Blue Jays pitchers in July

Brad White

We are into August so let's take a look at how our pitchers did in the month of July. In August we went 10-16, almost exactly as bad as our April, 10-17, with a team ERA of 4.95. The worst mark of the season, so far. Our starters had an ERA of 5.34, their second worst month to May's 5.74. Our relievers had their worst monthly ERA a 4.22.

  • R.A. Dickey: 4.50 ERA in 6 starts, 38 innings, 6.3 innings per start. He was 1-3, gave up a batting line of .250/.313/.474, with 7 home runs allowed.10 walks, 19 strikeouts. He gave up at least 2 runs in each of his starts, though the 2 were unearned in his last start in Oakland, where our fielders could catch a popup if their life depended on it. He did go at least 6 innings in each of his starts.
  • Mark Buehrle: 2.75 ERA in 5 starts, 36 innings, 7.2 innings a starts. He was 3-2 and gave up a batting line of .235/.266/.324. 5 walks, 25 strikeouts. Our best pitcher of the month, really our best pitcher this season, even with the awful start to the season. He had one bad start in July, 6 innings 8 earned, 3 home runs allowed against the Orioles.
  • Josh Johnson: 7.71 ERA in 5 starts, 25.2 innings, just over 5 innings a start. He was 0-5, gave up a batting line up .282/.342/.527 with 8 home runs allowed. the 8 walks and 28 strikeouts look good, nothing else does. His best start was a 7 inning, 3 hit, 2 earned start against the Indians July 9. J.P. suggested that he is battling through a sore knee, but if he is, he really should go on the DL, a 7.71 ERA isn't helping anyone.
  • Esmil Rogers: 7.07 ERA in 5 starts, 28 innings, 5.6 per starts. He was 0-2, giving up a .333/.380/.528. 9 walks, 22 strikeouts. He's this year's Carlos Villanueva, looked great in his first few starts, but doesn't any more. Maybe his arm wasn't ready for this many innings or maybe he's not that good. He had a couple of good starts, went 6 allowing just 4 hits and 1 run against the Indians and went 7, allowing 10 hits but just 2 earned against the Dodgers.
  • Casey Janssen: 3.52 ERA in 9 games. 2-0, with 1 save (we didn't get him many save opportunities) 1 hold, 1 blown save. Batters hit .200/.333/.267 against him. 5 walks, 10 strikeouts.
  • Aaron Loup: 2.08 ERA in 11 games. 1-0, batters hit .239/.294/.326 against him. 2 walks, 10 strikeouts. He's been very consistent.
  • Brett Cecil: 7.84 ERA in 11 games. 1-1, 1 save, 1 blown save, 1 hold. Batters hit .303/.426/.465 against him. 9 walks, 11 strikeouts. Not good at all.
  • Steve Delabar: 5.59 ERA in 11 games. 0-0, 1 save, 1 hold. Batters hit .278/.308/.444 against him. 2 walks, 18 strikeouts. Really it was one bad appearance that cost him, 4 earned in 1 inning against the Dodgers.
  • Darren Oliver: 4.09 ERA in 10 games. 0-1, 1 blown save. Batters hit .205/.279/.436 against him. 2 walks, 11 strikeouts. Again, 1 bad showing cost him, 4 earned, 2 home runs, against the Dodgers.
  • Juan Perez: 5.40 ERA in 7 games. 0-1. Batters hit .189/.318/.405. 6 walks, 11 strikeouts. Again, 1 bad outing, 5 earned against, you guessed it, the Dodgers.
  • Dustin McGowan: 1.69 ERA in 10 games. 3 holds. Batters hit .175/.298/.225 against him. and he's on the DL again.
  • Neil Wagner: 6.35 ERA in 6 games. 1-1. Batters hit .375/.385/.583 against him. 1 walk, 8 strikeouts. He's back. Hopefully he'll be than he was in July.
