In a late night tweet, Sportsnet's Barry Davis announces that the Toronto Blue Jays have made four roster moves following a marathon 15-inning 4-5 loss to the Oakland Athletics.

Super prospect Adeiny Hechavarria, a 23 year old shortstop from Santiago de Cuba, has been called up to the big leagues. Hechavarria signed a 4-year, $10 million contract with the Jays in 2010 and has been on the 40-man roster ever since. In 101 games for the Las Vegas 51s this season, Hechavarria batted .311/.359/.424 with 6 homers, 20 doubles, and 6 triples. He also had 35 walks against 86 strikeouts.

He played mostly at shortstop, but had spent 8 game at second base, but he will be starting at third base in Saturday's game in Oakland. Hechavarria has never played third base in his professional baseball career (at least outside of Cuba). The Blue Jays return home next Friday. I hope that Hechavarria has sorted out his visa problems and that he would be allowed to enter Canada (and then return to the United States).

Joining Hechavarria on the flight from Albuquerque is Jesse Chavez, 28. He had appeared in 8 games (2 starts) with the Blue Jays this year. Chavez had spent the majority of the season as a starter in Las Vegas, recording a 3.72 ERA, 1.125 WHIP, 71 strikeouts and 17 walks in 77 innings. He is likely going to be slotted in the bullpen to help the tired arms down there.

Brett Cecil, the starter of last night's game against the Athletics, has been optioned to Las Vegas. Cecil recorded 5 innings, but gave up 4 earned runs on 9 hits (2 homers), while recording 1 strike out and 1 walk. He was on the hook for the loss before Jeff Mathis' late-inning heroics tied the game. Cecil began the season down at AA New Hampshire and had a single start in Las Vegas before his eventual recall. Cecil has not been horrible in his stint as a starter with the big club, but did not impress anyone with his performances. We may have seen the last of him in a starter in the Major Leagues. I hope that the Jays will look to transform him into a useful bullpen piece. He has been replaced in the rotation by J.A. Happ, who will start in Thursday's game against the Tampa Bay Rays.

Drew Carpenter had been rumoured to be in line to be designated for assignment since July 20, but Jason Frasor's injury gave Carpenter two more weeks with the big club.
