This R.A. Dickey start was a much better one than the last R.A. Dickey start. His knuckle ball had much more movement than the last time and the results showed. He pitched 6 1/3 innings with five hits, one earned run, two BB and four Ks thus becoming the first Jays starter this season to get into the 7th (sigh.)
Unfortunately, Royals Starter James Shields threw almost as well as he pitched a complete game giving up two (TWO!) hits, three runs with three BBs and six Ks. Fortunately for Toronto, both Jays hits were for extra bases.
The first Jays hit was by Macier Izturis who doubled to lead off the 3rd inning. New Jays hero, Muneori Kawasaki's first at bat was with Macier on third and one out. He managed to make some contact and drive the ball deep enough to score Maicer Izturis for the first run of the game. The play at the plate was closer than it looked as Macier just beat the tag from Buck Martinez ManCrush Salvador Perez.
Both teams traded zeros till the 6th inning. Kawasaki drew a rare BB from Shields and then found himself at 3B with two out and Jose Bautista at the plate. Big Game James hung a breaking ball inside and Jedi crushed it down the left field line just fair for a two run home run and the last Jays hit of the night. Edwin Encarnation struck out looking on a front door cutter for the last out of the 6th.
John Gibson pulled R. A. after Jarrod Dyson doubled off his 100th pitch of the night. He went to Darren Oliver who gave up an RBI hit to Christ Getz. The old man struck out Alex Gordon and induced a ground out from Alcides Escobar to end the 7th.
In the bottom of the 8th, Sergio Santos walked the leadoff hitter and got the next two batters out. Gibby pulled a page from Joe Girardi's binder and went to Brett Cecil who faced Mike Moustakas. Brett struck out Moose on four pitches.
Casey Janssen came on to pitch the 9th and got two quick outs. Chris Getz gotz his third hit of the night with two out after Casey threw every pitch he had at him. Getz gotz 2B due to defensive indifference then Alex Gordon singled up the middle to drive him in. The non-controversial Escobar (Alcides) ended the game with a fly out to right.
Jays of the Day: R.A. (.334), Jose Bautista (.179) and an honorary one to Kawasaki (.059). There were no Suckage Jays tonight.
