Awful Announcing ranks Blue Jays TV announcers 20th in MLB

Debby Wong-USA TODAY Sports

Awful Announcing has ranked the MLB local TV announcers and our team of Buck Martinez and Pat Tabler are #20 out of 30.

Here is what they Awful Announcing had to say:

Analysis: No team received more C votes than the Blue Jays. Hooray for being supremely average! Most readers feel that Martinez is better in the analyst role as opposed to the play by play role, something Toronto should consider in the future.

'Supremely average' sounds about right to me.

Not surprisingly, at the bottom of the list is Hawk Harrelson and the rest of the White Sox TV team.

At the top of the charts are the San Francisco Giants. Number two is Vin Scully.

I know I complain about Buck and Pat too much. They really aren't speaking to me and you, they are speaking to the more casual fan. I think it is fair to say that I'd like Buck much better in the analyst role. I thought he was very good with Dan Shulman and if we could get someone like him again, I'd be happy with Buck sliding over a seat. Pat, on the other hand, shouldn't be on. It doesn't seem like he does any prep work for the game. He falls back on his favorite lines (big and strong) and, of course, the constant praising of whatever team we are playing.

I think they are at their best when they are talking about their own experiences as players, which is the strength of having former players in the booth. I think having someone that someone that's a trained broadcaster in the booth would help. Buck and Pat seem like likable enough people, I'm sure they would be good to have a beer with, nice people to talk to, but not folks that I want to listen to for 3 hours a night, 162 days a year. There are many times when I need to turn off the sound. I wish we had a 'just game noise' option on the broadcasts. I like to hear the game sounds.

What do you think of the rankings? I don't hear enough of the other teams to be able to compare Buck and Pat to all the broadcast teams. I know I didn't enjoy the couple of spring games where we have the Phillies feed. I'm not a fan of Jerry Remy  on the Red Sox games. I think Kenny Singleton does a good job for the Yankees and, of course, Vin Scully just sounds like baseball to me.

What would you do to improve the Jays' broadcasts?
