That was just what we needed, a great start from Drew Hutchison and a great game from Jose Bautista.
Bautista hit a 2 run homer in the second inning, extending our lead to 4-1 and then he doubled in a run in the 6th, add a single, in between and you have a really nice game from our best hitter, who has been going through a cold spell.
Hutchison gave us 8.2 great innings. The only flaw, in his first 8 innings, was a home run given up to Chris Davis in the 2nd inning. That was the only hit and only base runner he allowed, until 2 outs in the 9th when he gave up a walk and Gibby pulled him. He was at 115 pitches, so I'm with Gibby, it was time to take him out, but he was so close to the complete game. He struck out 8 and looked in control all the way. He had 8 ground outs, and 7 fly outs, but not many deep flies. It was just a terrific start. Janssen got the last out.
And at home, maybe we can stop talking about how he can't pitch at home.
Melky Cabrera also had a very good night with the bat, getting 3 hits, including a double.
We had 12 hits in all. Munenori Kawasaki had 2. The only ones not to get a hit were Jose Reyes (0 for 5, including a badly timed double play in the bottom of the 8th) and Ryan Goins (but he had two sac bunts, one that reliever T.J. McFarland made an error on, allowing Goins to reach.
Dioner Navarro and Danny Valencia drove our 2 runs in the first inning. We could have put the game away that first inning, we had the bases loaded and Munenori up. Muni had a long at bat, marred by one terrible strike call on a pitch well off the plate, before striking out on a nice breaking pitch.
Unlike last night, we showed some good defense, when it was needed, but Hutch was so good, we didn't need many great plays behind him.
Jays of the Day are Hutch (.259 WPA) and Bautista (.180). I'm also giving one to Cabrera. No suckage Jays.
Great job Jays, let's get them again tomorrow.
We had a very nice GameThread, 1002 comments (and counting), Pikachu led the way to victory, great job young man.
