Jon Heyman gives us our rumor du jour:
The Blue Jays have joined at least the Mariners and incumbent Tigers in the derby for top free-agent hitter Victor Martinez, who posted an MVP type season at the right time.
I don't really understand why the Jays would trade Adam Lind away, to open up their DH spot and let them use it to rest their regulars, and then look to sign Victor Martinez to fill up the DH role again. But Martinez is a very good batter. He hit .335/.409/.565 last year with 32 home runs and 103 RBI. He'd fit in very nicely with Jose Bautista and Edwin Encarnacion. If he can hit 32 home runs in that huge park in Detroit, how many could he hit with Rogers as a home park?
John Gibbons mentioned his name in an interview last week.
I think it is a long shot, but then I think all of the free agents the Jays have been linked to are long shots, sometimes a long shot comes through.
Martinez will be 36 two days before Christmas, so there shouldn't be the worry of him wanting more than the Jays 5-year contract limit.. Heyman says he is looking for a 4-year deal.
Since Buck and Pat are going to drool over him anyway, it would be nice to have him in a Jays uniform.
