm 49, so Dickey, likely, has a few seasons left in him. He won 20 games and the Cy Young last year, but he isn't a one year wonder. Over the past 3 seasons he has an ERA of 2.95 with a 39-28 record pitching for a lousy Mets' team. He also has written a great autobiography, and, since Hayhurst isn't on the team anymore, we have an open slot for an author.

On the Jays' side, we do have 4 catchers on the 40-man, and the Mets badly need a catcher. Arencibia would give them someone that they could count on for the next several years. Maybe not an All-Star, but much better than what they have at present.

John Buck could handle the starting catcher job, until Travis d'Arnaud is ready for prime time. Eli Whiteside could be a major league backup catcher, at least the same way Jeff Mathis was. The idea of watching Buck try to catch a knuckleball amuses me already, but the Jays could make Whiteside Dickey's personal catcher.

I do have worries that trading JP would change the catching position from an area of depth to potentially a weakness, if Travis wasn't able to come back from his injuries of last season, but then there are risks in any trade.

Trading Gose would be tough on me, after the moment of being happy that the Jays got Michael Taylor, then flipping him for Brett Wallace, who was the first baseman of the future for a few moments, I've gotten used to thinking Gose will be our center fielder for years to come. I don't think he'll ever hit great, but with his speed and defense, he doesn't have to win a batting title to be great. I'm sure there would be improvement on last year's .223/.303/.319.

If Gose was traded, the next center fielder of the future would be someone down in A-Ball, so Rasmus would have to be the guy for at least 2 or 3 years. Then again, I have no doubt that Alex could trade for whatever we needed.

Alex has just said that no trades are eminent and that he hasn't spent more than 3 or 4 minutes on the phone with anyone this week. Then, with Alex, he could plan a 4 team, 30 player trade in 3 or 4 minutes.
