Blue Jays 6 Rays 7: I guess it is fitting we finish with a loss

Brad White

Rays 7 Blue Jays 6

That wasn't the ending to the 2013 season that Todd Redmond would have liked. He only managed to get 2 outs, giving up 4 hits and 1 walk. He was charged with 5 earned, though 2 of them scored on the double that Neil Wagner gave up after he came in. Neil was lucky that Yunel Escobar ran into an out at 2nd after his single.

Neil gave up a run scoring single, after the double, before getting out of the first and we were down 6-0. After that the bullpen did it's usual good job. Luiz Perez game up a run in the 4th, but that was it for the Rays scoring:

  • Jeremy Jeffress pitched 2 particularly nice, scoreless innings, getting 2 strikeouts, and lots of very soft contact.
  • Darren Oliver pitched his last inning of baseball, perfect one, getting 2 strikeouts on the way. He got a nice ovation. I wish we could have gotten him a better season to go out on, but that's life.
  • Steve Delabar and Sergio Santos pitched a perfect 8th and 9th respectively.

Our offense did make it interesting.

We scored 3 in the 6th, Brett Lawrie and Moises Sierra had back-to-back singles, setting up a Mark DeRosa 2-run double. A Ryan Langerhans single later, J.P. Arencibia hit a sac fly, giving him 55 RBI on the season. He also finishes with a 194 batting average and 148 strikeouts, the 6th highest total in Blue Jay history.

One more scored in the 7th, Jose Reyes singled, Anthony Gose walked and Brett Lawrie doubled to bring home Reyes. After a Moises Sierra walk, Rays manager Joe Maddon got himself ejected and got endless credit for inspiring the inning ending double play off Adam Lind's bat, with the ejection, from our friends Buck and Pat.

2 more Runs in the 8th, made it a 1-run game. Ryan Langerhans walked, Kevin Pillar singled and Reyes and Gose followed with back-to-back RBI singles. Unfortunately, after a Lawrie walk, Sierra struck out to end the inning.

Adam Lind started the 9th with a single, but even with Esmil Rogers pinch running for him, we couldn't get the tying run in.

We had 12 hits and 7 walks, we should have scored more. Reyes, Gose, Lawrie and DeRosa had 2 hits each. JP and Ryan Goins were the only starters to go 0 for.

Jays of the last Day of the season are Lawrie (.186 WPA), Gose (.144) and Reyes (.109).

Suckage goes to Redmond (-.256), Wagner (-.126), Goins (-.166, but a couple of nice plays in the field), Sierra (-.149),  and Thole (-.115).

Just because the season is over, doesn't mean we are turning out the lights here, we'll have GameThreads for all the playoff games. And we'll be looking back at the season and looking forward to next year, as well as discussing all the news the Jays make (please let there be news, maybe a new catcher?) during the off-season.

We had a very nice GameThread to finish off the season. 38 of us put up 722 comments. Damaso's Burnt Shirt put up a great late game rally to lead the way.

Since it is the last game, I'll put up the entire table for today. Thank everyone that participated in our GameThreads this year, you made a lousy season a lot more enjoyable.

And thanks to Carm for putting up each and every GameThread this season. Doing work that is above and beyond her pay scale. Thank you.
